pixie_··on Bitcoin is a Startup
You went from the 'bitcoin has no intrinsic value fallacy' right to the 'bitcoin is not a currency fallacy' - seriously read the Bitcoin FAQ or something. All your points have been discussed to death for the last 4 years. You think after 4 years, hundreds of startups, and millions of dollars invested in Bitcoin that you are the only one who 'realizes' Bitcoin is a scam? Wake up, bitcoin is legit now. It's been vetted by larger forces than your 'blog.'
pixie_··on Bitcoin is a Startup
You think it's a ponzi scheme because you think early adopters have all the bitcoins. I would argue Bitcoins are much more spread out than you realize. Mining pools started in 2010 - that's when a large number of people work together to mine coins - each person only earns a fraction of a coin as a result. In 2010 when this started there were only 2 million coins - and not just in one guys wallet, but many - and many many people lost their wallets in the old days as well. Today there are almost 12 million coins - and I assure you those 10 million new coins are even more evenly distributed.

I would argue Bitcoin has more intrinsic value than gold - it is easier to move, faster to move, more secure in its transit, harder to counterfit, and impossible to create more (than is already planned.)

It's intrinsic value comes from these very properties - similar to how gold's intrinsic value is that it's shiny, has been around for 2000 years, makes great jewelry, and some other things as well.

In this century though if you're looking for a digital, better kind of gold then Bitcoin is it - hands down.

pixie_··on Average Income per Programming Language
I agree flash/flex is a great platform to develop on. From the language, to the IDE, to the API. It's like a strongly typed javascript with XAML done right. You can create a great looking app that shares the same code base between the web, iPhone and Android.
pixie_··on Forced Exposure
I think she just wants to take a break (maybe even subconsciously) and this is the excuse she can use to do it.
pixie_··on Notch's Minecraft follow-up 0x10c officially dead
I've been there.. you work your ass off on a project and even if it's successful you just want to move onto something fresh.. In retrospect you wish you spent more time developing your original project.
pixie_··on Exo: Protein Bars made from Cricket Flour
Not one picture of a cricket anywhere. Good idea.
pixie_··on Hyperloop Update: Elon Musk Will Start Developing It Himself
I believe Musk is perfectly capable - just as Dean Kamen is a capable, successful inventor.
pixie_··on Introduction to Golang
Interesting thanks. Of course then I was wondering what this recover() stuff was and I found an explanation here - http://blog.golang.org/defer-panic-and-recover cool stuff.
pixie_··on Introduction to Golang
Is there any way to 'catch' a divide by zero panic in go?
pixie_··on Introduction to Golang
Random question - but what happens when you divide by zero in go?
pixie_··on Grasshopper 100m Lateral Divert Test
I feel like a lot of good technology was lost with the cancellation of the X-33/VentureStar. They were very close, and a few test failures caused the entire program to be shut down. It's really a shame.
pixie_··on Why Are Swimsuits So Expensive?
Can someone please create a sewing machine / 3d printer hybrid?
pixie_··on Hyperloop Update: Elon Musk Will Start Developing It Himself
No prototype - nothing even remotely close to a prototype. At least rockets and electric cars had some basis in reality before Elon started working on them.
pixie_··on Hyperloop Update: Elon Musk Will Start Developing It Himself
This is Elon's Segway - unproven, hyped up technology. This always happens with successful people/companies - they feel like they can do anything and can't fail - throwing rationality into the wind. I love Elon, but this is not worth his time at the moment.
pixie_··on Hyperloop Update: Elon Musk Will Start Developing It Himself
Maybe like a new 'physical internet' where it really is a series of tubes.
pixie_··on Babylon.js: JS framework for building 3D games with HTML5 and WebGL
Uhg, the point is these are all multi-billion dollar businesses that use open source in one way or another. The problem is the open source (hacker news) community pretty much auto-ignores/dislikes anything connected with Microsoft. It's juvenile.
pixie_··on Babylon.js: JS framework for building 3D games with HTML5 and WebGL
Mono is pretty much ostracized from the open source community along with many open source C# projects. Remember the whole ordeal about including Mono in Ubuntu?
pixie_··on Why Tipping Should (And May) Be Made Illegal
I got the feeling my server was offended when I didn't order wine or a dessert last friday when I went out to a nice restaurant. F- tipping, it makes both sides of the table into jerks.
pixie_··on Babylon.js: JS framework for building 3D games with HTML5 and WebGL
And you swallow it down because they do it all under the banner of 'open source.'
pixie_··on What makes Lua tick?
I don't purposefully release software with bugs. Bugs are inevitable no matter how good of a programmer you are. Like I said, would you rather your browser crash on every javascript bug? Because that's how a lot of client side software operates.
pixie_··on Babylon.js: JS framework for building 3D games with HTML5 and WebGL
This is just another technology connected with Microsoft that we should lament - right along with C#, Mono, Knockout, and TypeScript. Microsoft earned the ire of geeks everywhere in the 90s and it's a grudge many can't let go. Meanwhile you let Apple and Google steamroll you all by showing you what a real closed ecosystem monopoly really looks like. And you swallow it down because they do it all under the banner of 'open source.'
pixie_··on Performance of WordPress Hosting Companies Compared
Wordpress kind of makes me realize how incredible PHP is. It's a 'program of pages.' Which can basically hot swap update itself as it runs. You can download plug-ins in the control panel and extend the functionality of your site instantly. I still get mixed up trying to wrap my head around it even after 15 years of using it. It's a program that exists in different files that can be updated individually while the program itself is used. Most of the 'state' is temporary or stored in dedicated memcaches or databases. It makes you wonder what if other applications were written in a PHP style structure - what would that be like?
pixie_··on What makes Lua tick?
Why is it programmers love crashing their users for the most trival things? What if every javascript bug crashed the website you were browsing?
pixie_··on What makes Lua tick?
Does that make it like Objective-C because I love how accessing a null object doesn't blow up the application. So many trivial bugs in my iOS app that would have caused the entire application to crash are totally avoided. Unless you're creating software for the space shuttle, avoiding null exceptions entirely is a god send for my users.
pixie_··on Bootstrap-switch
If I click and drag the switch without taking my mouse off it gets stuck. I feel like if my mouse goes up the switch should go on or off, not stay in an inconsistent state.
pixie_··on Top Rift Experiences Right Now
Turn on pitch as well for mouse aim, I find that the optimal translation of 2d mouse look/aim with the ability to still use your head to look around what you're aiming at - just like a 2d monitor, but now it's 3d - woah.
pixie_··on John Carmack joins Oculus as CTO
Omni is smell-o-vision. Neat, but a bit too gimmicky.
pixie_··on Simulating 1 second of real brain activity takes 40 minutes and 83K processors
Each neuron is growing, making decisions about it's environment, reacting to a multitude of neurotransmitters with a mulititude of complex reactions. Deciding where are when to make a new connection. If each node is a little computer system how do we even begin to emulate its probably extensive and convoluted 'programming.'
pixie_··on *args and **kwargs in python explained
Personally it feels like spaghetti code. Tornado for instance is a web server written in Python and there are classes that have many parents and kwargs is used everywhere to pass named arguments up to each parent class in the constructor. The problem is it's hard to get a grasp by looking at the constructor as to what arguments should actually be passed to a class to initialize it. There's no contract or spec enforced in python so it's easy to see how errors can crop up by missing a random argument a certain parent class is expecting. It also makes it difficult to understand what a class does when the arguments a function expects are not declared.
