phpthrowaway99··on Even after $100B, self-driving cars are going nowhere
If there's a car in front of you, and you're following at normal following distances, it might not be enough. That person will keep going decently fast, and your radar car will follow. The lead car comes to an almost instant stop when it hits, and while radar might pick up the hit, it won't be able to stop as fast as a car hitting a stationary car.
phpthrowaway99··on Nikola founder Trevor Milton found guilty of fraud
I wouldn't say he settle what I consider "securities fraud" even if that's the technical label, just like I wouldn't say someone that got a speeding ticket violated "federal interstate travel statues" by speeding on I5.
phpthrowaway99··on Nikola founder Trevor Milton found guilty of fraud
Oh yes, and when I paid my speeding ticket last week I proved I was smuggling drugs down the interstate.
phpthrowaway99··on What Counts as a Bestseller?
There are countless self publishing companies, and while idk if it's still active, even Amazon had a try at this.
phpthrowaway99··on Equifax used records it collects from companies to fire employees with 2nd jobs
I was in car sales. Top performers were caught borrowing used cars for nights out, secretly loaning cars to favorite customers for long period of time, buying tradeins secretly off the books, crashing cars while basically driving recklessly while transporting company cars to customers or off-site facilities, and not fired.

Low performers were fired because they answered incoming calls poorly twice in a week.

So it IS possible top performers were allowed to have side gigs and not fired at Equifax.

If you buy a Tesla, hopefully.its because you actually drive a decent amount. Otherwise, well, I think it's a waste. I live in a commuter town that most tech people wouldnt be caught dead in... Most people are blue collar. And there are a shocking amount of Tesla's and Bolts around.. why? Because they are great commute cars. If you don't drive much, and have $50-100k to spend, you buy an Audi or BMW. If you drive a lot, a Tesla makes sense.

Understanding that, yes most people would be in trouble if they got into their Tesla on Monday morning and it had.... 50 miles of range.

And you don't need to keep your gas tank at full because you can fill it up anywhere and everywhere at anytime in 5 minutes.

I heard that very often from my old college friends. And it made me laugh considering during 2020s harsh covid, media said half the people that get it don't even have any symptoms... And then when the vaccine came around, I was apparently going to die if I got it without the vaccine.

Apparently the nuance between some people can't even tell they got it, some people have a mild cold, and some people die got lost on some people.

Even bill Maher showed that democrats were over estimating death odds by almost 20x, while republicans it was about 3-4x I think.

That was maybe the crazies narrative on some Qanon site. I'm sure that was repeated often to make anti vaxers look insane. But for most anti vax people the narrative was "we have no idea if it's safe long term, and at the rate they seem to be pushing this on pregnant women right away, kids asap and apparently infants soon, I don't think I can trust these people."

I can't honestly remember or repeat what all the fringe doctors and researches, but yes doctors and researches, have said to convince me of my views.. but enough was said that you couldn't get me to take the vaccine for $100k, and I'm no tech millionaire.

That's a clever response, but sometimes you have to tell your mom she's a neurotic worrier, that you live at the end of a quiet lonely road, and live your life.

Not all roads are the same. And IMO the incidence and severity of covid has been drastically exaggerated.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
When I said other side, I didn't mean the exact other side of OPs view about long covid. I meant the other complete side of the covid spectrum.. aka the anti vaxers.

Maybe I wrote it poorly, technically English is my second language although I've been here for a long time.

My point is, these singular personalized emotional data points exist all over, on both sides of the spectrum. That's all.

Regarding me being coy... Sure, I'm so coy I'm taking probably the most hated position on this site. I suppose I should just open with "As a covid vaccine sceptic, " and have people shut down instantly instead.

I don't see how my own personal views matter in regards to what I said.

Even if I was pro vax, and had every booster under the sun, I could still just as easily post about how people on all sides of the covid spectrum have their own anecdata points... And bring up my coworker worried the vaccine is unsafe because his vaccinated and boosted boss, that seemed perfectly healthy, died in his sleep last week and now he's wondering if it was the vaccine.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
I washed my hands after the restroom. I said I never touched one of the (alcohol) squirter bottles or machines that were everywhere during covid.

Other note, I have many older coworkers. I'm not really in tech, although I have a decent Saas outside of work.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
Could be. Until omicron I basically never heard of anyone in my decently large social circle even getting covid.

I used to joke that if you offered me $100k to go get covid, I wouldn't really know how to go get it.

It is covid vaccine related which makes it somewhat covid related.

Ps, that post was more about a girl shagging a dog.. it was a short hair dog, not shaggy.

Edit: not fair you putting the explanation of what a shaggy dog story was. Ha.

I thought it was in reference to a post of mine from yesterday about a girl on POF I discovered gross pictures of right before a date.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
The implication was that these anecdata tales exist on both sides, especially one of just ONE singular anecdote.

I wasn't implying that covid is fake or the vaccine is harmful, although I have my own reservations. The point was singular data points exist on both sides.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
Here's a scary thought more scary than your platitude.

In 5-10 years, we might find that everyone that got the vaccine does die like everyone dies.. except they die several years earlier than average.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
What's crazier is that if you run in circles of the unvaccinated, you almost think it's all in everyone's head. I mentioned earlier I work in a company where almost no one got vaccinated. We're somewhat customer facing, but did wear masks when the state required it.

