phil··on Patent troll stalks travel site Hipmunk
This is a 1994 patent. Looks like it should be expiring in Nov. Better hurry up with that suit, patent troll!
phil··on Gates: Apple may have to make a Surface-like device
Delusional.
phil··on The Next Microsoft
The fascinating thing about Microsoft today is they find themselves in such a strategically desperate position that they are beginning to change that attitude.
phil··on Mixpanel introduces People Analytics
What are you using now? Do you like it?
phil··on Cheddar
I don't understand the hate in the comments. Two things:

1) The simplest applications are still hard to polish this much. In fact, simple things can often hide some of the hardest design choices.

2) Three years ago, Twitter apps were the UI design playground of choice. Now that they've told everyone not to write new clients, UI experimentation has shifted to other applications. Compare Cheddar to Clear, for example. Both are nominally to-do lists, both have carefully thought out custom interfaces, but they express very different philosophies about software design.

phil··on Facebook CTO Bret Taylor Departs (For Start-Ups Unknown)
I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is yes.

Typically, if you're in a position where you'll often have material non-public info you need to create a trading plan in advance, or otherwise remove your ability to trade the company based on all the secret stuff you're always going to be knowing. Look at it that way and for the CTO of a large public co., their own departure is just going to be the last of many, many pieces of info make it problematic for them to trade the stock.

phil··on Why ‘Ok’ Buttons in Dialog Boxes Work Best on the Right
Better yet, avoid modal dialogs.
phil··on Internet Archive Sues to Stop New Washington State Law
Archive.org's donation page is here: http://archive.org/donate/index.php
phil··on Camera+ turned down acquisition offers and says no to VC money
Camera+ has not always been $0.99, and it has in-app purchases. A revenue estimate that doesn't take those into account is going to be way off.
phil··on Obvious Goes Beyond Meat
These guys are doing such awesome stuff.

I like eating meat, but would love to live in a world where Big Macs are made from vegetable protein and all meat is raised locally/humanely and fed a healthy diet.

phil··on Dropbox fixes app rejection issue, complies with Apple's rules
Wonder if some day they'll do the same thing to Facebook as well, since you auth in Safari if the FB app is not installed and you can buy ads on the FB site.
phil··on On Why I Am Not Buying RubyMotion
It's often been necessary -- most recently, iPad apps needed to be built against a new version of the SDK to correctly use 2x graphics on the new iPad's high-res screen.
phil··on Doing It Right, Not First
It's not even clear that you have to do it right.
phil··on Why Instagram is so fast at uploading photos
This is such a great deck. Unless you're working on a photo sharing app, this slide might offer more generally useful advice:

phil··on Apple to crush carriers, become direct service provider
Is there an MVNO yet that's not just barely scraping along? They're in a lousy bargaining position and most seem to just get crushed.
phil··on Apple to crush carriers, become direct service provider
...according to random pundit trying to get attention at industry conference.
phil··on Why Instagram is so fast at uploading photos
Did Instagram v1 had this feature?

They added high-res photos in v2 and the early upload seems like maybe an attempt not to have the app start feeling much much slower.

phil··on Ask Valve employees: How well does the flat organization work?
Flat organization doesn't mean you can't hire an office manager, it just means the office manager doesn't have a boss either.
phil··on IKamasutra: Apple Hates Brunettes
The crazy thing is the #4 paid app is this violent fantasy about shooting people with a sniper rifle and that's apparently OK:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/clear-vision-17+/id500116670?...

The #5 paid app is a scam designed to confuse (check out the reviews):

phil··on An Open Letter To Those Not Employed At Instagram
Hipstamatic lacked sharing, at least when Instagram came out. That was the thing that set Instagram apart -- it did this popular thing with photos on your iPhone but bolted sharing on.
phil··on Crockford on Bootstrap's semicolon omission: “insanely stupid code”
Look, I know the rules. That's why I leave the comma out.
phil··on Crockford on Bootstrap's semicolon omission: “insanely stupid code”
What's wrong with it? It's like arguing about grammar. We've been going back and forth on the Oxford Comma for at least 300 years now, with no end in sight.
phil··on Instagram raised $50M right before acquisition
What makes you say that? (The article contradicts you, for what that's worth).
phil··on The Apps are Too Damn Big
Oh. I didn't realize you could apply a device modifier to an image. Thanks.
phil··on The Apps are Too Damn Big
There's a png in the project. Is it an icon that's used by both iPhone and iPad? A background image used by only one? A texture they share? The nib and @2x annotations don't handle that stuff.
phil··on The Apps are Too Damn Big
This would definitely require more work on the developer's part!

Right now the situation is: toss whatever you want into the bundle and it's there everywhere. For what you're proposing to have any benefit it would have to be: add files, annotating them with whether they are needed for iphone/ipad, keeping those annotations updated as you work.

phil··on The Real Leadership Lessons of Steve Jobs
Well put. There's certainly a lot of that, and even worse it can often seem like a competitive advantage.

But there is good work being done, like http://ourchoicethebook.com/ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD8Zrruo6fE and there will be more in the future.

phil··on The Real Leadership Lessons of Steve Jobs
What would taking it seriously look like?
phil··on Source: RIM begins laying off high-level staff
The crazy thing is, this is good news for RIM. If Heins really cleaned house with the execs and he replaces them with people that can see reality, that's probably the only chance for RIM to stay an independent company.

It's not clear that is what will happen. But at least now there's a chance.

phil··on Source: RIM begins laying off high-level staff
That's code for "we're talking to other companies about what we have that we can sell them."
