phil-martin··on I hacked Monster Energy
The major issue was the trajectory of impact, particularly when the ClickUp access was attained. If the person doing it was malicious, participating on that platform could have quickly led to some social engineering that led to accessing private business critical intellectual property, staff names, contact information, and accessing more systems.””

Definitely not a nothing burger.

phil-martin··on Konva.js - Declarative 2D Canvas for React, Vue, and Svelte
Which makes it ill-suited when you need multiple canvases. Pixijs is amazing, and I mix Pixi, Fabric and regular canvases in my application.
phil-martin··on Show HN: Evolving Agents Framework
Nice work on the framework, it looks really interesting, I can't wait to give it a go.

I have a question though - in the very first part of the readme:

"A production-grade framework for creating, managing, and evolving AI agents with intelligent agent-to-agent communication."

What makes this production-grade?

phil-martin··on Java-Based No-Code and Low-Code Application Bootstrapping Tools Review
I developed a what I would consider a pretty small application with Power Apps, and it was an incredibly impressive platform. Internal application, about 200 users, 2000ish records of data generated each day.

However, I wouldn’t want to build anything in it again. The amount of gymnastics required to work with and around those kinds of limitations (500 records) through pagination, error checking, retry logic. I ended up needing to implement things I wouldn’t want even my worst enemy to maintain. Definitely nothing wrong would expect a citizen developer create or maintain.

But it’s ability to easily bring together multiple data sources, consistent uni-directional dataflow, and lots of other things made it a rally nice platform to work on

phil-martin··on Gross Apple Marketing
Because they took the time to write a long letter, and were thoughtful enough to have it shortened to save you time when reading it?
phil-martin··on "Men are not raised to share feelings" Male Patients' Discourses on Group CBT
That would have been a tough environment to walk into, having your instincts shout at you there was a fight about break out.

I think there are a lot more than just two types of intimate spaces for men.

The best part is people have the ability to create new spaces, then keep iterating and trying new ideas. And even more excitingly they aren’t static, they can change and adapt to what the people in the group need.

To use a part of your anecdote, that therapy group you went to sounded like not what you wanted or needed at the time. But one could imagine another guy walking in and see the facilitator with earrings and lipstick and say to themselves “oh this is amazing, I feel safe here knowing I can wear makeup and won’t be ridiculed”

It’s different for everyone.

Each individual has a responsibility to create and shape the world to be better, depending on their capacity, sphere of influence and ability to do so.

Right now my capacity is very low, so I’m depending on others for support.

But in the future I very much hope to set up groups or ways for guys to connect in a way that fits what I wish I had access to.

One specific example of when I’ve these this implemented exceptionally well is a wood working group I saw. The premise is you come and do carpentry, but what really happens is trust is built up over time. At some point an thereshold is reached where newer people feel safe enough to share, and then were able to talk about things going on in their life and get some practical support and advice.

It’s so rare so see such an effective blend of what you described as the extremes of brotherhood or therapy sessions.

phil-martin··on Large language models reduce public knowledge sharing on online Q&A platforms
I approach it the same way as the things I build myself - testing and measuring.

Although if I’m truly honest with myself, even after many years of developing, the true cycle of me writing code is: over confidence, then shock it didn’t work 100% the first time, wondering if there is a bug in the compiler, and then reality setting in that of course the compiler is fine and I just made my 15th off-by-one error of the day :)

phil-martin··on Bug squash: An underrated interview question
If the goal was to objectively evaluate ability in a broad population, I 100% agree. However, if my dev shop primarily uses Python then selecting for people familiar with Python is pretty reasonable.

Thankfully there is a giant corpus of terrible code out there for any language. Especially that code written by the most evil terrible coders of all time: past-self :D

phil-martin··on Show HN: Stipple Effect – a scriptable pixel art editor to make game art faster
Oh it makes total sense, for sure. Sorry if I came across pretending it is simple, it absolutely isn’t.

I guess that’s the role of tool builders - is to find ways to do the impossible to support artist workflows.

The first step is to find out if the end user would even want that workflow in the first place. Maybe it makes no sense, to work that way. But if it is valuable then starts the hard part of figuring out if it is worth the programming acrobatics to implement it.

phil-martin··on Show HN: Stipple Effect – a scriptable pixel art editor to make game art faster
I’m no the target user, I haven’t built games in years, but I loved watching the videos, and your approach of making a sprite editor for doing real work.

Many many years ago I built Quake 3D model editors. One of the features added in was being able to paint on the 3D model and have it update the original texture. The ability to make little tweaks to texture in-situ was really valuable to fine tune the art asset.

