philfrasty··on Amazon's internal numbers on Prime Video
„tout the death of the broadcast industry“

Slightly OT: YouTube will be big in „live plus same day“ this year. Boxing match of KSI vs Joe Weller [1] drew 1.6 million live viewers and 16 Million on the (official) released video after. I'd estimate the announced fight of KSI vs Logan Paul in August to yield closer to 5 or up to 10 million live viewers with a massive „same day watching“ after.

Sure the content is not for everyone but might be a glimpse at what a younger generation prefers.

philfrasty··on Security Researchers Publish Ryzen Flaws, Gave AMD 24 Hours Prior Notice
Do you know where the line is between what e.g. Citron Research is doing and what is considered slander? (I assume they walk a very thin line in order to not get sued)

Their Shopify video [1] for example is not the typical „research report“ with lots of specifics but more of a personal opinion with rather broad accusations.

philfrasty··on Round Peg in a Square Hole [video]
Personally I can learn MUCH faster (+ enjoying it) by looking at someone doing/explaining something in a video (e.g. coding). To take it even further: if one person (expert) explains something to another person (not an expert on this specific topic) and the non-expert frequently aks questions. This helps tremendously.
philfrasty··on Ask HN: What is your best way to learn a new programming language?
Do you know of any website doing this? Similar to language tandems where each person brings something to the table.
philfrasty··on How Dutch Police Took Over Hansa, a Top Dark Web Market
If you don't mind German (or subtitles) there is a hilarious documentary on YouTube about one of the biggest drug sellers on SilkRoad named „Pfandleiher“ from Bavaria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frdpQF4bVJ4

He talks about his „setup“ (old car repair shop), routine to drive to different mailboxes, etc. Got busted when meeting with people offline from Austria to sell larger volume. German police got curious when they read in Mexican internet forums that the most advanced drug seller is located in Germany with 3 day shipping to Mexico.

I am genuinely interested: How do you feel about Saas pricing in general coming from India? Also how do Indian Saas products differ from e.g. US ones? Is it only the pricing point?
philfrasty··on Launch HN: Shogun (YC W18) – Storefront Builder for ECommerce Sites
How does this compare to most builtin page builders in themes on e.g. Themeforest? „Compare“ as in: why does Shogun seem to have SO MUCH MORE potential in YC's POV?

For comparison: a top-selling theme on TF with a top notch built-in page builder is usually around $50 to $70 one-time fee. Shogun with similiar features in the most expensive version is $60 per month.

philfrasty··on Ask HN: How do you keep a good posture when you spend most of your type sitting?
Tip for anyone who wants to get into working out but has a hard time sticking to it: sign up for something where you book classes at a fixed time instead of just signing up for a gym. I have been working out at regular gyms for the last 10+ years (it's part of my biz) and recently switched to Crossfit with fixed-classes...insane how the combination of fixed appointment + small group fosters discipline/motivation.
philfrasty··on It’s time to ditch SMS-based 2 Factor Auth
CCC has all their media in English as well. If you click the little settings-wheel on the right side of the screen, you can select English.
philfrasty··on It’s time to ditch SMS-based 2 Factor Auth
I think another important point is device separation in general. Vincent Haupert is talking about this in the context of mobile banking apps during the last CCC: https://media.ccc.de/v/34c3-8805-die_fabelhafte_welt_des_mob...
philfrasty··on Bitcoin faces regulatory crackdown, Bank of England warns
If I remember correctly the founder of TenX said in a video that 40% of all Fiat <-> Crypto money goes through Coinbase alone...which ties (a lot of) future transactions to a passport verified person.
philfrasty··on Show HN: Web Scraping in Google Sheets
for low-volume requests Airtable is also pretty nice to use in an Excel-like fashion with a dedicated API (free for a couple of thousand of entries).

edit: except missing the scraper part haha

philfrasty··on Ask HN: What's a good static site generator to use for a blog in 2018?
Do you know who Ghost's intended target audience is? Their pricing at $29 (monthly) for hosting a simple blog seems bizarre when a DO droplet with pre-configured Wordpress is $5 (lots of other simpler WP hosting services out there).

