Another thing I was considering - automatically categorizing tweets by topic and filtering them based on each person pre-sets. For example, I follow a bunch of VCs - and I want to see their comments about Bitcoin while ignoring comments about Secret.
Also - thinking about an ability to mute/ignore a given topic (e.g. Politics), keyword, or author (without unfollowing them). WDYT?
I do need to add some intelligence to skim.io though.

In all seriousness, noise is the biggest problem I have with twitter. When you follow more than 100 accounts, the timeline becomes pretty much useless.
Your comment gives me another idea for my app though - we will make it so each of the Top 5 is from a different unique publisher... and if more than one of their comments are trending, we choose the 'fastest'.
Check it out, it's free, and it only wants read-only auth permissions via Twitter: http://skim.io/
Still tweaking the algorithm.
Edit: just installed Streak - it's exactly what I needed!

Why?
We are a startup, so any additional exposure is nice.
How do you choose topics?
Pretty much at random, but usually has to do with interesting data.
How do you promote your content?
Does blogging work for your business?
Still not clear. We do get meaningful traffic, but I suspect much of it is from techies trying to build analytics in-house.
mostly updates for my analytics startup, plus interesting patterns extracted from Twitter etc

Registered "tweetcoin" handle awhile back for one of the projects I am working on, and posted on Feb 9 (my single tweet) - "Exciting things in the works" was my comment:
Tried logging in today, couldn't log in. Ended up resetting pwd using my email account, and the reset link logged me in as 'tweetcoin1' - that's when I knew that my Twitter handle had changed from 'tweetcoin' to 'tweetcoin1'.
What's even more bizarre - another tweet appeared under that account. It was dated April 2012, and it simply said:
"This isn't your account."
1. How's simple (one could say crude) these looked back in the day - yet that didn't prevent people from signing up.
2. How quickly things age online - it only takes a few years for your UI to look ancient.
This one is all about the velocity. It's also interesting to see the dynamics, what keeps a given tweet afloat (e.g. many Favorites aren't as effective as RTs - and the tweet flatlines).
It looks at people you follow, what they write, and how quickly their tweets are gaining Retweeted and/or Favorited. Shows you Top 5 tweets only.

Would love to get some feedback!
I'd also spin off a separate product for marketers (based on the same engine, but without the global trend noise), make it useful (there are a few ways to do that).