When I watched the video of Stipple Effect, I loved the live output window showing the result of the combined sprites.

The first thing that came to mind was “If I was the artist I would love to draw I the result window and have it update the input sprites for me”

I fully get the challenges with implementing that, but it might be a valuable addition to the workflow, being able to work on the art with one less abstraction level

phil-martin··on Font with Built-In Syntax Highlighting
I think it is more that it doesn’t load any resources automatically from external sites, a common way to share visitor information with third parties without JavaScript. For me it’s a sensible way to earn trust .

There are many third party links that you can click on, which does align with the original ethos of the web.

phil-martin··on Launch HN: Firezone (YC W22) – Zero-trust access platform built on WireGuard
One of the pain points I’ve experienced with configuration of traditional VPNs is when devices physically connect to different parts of the network when staff travel between home and different offices.

For a small example, when working from home, we want to connect to SMB shares over the vpn, with regular traffic going over the regular LAN interface of the computer. When the same person comes into the main office, just use the LAN. The simplest solution is to teach users to make sure they turn their VPN off when in the office, but that’s a super easy step to forget.

Could Firezone help managing these quality-of-life details for end users?

phil-martin··on When ChatGPT summarises, it does nothing of the kind
It’s certainly not perfect, but I would definitely not class it as useless in many circumstances

Asking it to do a summary on a paper or meeting notes I’m mot familiar with, yes the utility is very limited exactly the way you’ve pointed out.

However, asking it to summarise or shorten a paper or meeting notes I’ve been directly involved in - that has enormous utility for me.

It provides me a quick starting point to create summaries, and I get to see if the salient points are addressed, and if not, I get to add them in.

I’m no a fast writer, and often experience writers block, so having a fast way to start is enourmously useful to me.

phil-martin··on Show HN: Supertone Shift – AI powered Real-time voice changer
I can think of a few applications of this technology, although some may fall into the deception category, albeit harmless in my view:

- overcoming social anxiety in voice or online calls. It doesn’t take very many bullying incidents during childhood to become convinced you have a horrible or weird voice. I can see this being used as a useful tool to make people feel more comfortable by having a different voice

- amateur interactive fiction development. Having your characters have a real voice in a game in response too the players commands is a real need, and being able to record it yourself and be a different character would be a huge enabler of creating something for a solo developer.

- internal HR videos/podcasts. Creating these can be very expensive, needing different persons reading out dialogue could significantly reduce the effort in recording and producing these

- another instrument for music creators. Auto tune is a very common tool for music production for all skill levels, and this could be applied in a very similar way

It no doubt can be used for disingenuous purposes, any technology can. But these can be real life improving tools enabling many people to do things they never thought possible.

The idea of participating in Q&A session in a webinar would be far too confronting and inconceivable for many people, but to be able to do it semi-anonymously with a different voice would eliminate much of the anxiety preventing them

phil-martin··on Show HN: Jeeves – A Pythonic Alternative to GNU Make
Oh definitely agree on the non-idiomatic python. I was thinking less of "how to correctly implement and write the python code" and more of the "learn the history and decisions on why it might do things, and the user experience of defining a build in python". I really liked its consistency of repeatable build steps, the way it handled it's dependencies, and accepted the tradeoff it presented for slowness. But its been perhaps 10 years since I looked it, likely longer, and rose coloured glasses are applicable.

And nice work making SCons faster!! not at easy thing to do at all.

phil-martin··on Show HN: Jeeves – A Pythonic Alternative to GNU Make
The most comprehensive make alternative in python I've seen is Scons (https://scons.org/)

It would be worth to see how they tackles some of the challenges you're looking into.

Blurb from the website:

SCons is an Open Source software construction tool. Think of SCons as an improved, cross-platform substitute for the classic Make utility with integrated functionality similar to autoconf/automake and compiler caches such as ccache. In short, SCons is an easier, more reliable and faster way to build software.

phil-martin··on Finding a Job in Tech Is Almost Becoming Impossible
It feels the article was light on details and data, but the gist I got from it was that it is now harder to secure a very high paying job if you are at an early stage in your career?

In Australia the number of job ads seem to be as high as ever, but advertised salaries (when they do advertise them) are perhaps a fraction lower.

What is it like for people in other regions?

phil-martin··on Expressive text-to-image generation with rich text
It feels like that is where the real value is. Imagine describing all the assets of a game, story, or something larger than just a single image as mainly "what" descriptions, referring to broad styles of things. And then a second body of text detailing those styles in detail.

