philote··on AI real-time human full-body photo generator
Yeah I think that's it.

Also, it's way too easy to make something that looks like (or basically is) child porn with this tool. I chose Adult but something else keeps triggering it to generate a child-like face like in the image I posted. And as you showed, it's easy to get accidental NSFW pics.

philote··on AI real-time human full-body photo generator
Yeah, this was my first attempt: https://generated.photos/human-generator/64e648819c8c0400088...

Not quite right. I am, however, impressed that the fingers are generally "mostly" correct.

philote··on Server-side rendering is a better choice for many applications (2020)
Personally, I'd prefer website to apps. Most apps don't have good reason to be an app over a website other than to better track users (like reddit's app for example). Also, I can easily visit a website from any web browser, but apps need to be installed first.

Yeah, I don't get how it'd be cheaper at all. Yes you need a backend anyway, but unless you're not paying for usage and have spare CPU cycles and bandwidth available, it's not cheaper. It's cheaper to send your frontend html+js and let the browser cache it so it's only sent once, and let the frontend pull only the data it needs to render the html. The backend isn't having to process a template, or resend similar html constantly to the frontend since most of that likely cannot be cached.

Django is a super heavy framework that includes most anything you'd ever want. There's a ton to learn. Have you tried lighter-weight ones like Flask? I much prefer a lightweight web framework with an easy-to-use ORM/ODM.

Also, even though you don't use frameworks, I assume you use various libraries to handle web requests and such, right?

philote··on Short session expiration does not help security
Maybe the machine is secured by not allowing anything further to be installed on it. Or maybe it's not. I've heard most crimes are due to opportunity, so it's best to protect your users from accidentally leaving themselves logged in on a shared computer for the next person to find that opportunity.
philote··on Software Engineering at Google (2020)
I feel like even their main products are shoddy as well. How can they recommend good, relevant ads if they can't even recommend good news articles, music, or videos? If I do any search in Google on a topic, even if it's just to get a tiny bit of info about that topic, Google decides I'm interested in it and will make recommendations based on that one, single search. Or sometimes I'll buy a product and start seeing ads for similar products later. That's not good targeting IMO.
philote··on Positive association between altitude and suicide in U.S. counties
I'm curious if they controlled for sunlight then. I'm in a mountainous area and many areas (like where my house is) have mountains blocking sunlight for multiple hours in a day. Couple that with being in a wooded area and even some summer days can feel dark and gloomy. But in my case, being surrounded by nature far outweighs the lack of light in terms of depression.
philote··on The Tetris Effect
Also, to title it "The Tetris Effect" and then ramble on about a 3d version of Tetris first seemed really odd. I only skimmed some of the article (due to the horrible font), but I'm not sure what the point of it was.
philote··on Mac Mouse Fix
This has not been my experience at all. For me, I had hand and wrist issues until I stuck with an ergonomic keyboard (Kinesis Advantage2). It's been like 6-7 years now and I've had no problems since.
philote··on Apple already shipped attestation on the web, and we barely noticed
I guess that's only for Safari, but not Chrome if you have that installed as well? Also, what if you never signed into your iCloud account? Is it impossible to disable?
philote··on The case against self-closing tags in HTML
Wouldn't you need to add another <table> tag if you're nesting?
philote··on 15-20 more federal holidays
The article specifies paid holidays, so it wouldn't make it more difficult to make rent. But I agree that business will do what they can to avoid that, and hire only part-timers like you said. There could be laws introduced to help counter that though.

Edit: oops, the article actually doesn't seem to specify paid or not. I'm also guessing the author is used to working salaried positions and not hourly.

philote··on Why is desalination so difficult?
I'd guess that if anything they'd increase the pressure to raise the boiling point. That way things dissolve in it faster and the water doesn't evaporate away.
philote··on Why a browser and mail combination is worth it
I'm curious how long ago your Fastmail experience was. I've been using it lately and haven't had any issue with RSVPs (at least that I know of). I also often see people who don't RSVP to anything, so I'm surprised interviewers would see that as an issue.
philote··on Is Google reCAPTCHA GDPR Compliant?
Blocking others from signing up or using the username they'd prefer. For example, the bad actor could spam the registration with valid email addresses and depending on how your system handles registration it could either send validation emails to those addresses or block the person that owns the address from signing up.
philote··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
I think a better comparison would be the operating costs of Wikipedia/Wikimedia [0]

I think non-profit versions of social media can easily happen from a financial standpoint. The big issue would be adoption.

philote··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
So as a moderator, you're ok with having to pay to better do your unpaid moderation duties?

Edit: Also, I'm curious how much you'd be paying.

philote··on Failing to draw lines between ‘script’ and ‘program’
I've written "scripts" that do things like create a user, run migrations, or do some processing on a file that pull in either or both of 3rd-party libraries or other code I wrote (ie. db models). So the "contained in a single file" for me isn't a hard requirement. I do think the rest of your points are accurate though. I'd also add that a script runs until the task is done, and no longer. Whereas you may have other programs, like web services or queue workers, that continue running and doing their tasks.
philote··on Microsoft is bringing GPT-4 to US Government agencies
Looks like you missed it: "Chappell wrote that because Microsoft hosts the models in its Azure infrastructure, any data sent to them stays within the Azure OpenAI service, and added that data from Azure Government customers won’t be used to train the AI models."
philote··on Why not tell people to “simply” use pyenv, poetry or anaconda
It's really not an awful idea in general, but might be for a user like you. I'm not sure if you read the article but it details the many various types of users and why they may use Python projects and libraries. Having an executable available will make installing the tool much much easier for some users. And you can still have the source code and regular packages available for those that know how to handle it.
philote··on Why Perl?
You could always use a tool that compiles your Python or Perl program into a standalone executable.
philote··on Reddit.com appears to be having an outage
I run into issues on occasion, usually with loading comments. I use the web interface.

Interestingly, HN is being really slow for me right now and also gave an error when I first loaded it. Maybe something more global is going on, like network or cdn issues?

philote··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
I played Alyx some and it was neat, but I didn't get terribly far into it as it wasn't very compelling for me. Maybe because I've never played the other Half Life games?
philote··on Ask HN: Has anyone switched from a professional job to a more manual one?
On the flip side, having a desk job can also ruin your body unless you make a good effort to get up and move or exercise frequently. For some of us it's easier to get exercise if you have to for your job.
philote··on Solving Intermittent Cable Modem Issues
I feel like you can simply do a visual inspection of cables before running an entirely new line to your house as described in step 2. I had intermittent outage issues with my cable internet before, and was able to find where squirrels had chewed through the insulation on the outside line, which would cause outages or issues when it was wet.
philote··on Lithium-ion batteries a growing fire hazard in NYC garbage trucks
I'm here wondering how "wrong" that wrong way would be... I have a few tubes to get rid of as well, and my local trash/recycle drop-off won't take them.
philote··on Lithium-ion batteries a growing fire hazard in NYC garbage trucks
I'm from NC as well, and moved from a major city to a rural area. For me, both have similar disposal options. In the city, you had to go to a trash drop-off center to dispose of batteries (same place you'd take used oil or other hazardous waste, as well as regular trash or even yard debris). I think the difference is, in the city you have trash pickup and can't just toss batteries in with the trash or recycle. Whereas out in the country you have to take everything to a drop-off center, so you're probably more likely to dispose of batteries properly since you don't need to take an extra trip to do so.

philote··on Will boiling water ruin green tea?
I always forget when do subtract or add, or divide or multiply. So I use the known conversions 0->32, 100->212 to help remember.
