philmander··on Hey, GitHub – Waiting list signup
This is effectively a new higher level programming language without a fixed syntax. Describing more the "what", not "how", and being much closer to natural language over computer language.

The voice part seems like an (albeit important) accessibility add on.

I'm sure it won't be perfect but an amazing step forward in the evolution of programming languages

philmander··on How Weight Training Might Change the Brain
In rats

And it does change the brain in rats. It might change the brain in humans.

philmander··on How Utrecht Became a Paradise for Cyclists
I should have said "misleading"
philmander··on How Utrecht Became a Paradise for Cyclists
This isn't accurate. They were not made for bikes.

Is was only in the 70s and 80s when there was a revolution in the introduction of cycling infrastructure.

philmander··on How Utrecht Became a Paradise for Cyclists
This has been such a positive change in Amsterdam
philmander··on Domain Storytelling: A DDD tool to visualize domain stories in the browser
There seems to be some overlap with a UML business use case which can be used for modelling requirements.
philmander··on Transpiled For-Of Loops Are Bad for the Client
One upon a time web developers had to wait for browsers to support new features. Using Babel does not automatically mean that this no longer true.
philmander··on The Myth of the Cool Tech Girl and Why She's Dangerous
I don't know. It all seems very alien to me. But I often see blog posts like these which make it seem ubiquitous.
philmander··on The Myth of the Cool Tech Girl and Why She's Dangerous
How widespread is the "toxic bro culture"? Is it regional or a particularly silicon-valley thing. Is it more common in startups or with younger employees?

Do most techies personally relate to this sentiment?

philmander··on Surviving injuries from falling
Not a counterpoint at all. Without his aikido skills he might have sustained a much more serious injury!
philmander··on Ask HN: Starting a project today, which web framework would you use?
I started one recently with Preact + Mobx. Very happy with it
philmander··on M.M.A. Fighter’s Pummeling of Tai Chi Master Rattles China
The belief in chi/qi power is deeply rooted in Chinese martial arts. Something that has no scientific basis.

The point here is not which fighting style is better, but that the tai chi master does not have any mystical or superhuman chi power he can draw upon to defeat his opponent. This is "the fraud" Xu Xiaodong wished to expose.

philmander··on A response to “An experienced JavaScript dev’s account of learning React”
It's often seen as an advantage of React that it's just a view library and not a framework. But if you want to build any reasonable kind of modern web app, you'll need those extra elements like routing and state management. You effectively must piece together your own framework and the cognitive overhead of this is huge. At least for the first time anyway.
philmander··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted hiring a developer?
Showing some enthusiasm doesn't mean centering to your life around it
philmander··on Milk that lasts for months
There's quite a big different between 72°c and 140°c. Would 105° produce a semi-long lasting milk that doesn't taste quite as different (bad) as UHT?

Also, are there any other downsides to UHT besides taste? Are more nutrients lost?

philmander··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted hiring a developer?
I thought it was interesting. But that was probably just me!
philmander··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted hiring a developer?
I'm not sure what to make of that.

Assuming the product isn't genuinely boring, is it the norm then that developers without a direct financial incentive in the growth of the company should just be drones who type code in exchange for a salary?

philmander··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted hiring a developer?
I've regretted hiring a few developers who have been apathetic about the actual software product we're making.

I am sometimes too optimistic about a technically proficient candidate sharing these traits, during the interview process.

After hiring they are depressingly unexcited about delivering a new feature that promises business value, significantly improves performance etc. It's just work to be done.

philmander··on We can teach women to code, but that just creates another problem
I've worked primarily as a frontend developer in the UK and the Netherlands for 12 years now and my experience has been exactly the opposite.

Although men still outweigh women I wouldn't think it unusual to see a female Java developer (I've mostly worked in java shops)

However I can only recall ever even interviewing one female front-end developer. From my experience they are incredibly rare.

Maybe my experience isn't typical or maybe it's geographical. Or is the article too subjective?

philmander··on Using Neutrino to jump-start modern JavaScript development
I hear you. Node.js made my Ant tasks for running jshint and qunit totally redundant :(
philmander··on Using Neutrino to jump-start modern JavaScript development
After just reading the title, I assumed the same thing, but actually this is exactly what web development needs.

create-react-app is a great example of a project that abstracts away all the complexities of a JavaScript build process and dev environment, but customization inevitably requires you to 'eject' and reintroduce that complexity to your project.

This tool goes one step further and supports customization without this eject step.

This is finally where web builds need to be to provide a simple foundation for modern web development so devs can focus more on making apps and less on tooling.

I look forward to trying it out.

philmander··on Show HN: A visual guide to the most popular CSS properties
Very useful.

You should consider serving a separate page for each property in addition to one big list. This would be more useful for quick Google lookups.

philmander··on Ask HN: What simple tools or products are you most proud of making?
I've just made this interactive periodic table of elements.

It's a periodic table that you can interact with like Google maps or similar. Zooming in progressively reveals more information about each chemical weekend element including images, video and Wikipedia content