It could be a text description of a fighter or noble wearing coats or armour. And then substitute in different style description of coats and armour depending on the family, class, race or other attributes suitable for the world you're trying to generate.

phil-martin··on DJI Mini 4 Pro
I use headphones to listen to music or audio books while hiking, walking or exercising. I enjoy it, and also a useful tool to stop mental self-talk while being able to enjoy the surrounds.

But playing music over speakers that would interrupt the tranquillity of other people trying to enjoy the quiet and space is very not cool.

phil-martin··on So you want to write a GUI framework (2021)
It's been bugging me for years, but I don't really enjoy modern HTML/CSS for fluid layouts when it comes to forms.

To do really nice form layouts in a desktop application, alignment and sizing of labels across the entire form becomes really important to me. Products like Developer Express that have a dedicated form layout work so well for this. And some of the swing layout managers I've used (I can't recall the name, too long ago) make complicated form layouts much more sane than grid, flex and other css layouts.

phil-martin··on So you want to write a GUI framework (2021)
Oh wow, I haven't thought about Jidesoft in YEARS. I used it back in the early 2000 to add some much nicer data grids, toolbars and other things to our mining software package.

Those were the days!

phil-martin··on How to reduce stress and overcome anxiety as a software developer
I've interacted with a few business/life coaches over the years, and I have found that clicked perfectly for me.

To find them a combination of: - Using search engines for "life coach" or "business coach" in your area

- Find people that you respect in your industry, reach out to them over twitter/linkedin/email/whatever, clearly stating you're looking for a coach, and if there is anyone they recommend.

After you find a few, I suggest just trying them out. Book some sessions and see how it goes. I use these criteria:

- Has worked with engineers in the past.

- Is able to clearly articulate boundaries and approach in the first session

- Willingness to test and measure. Understanding and appreciating the lean startup approach essentially.

- Is solution and goal oriented. Spending weeks/months talking about the problem without attempting solutions is a waste of everybodys time.

- With you can quickly develop a shared understanding of what success looks like.

- Can build a rapport with you, and you can build the trust required for total honesty.

What if instead of offering free trials to everybody, you estimate how many free trials you could afford, and limit it to that?

In exchange for the free trial the potential customer gives you permission to use it as a demo for others to try out and see how it performs.

phil-martin··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
I guess it comes down to how one defines side project? I interpret it to mean side-hustle

And you just asked the big questions - we have only successfully managed to find customers by word of mouth. We get the occasional person who stumbled across GamePlan from a Google search, but that is becoming more and more rare

I built it with a old colleague part time. We were trying to solve our own frustrations with planning, and just kept adding more things. It’s been an enormous amount of fun to do.

phil-martin··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Been chipping away at this as a side project for many years - Visual Project Planning and Scheduling. Draw on a whiteboard and it makes a levelled schedule for you. It has resources, equipment, and much easier to understand than MS Project.

I have had a blast building it and it is hard to market - but the people that do stumble across and use it, the visual way of planning really resonates with them.

phil-martin··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids
This really interests me, and I want to set up a similar system.

Can you describe the massive difference it’s made for family?

phil-martin··on Building software to last forever
It feels like the idea of refining something to the goal perfection is not mutually exclusive to the idea of being adaptable.

To me it implies that since the definition of perfection is always changing, you are continually altering course to get closer to where you want to be.

phil-martin··on Accounting For Developers, Part I
One of my favorite resources on accounting is https://www.ledger-cli.org/3.0/doc/ledger3.html It's application specific, but has enough examples in there to remind me of accounting principles from years past.

Combined with the other plain text accounting resources, it was the first resource that made everything "click" for me, well, for varying definitions of "click". I often refer back to it when I need to remind myself of things.

One thing on my todo list to expierment with is modelling double entry accounting as a graph, with nodes of the graph an account, and edges of the graph a transaction with the two amounts on the edge.

That's nice and all but the part I'm really interested in experimenting is modelling reconciliation as equivalencies of graphs. I have a separate graph that models the real world bank accounts and flow of cash, and organisational flow of money, and then I have my accounting graph that models all the transactions. For reconciliation I would go "these whole bunch of edges in this graph A are the same as all these other edges in graph B"

I just want to see what falls out the other end...

phil-martin··on Car Seats as Contraception (2020)
preposition: cum combined with; also used as (used to describe things with a dual nature or function). "a study-cum-bedroom"

So in this case "rolling death trap cum molotov cocktail" means a rolling death trap that becomes moltov cocktail, in a rather unpleasant explodey fiery fashion.
