philfrasty··on Engigogo Digest – A weekly newsletter of links and product suggestions
There is an entire issue of the newsletter on the page. If you like it subscribe, if not pass. Really that simple.
philfrasty··on It’s weirdly hard to steal Mark Zuckerberg’s trash
"I reached out to a representative at Facebook to confirm how Mark Zuckerberg disposes of his garbage, but as of press time, they did not respond."

Reminds me of the question in a Q&A "Mark are you a lizard?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x61_mGQciJE

philfrasty··on Susan Kare designed the suite of icons that made the Macintosh revolutionary
Oh those memories, thank you Susan <3 I will never ever forget that bomb-icon. It scared me to death. I would run to my dad and ask him what I should do / had done wrong. So damn proud when I didn't have to ask him some time later bc I was prepared. (5 to 7 years old maybe back then)
philfrasty··on Ask HN: What tools do you use to automate your business?
[Praise]

[Explain]

[Shameless plug]

I approve.

just kidding. UI looks great. Does this go in the Intercom direction?

philfrasty··on Vipassana for Hackers [pdf]
"...when the sensations get too much we [can] turn them down..."

I can only speak for myself but a) realizing this and b) actually figuring out the real noise sources were a (first) breakthrough for me. Not too obvious to figure out when I think back some time.

philfrasty··on Ask HN: What are well designed SaaS websites?
Quick feedback on fairpixels.co/pro: clicking "Get started" (blue button top right) breaks the site, nothing happens, scrolling is broken afterwards. Mac Safari Version 11.0.3 (13604.5.6)
philfrasty··on Ask HN: What are well designed SaaS websites?
I found Slack rather poor in explaining what they are doing. This text is basically their entire landing page.

"When your team needs to kick off a project, hire a new employee, deploy some code, review a sales contract, finalize next year's budget, measure an A/B test, plan your next office opening, and more, Slack has you covered."

Do they offer A/B testing? HR tools? Code deployment? Who would have guessed it is chat.

Their /features page does a better job: "It simplifies communication. Slack brings all your team's communication together, giving everyone a shared workspace where conversations are organized and accessible."

philfrasty··on Why Entrepreneurs Start Companies Rather Than Join Them
I don't really see how you separate tech from other entrepreneurs? Entrepreneurship is vast and mostly outside of tech and high-paying organic-vegan-glutenfree-catering tech-startups. If you run a hair salon your education level will most likely be much worse than most tech founders and your "seed money" is a high-interest rate from your local bank. Your margins are so slim that at the end of the month you are indeed an entrepreneur but paid under minimum wage on an hourly basis. To me tech founders seem to be in a much better position to start a company - all things equal - contrary to your description.

philfrasty··on Setting Up a Cayman Islands Company [pdf]
„...or if you aren't obligated by law to pay federal or state taxes...“ this is the key sentence here and mostly not talked. Many people do not understand that you may have to pay income tax even though a foreign company/entity holds all profits/cash/assets. For Germany see the „Außensteuergesetz“ https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/astg/__7.html
philfrasty··on Form a California LLC in 10 minutes for $70
Expanding on this: can someone recommend resources (books/videos/articles/etc) on holding structures (interested in US and Europe)? This is such a scammy industry and Googling only brings you so far. To clarify: I DO NOT want to evade taxes, just separate operational risk.
philfrasty··on Learn React by building a web app
If one enjoys learning by video I can recommend "The Net Ninja" on YouTube. He has a series on React.js (as well as many other languages and frameworks): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4cUxeGkcC9i0_2FF-Wht...
philfrasty··on YouTube and Facebook Are Losing Creators to Blockchain-Powered Rivals
I see a lot of articles talking about ad revenue. For most YouTubers ad revenue is minuscule compared to what they make on product placements. Someone in the lifestyle/beauty segment with say 300k subs on YT (and similiar IG following) might make 500$ in ads a month on YouTube but 8k to 10k per product placement. This doesn't include multi-post deals (usually YT and IG combined) that will yield (from what I have seen) 40k to 60k in collaboration with e.g. big beauty brands.

philfrasty··on Show HN: Travel spontaneously on a budget
ok, not a native speaker, thought "on a budget" refers to cheap/saving money/low in price.
philfrasty··on Show HN: Travel spontaneously on a budget
Can someone enlighten me what the „on a budget“ in the title means? Do they have some special deals? Feels like a booking.com with a „take me anywhere“ button on first look.
philfrasty··on Email marketing for e-commerce
Read the domain + title, thought Stripe is launching Mailchimp competitor (...10/10 would sign up...)
philfrasty··on Medium suspended our account and blocked access to all our published stories
That is a bit like saying "I never understood why people who can self-host video put it on YouTube". Most times your content will never reach a significant audience (if this is your goal), platforms like Medium/YouTube/Flickr/500px make discovery easier.
philfrasty··on Congrats Dropbox
Oh come on Drew, after ringing that bell I want to see a cool "hi" by dhouston as the top comment.
philfrasty··on Hedge-fund managers that do the most research will post the best returns
Do you know how these algo funds keep a competitive edge for so many years (e.g. Renaissance 30+ years)? I am trying to understand their "kind" of product innovation as in what are the biggest factors they are continuously trying to improve?
philfrasty··on YouTube’s fake views economy
The far bigger problem from my POV which is not described in the article is manipulation of YouTube trends. This is to some extent related to buying views but needs a special kind of attention.

A few weeks back I noticed weird videos in the German YouTube trends, things like "cheap iPhone cases buy now" with channels that had zero subs. A day later there were 3 of these videos in the trends, the next day 6, then 50% of the trends were full of this. A guy with 0 subs even made a video explaining that he does this kind of manipulation for a living...and unsurprisingly the video made it into the trends the same day.

Simply buying views has very little effect (except on maybe advertisers that pay you) but gaining massive exposure through being featured in the trending videos is big.

philfrasty··on Zuckerberg summoned to House Of Commons inquiry
Curious about this scandal: is the bigger play here (by some unknown actors) to damage Zuckerberg's reputation in order to hinder him running for president in 2020? Or this is purely about violating privacy?
philfrasty··on An Analysis of the Impact of Arbitrary Blockchain Content on Bitcoin [pdf]
There was a tweet [1] from Vitalik Buterin on this exact topic. He was arguing that „possession“ (as in data on the blockchain) does not impose risks on others. Tweet was removed quickly.

philfrasty··on Postmates postmortem: eight hours as delivery drivers
This seems to be common across the globe with this "business" model. Drivers get paid minimum wage and have to pay gas/repairs/etc themselves. Recent documentary [1] on Foodora in Berlin where a driver even had to go to court because they didn't pay his salary for the previous months.