Edit: ok, pricing page says „For professional bloggers“

philfrasty··on Email exchange between MIT Media Lab and the IOTA Foundation [pdf]
Can someone explain which side leaked this? The blog seems IOTA related but not affiliated.
philfrasty··on Days Since a Cryptocurrency Exchange Has Lost More Than $100M
I thought so too until I actually used one. The experience is worse than I ever imagined possible (sure there is room for improvement). Additionally the two you mentioned only support ERC20 tokens.
philfrasty··on General Mills to buy pet food maker Blue Buffalo for $8B
curious: if the bones aren't cooked, isn't the pet spreading bacteria with (possible) resistance to antibiotics throughout the entire house?
philfrasty··on Finding Pwned Passwords with 1Password
Slightly OT but anyone has a REALLY easy password manager solution?

I tried migrating my entire family to a 1Password family account. Honestly for people with limited tech-knowledge even 1PW is still too complicated.

- In 25% of the cases it does not save e.g. the username correct. Explaining my parents how to open the app, edit the login, etc. is just not gonna work.

- they don't prefill logins (like e.g. Dashlane) so you either have to press the icon or do the keyboard shortcut. Again not suitable for someone who is not very technical.

- On some sites (even big ones) the user/password inserting simply does not work. Explaining them how to open the app, copy user/pass, switch to browser... not gonna work.

- generating random passwords and filling them on registration page does not work 100% either

- using it on mobile is just horrible.

Only thing I could come up with would be (on a Mac) the built in password „manager“. Any ideas? Hate people using their birthday as pw just because there is no easy solution to this problem.

philfrasty··on A $232M Cryptocurrency Fight Comes to a Close
Can someone explain how one foundation (that manages a BILLION dollars) can simply be replaced by a new foundation?

Having talked to some lawyers in this space during the last weeks I have come to understand how much money is involved here in compensation/fees/listing-fees/advisor-compensation/etc. It is insane. So not really surprised any more regarding their internal conflicts for $$$.

philfrasty··on Introducing Airbnb Plus
Honestly a little disappointed. Thought the „Plus“ would be more like an offering like Amazon Prime in the sense that you wouldn't have to pay these „AirBnB fees“ every single time you make a booking and instead pay a membership fee. (hate these fees displayed separately - why not display a single price to the customer - I don't care what it consists of - edit: and while we are at it, please get rid of these absurd „cleaning fees“ that get misused by dozens of hosts)

philfrasty··on Facebook admits SMS notifications sent using two-factor number was caused by bug
Reminds me of a seller on Amazon I bought from who misused the customer's phone numbers to ask for reviews (as a seller myself I honestly don't know why Amazon would display them publicly at all). One day I get a 500 character SMS: „Do you want 20 coffee-tabs FOR FREE? Just leave us a 5 star review on XYZ and email xyz@evil.com blablablabalbla“.

Turned out to be the quickest 1 star review I had ever given.

philfrasty··on OpenSCHUFA – Reverse-engineering the algorithm of the German credit score agency
+1 for owner. Luckily you can choose (still).
philfrasty··on OpenSCHUFA – Reverse-engineering the algorithm of the German credit score agency
I guess the likelihood increases if you go through one of the newer screen-tenants-first-online-platforms or the building has hired a property management company. Going through newspaper-classifieds or owner-let apartments yielded 100% no Schufa for me in Munich + Berlin.
philfrasty··on OpenSCHUFA – Reverse-engineering the algorithm of the German credit score agency
„...even trying to rent an apartment in Germany...“

While this MAY be true in a lot of cases it certainly is not all the time. From my experience 50/50.

philfrasty··on Origami Simulator
Beautiful job!!

I find immense pleasure in looking at 3d-structures like this. Sometimes I just close my eyes and try to visualize these, the task seems to be so complex for my brain that it really shuts off every other thought I have.