Almost no one has gotten covid of any of my friends/coworkers. I've been casual as can be, never touching a hand wash squirter, going out in SF outdoor and indoor dining if they didn't check, and haven't been sick since 2018 or early 2019. Before that, I was actually one of those sickness manchilds that honestly twice a year would almost be unable to function for an entire week.

I'm about starting to think people can will themselves into not getting sick, and maybe will themselves into it.

My friends don't believe in it, and I and others haven't sniffled in 2 years.

Downvote away for personal experiences Im sure.

He never had covid to anyone's knowledge, atleast he never took any time off for it and never showed symptoms. All we know is he was vaccinated, went to the gym, was energetic at work, and died in his sleep.

I was just making a point that covid related anecdata exists on all sides. In response to the guy above me giving out his singular anecdata point.

Edit: also, I had met the guy 3 years ago and talked for 10+ minutes.. and now he's dead at 49. So it was top of mind.

phpthrowaway99··on Nearly half of Covid patients haven’t fully recovered months later, study finds
I'm not implying anything. The people that want to use this anecdata for their purposes will say that it's really odd a healthy active guy dying suddenly in his sleep at 49 is very rare when he was operating regularly on Wednesday at work and didn't make it to Thursday.

What he actually died of, heart attach or brain aneurysm, or blood clot of some kind doesn't really matter because it fits their narrative either way.

phpthrowaway99··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
Be VERY glad she was upfront about it. That is a decently common tactic for women over 25.

My last relationship was practically begging to get her pregnant from the first 6 months. Eventually it didn't work out after 2 years.

Next guy met her, and got her pregnant within 2-3 months. Married 3 months later. He's set to inherit an 800 acre ranch on the coast of California very soon. He has no idea who he just married. The girl was a nightmare. I'm 38 and have serially dated for 20+ years, and I've never met a girl so mean and cold and unpleasant. I'm not sure if he's seen that side yet, and he's about to be a dad next month.

Everyone I know lists having a large home backup power source as the #1 thing they like about electric cars besides lower cost per mile.

If you leave your bubble a little you'll learn a lot. And Im only 50 miles east of your bubble.

phpthrowaway99··on Never pay for online dating (2010)
I once googled the screen name of a Plenty of Fish date I had setup. Exact match comes up on a 'weird' forum, with city and state matching in the info under the username.

One fake account later (required to view attachments), I saw pictures of her dog doing her in... Uh... various ways.

I stopped online dating for like 5 years after that.

phpthrowaway99··on UBI Would Likely Increase Poverty Rather Than Reduce It (2019)
If what people say is true and that there is a housing shortage, then yes, landlords will basically extract maximum available cash out of their local market.
phpthrowaway99··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
Oh you got me, I didn't read the policy when signing up. Like 98% of people.

Yet from a site dedicated to creating the modern web, I assume modern web practices are followed.

Even 20 years ago in forums you could go through and delete your posts and edit your comments to blank. Add in 20 years of "we should be able to delete our accounts!", I had figured HN follows this practice.

Whatever, I don't care, I just make a new username once every few months.

phpthrowaway99··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
Messaging people you're in a group with, or people that have an active ad isn't really what we're talking about.

Try messaging someone Facebook doesn't think you have a reason to message. It will go to a different inbox that I bet half of users don't know exists, and even those that do check it once a year.

phpthrowaway99··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
First off, thats not really in the spirit of account deletion in my opinion. Because you're making me pinpoint myself to another person that I want it deleted. Maybe I don't want a human browsing my stuff reading it wondering why I'm asking for it to be deleted. Even less privacy in my opinion.

But beyond that, it won't delete your messages. I guess they just own my words forever now.

phpthrowaway99··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
HackerNews, where people talk about things they know nothing about with the authority of an expert.

You can "message" anyone you want, except that if you aren't friends it will almost always fall in some weird secret hidden bucket that most people never look at, and is hard to find even if you try. If you share a direct connection it might go through, but in my experience not always.

phpthrowaway99··on Made in America is back, leaving US factories scrambling to find workers
I've been here for 40 basically, and while his comments were slightly exaggerated, they all basically ring true. The most exaggerated one is the smoke being THAT bad. Other than the 2020 smoke Armageddon I've never even noticed fire season. But I assume he just means that in general our public lands are mismanaged.

I've been offroading and riding dirt bikes for 20+ years. Without a doubt, fire roads in the mountains are falling into disrepair. When they do clear them, they do so so lazily that it for sure will alter their response time if they ever need to use them. And that's just one tiny example.

I think OPs list was pretty accurate, just a little exaggerated but I think you know what he means.

phpthrowaway99··on Made in America is back, leaving US factories scrambling to find workers
The scariest thing about California I don't think left leaning people realize, is that tons of conservative Californians are leaving.... and many of them are business owners. Not just business owners, but some of the most clever, hard working, helpful, interesting people Ive known. Between 2000 and 2018, several great people I knew died young. I used to say that only the good die young. But now the good also move out of state. My neighbor that would mow my lawn and sweep my sidewalk gutter if I was out of town. Gone to Nevada. Race car driver that owned a mobile office trailer building company. Gone to Idaho. Master electrician that could do work alone that would required engineers to reexplain to regular electricians, gone to Utah. Cabinet company manufacturer, family owned for 30 years. Idaho. The nicest most helpful towing company owner I ever met? Closed down this summer and went to Utah. I'm not exactly sure if I want to live here myself if all that's left is crime, tent cities, and tech workers.
