pinkyand··on Inside the world of legalised prostitution in Germany
If we consider using the services of a prostitute as emotional violence - which is a reasonable case considering the mental health risks of the profession - and as violence towards weaker people - we should disallow it on a similar basis to minimum wage laws.
pinkyand··on Inside the world of legalised prostitution in Germany
True - demand increases - prices rise.

But than new factories should open and prices would return to normal.

pinkyand··on Chromecast Rooted
> and for whatever reason wanted to hobble it with the same restrictions as Airplay

They want to work with the big content companies. The end game might be ads on the chromecast served through Google with the stick is access to chromecast and the carrot is ad-optimization by Google and maybe blocking pirated content.

pinkyand··on Your Anonymous Posts to Secret Aren’t Anonymous After All
It all depends on what are the powers your attackers have. If your attackers can monitor the whole web, inject packets as he wish and control every computer in the world - there probably isn't any way to offer secrecy.

On the other hand, if we're talking about an adversary with a more limited capabilities - maybe he can access only 50% of the computers in the world and that cannot crack encryption at will - Than there are papers talking about theoretically sound systems that can give you anonymity with very high reliability.

pinkyand··on The Strange and Curious Tale of the Last True Hermit
You're right. My knowledge is about the Buddhist traditions.
pinkyand··on The Strange and Curious Tale of the Last True Hermit
The kind of situation(of identity loss and connectedness to nature ,etc) is kind of a goal in eastern meditation traditions. But another goal is creating compassionate people who care about others while carrying that identity-less feeling with them. And true, one risk is that one would be happy with himself and isolate himself. But those traditions know and try to manage those risks.

And i don't think this loss of self comes from self introspection, but more from long solitude(which tends to break the psych construct we call ego).

And no wonder he like solitude so strongly - he didn't find happiness among humans before. Hopefully after he get released , he can find some way to make a living while having the ability to live mostly alone and in nature.

pinkyand··on Uber Opens Its API
UBER is reducing prices through both unfair and fair(ride sharing fr ex.) means.
pinkyand··on Uber Opens Its API
Valuations are about the best possible future. In that future , nobody uses a car but uses UBER to order a personal or a shared car(automated or manual). 17 Billion is nothing for that.
pinkyand··on YC Demo Day Session 1
I don't know. Could it be that rich angels are already investing small amounts of money into crazy tech startups ,but nobody hears about that ?
pinkyand··on YC Demo Day Session 1
What does YC bring to tech heavy startups except connections to funding ? because most of the risk there is technology risk , not market risk, and YC is no tech expert at those subjects.
pinkyand··on Cider Project: Run iOS apps on Android
In general Apportable sounds great. But in reality - we see little results, relatively. Lots of IOS only apps, still. None of the big guys, who would surely be interested in offering devices/app-stores with full access to ios apps have bought you.

So i wonder: why is that gap between the marketing and reality ? and maybe an emulator will close that gap ?

pinkyand··on Awesome-lua: A curated list of Lua packages and resources
This list replaces a centralized list. Maybe with the magic of git this will work better. Or maybe we need better community building and connection around such list.

But since such a knowledge source is highly useful for people, and very valuable and people could get lots of credit for helping(in theory), i could see something like this built up.

On the other hand comparing just the current list(5 days of operation) , with the best openhub or github search could offer for the queries "python cryptography" and "python xml", i don't think analytics alone should do. But sure analytics can(and are through Google/Github) being used to guide curators.

pinkyand··on Google, it's time – We want Scala for Android
> but in practise virtually everyone uses the dynamic typing only.

Why ? is it a social thing? or a technical thing?

pinkyand··on Google, it's time – We want Scala for Android
I agree that Google should add more languages to android. And while Scala is a great language, it's very complex - so it won't benefit many of the less skilled users.

A better language would be something with the simplicity and power of python, but with good performance.Groovy could be one such language.

pinkyand··on Awesome-lua: A curated list of Lua packages and resources
Personally i think human curation is much better than curation by activity analytics, and it can offer better context.
pinkyand··on Awesome-lua: A curated list of Lua packages and resources
Maybe the way to judge curation is by comparing curation+search to search alone. With good curation effort, i think that curation+search is a winner , at a relatively minor cost(needing more time).

Also curation has the benefit of being a useful discovery tool.

pinkyand··on An Iron Curtain Has Descended Upon Psychopharmacology
I have great appreciation for russian technology, but aren't those exaggeration ?

If setun , the ternary computer was so efficient - how is ithat today we use binary machines(and that in general the russians didn't have a moore's law ) ?

pinkyand··on Teaching Is Not a Business
Elizabeth Green , in her book[1] claims that this whole debate regarding teacher evaluation, free markets VS teacher autonomy is wrong. The answer lies in better teacher training. [2] Is an interesting article about that, which shows what can be done and how does it work when you offer better teacher training.

pinkyand··on Hackers Unveil Their Plan to Change Email
The doll concept sounds awfully close to either tor or anonymous remailers(which are much more private). But anonymous remailers had much trouble with authorities so i wonder how that will work.
pinkyand··on Corporate America Hasn’t Been Disrupted
for life like communication ,there's high quality telepresence that includes eye contact . does it lose the emotional element? how? and is it possible to add that element, by virtual reality ?
pinkyand··on Corporate America Hasn’t Been Disrupted
I wonder: were past disruptive efforts more sucsessfull in unseating incumbents ? And is Clayton Christensen theory responsible for bigger companies' better defense against disruption ?
pinkyand··on Rich Kid, Poor Kid: For 30 Years, Baltimore Study Tracked Who Gets Ahead
As far as i know, good parent-infant attachment is critical in shaping stable adults with good emotional regulation(because in this attachment process the baby learns how to regulate his own emotions) , and that emotional regulation is critical in good delay gratification(i.e. passing the marshmallow test).

We also know that stress while a mother is pregnant affects the epi-genes of an unborn kid, making him more susceptible to stress - which again delay gratification harder.

We also know from research that depression has a direct impact on negative attachment between mother and baby. We also know that poverty tend to increase depression and stress a great deal - it's just common sense.

In the same vane, we know quite a lot of other things on how to greatly increase the likelihood of creating mentally stable persons who have good delay gratification. Psychologists haven't been resting all these years, you know.

pinkyand··on Disruptive Innovation Doesn’t Always Hurt Market Leaders
In the same spirit , Christensen talks about incumbents improving their performance more than customers care about. It doesn't seem to describe the voice recognition industry ,at all. I'm not sure even today's voice recognition systems can be considered "good enough".
