pherocity_··on First C# 7 Design Meeting Notes
They are including almost all the frameworks you would use as well. They weren't set up to take pull requests, and I suspect that they're only interested in bug fixes. So, not entirely genuine.
pherocity_··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
I work for a government, I just contribute to waste. Now I'm even more depressed.
pherocity_··on Is running ads on a programming blog worth it?
I block ads because advertisers/networks don't respect the do not track flag. I don't want to block ads, but I value my right to privacy more than I value your right to monetize my eyeballs. If the ad companies played in good faith, then I wouldn't have to circumvent them.
pherocity_··on Purism Aims to Build a Philosophically Pure Laptop
I don't think it ever will be. I first installed redhat linux back in 95, and it was a multi weekend project, and I had to solder something. Since then, the installation has gone from insane to Windows XP easy, but it seems stuck there. And even for a media server, I have to dip into the shell to get it working. If you still have to use the shell 20 years later for a non edge case, it isn't going to get better, there is something about the architecture that is preventing it.

And I don't want an office suite, or movie recorder, or any of that crap. But I want the Gnome Terminal, or other pretty terminal where I have font smoothing or whatever that is called. I know I can do this with Arch, but I'm not a systems guy, I'm a developer, and I don't want to have to learn about all the systems crap. I just want a shell that is pleasant to look at, my fatigue is so much less when looking at pleasant non offensive colours.

pherocity_··on What should I do about YouTube?
"Do no evil" hasn't been followed for quite a while, but this is downright vile.
pherocity_··on Diagnostic page for Google.com
Just a smidgen. If you sign up, I would have 1 user. But it's safe.
pherocity_··on “I paid $25 for an Invisible Boyfriend, and I think I might be in love”
Well, we really don't know any of that though. We know that spending money on experiences create lasting happiness for a statistically significant portion of the population which is a larger number of people than those that derive more lasting joy from spending on purchases. And even that is self reported.
pherocity_··on Diagnostic page for Google.com
My personal site is literally safer than google by google's own tool.
pherocity_··on “I paid $25 for an Invisible Boyfriend, and I think I might be in love”
It's not about forcing, it's the arrogance that you inherently think somehow know better than the people that want to consume the service. People who think like that are the people who vote like that and suggest that I change my behavior because they don't think I'm capable of making the assessment on my own. Kinda like what you just did with my language.

You can have any opinion you want, but the moment you put it out there, someone else gets to have an opinion about your opinion. My opinion can be that your opinion is dangerous, and "bullshit".

We would do far better in society if we actually believed in our fellow man, rather than thinking we knew better than them.

pherocity_··on “I paid $25 for an Invisible Boyfriend, and I think I might be in love”
> "and they think that this is what they want, but I honestly believe that nobody want to risk to fail in love for a nobody..."

Wow, that's a whole lot of bullshit right there. That kind of thinking is why we have religion and politics. Men thinking they know what is best for everyone else.

pherocity_··on iCloud Terminal Notepad
I use todo.txt for this. Works well across my devices. Besides, it's done by Gina Trappani (of ex-lifehacker) so supporting her is good too.
pherocity_··on Is 'SimCity' Homelessness a Bug or a Feature?
But it generally is, relative to the other forms of government. Democracy is the only form of government where you can prosecute corruption or end corrupt regimes without violence, and in my book that's close enough. For a simplified game mechanic, this is intuitive and makes sense. Anything more nuanced, and it isn't a game anymore.

pherocity_··on Shellfire – A repository of namespaced, composable shell function libraries
I love the idea, I've also been frustrated, and there has been chicken and egg problems which this may help with. That said, the quote:

> "And lastly, because we're fed up with having to install half-an-universe's worth of Ruby, Python and Perl to bootstrap our servers or run CI jobs"

If this takes off, some will use it some won't, and we'll be stuck installing a "half-an-universe's worth of Ruby, Python, Perl, and Shellfire scripts to bootstrap our servers or run CI jobs"

pherocity_··on CSS Styles for cooler looking ascii-art
Although, I like the Mona Lisa example, I have to think that the point of ASCII art is to look like ASCII art because if it doesn't, then it's just a shitty picture. Cool POC tho.

I didn't use the word extra.
pherocity_··on James Watson's Nobel Prize Medal Will Be Returned to Him
I was making the numbers up, because we cannot exclude and accurately asses racial and other socioeconomic conditions. So the numbers on Wikipedia do not tell any more truth than me making them up. The point, is that whatever the numbers are, they're irrelevant as nothing useful can be done with the data.
pherocity_··on The Workman keyboard layout (2010)
Not a vim user I see.
pherocity_··on Update on Sony Investigation
I suspect they know who did it, and they have data that would expose just how much they know and do not want to disclose that information. They possibly know because they've compromised an allies system to do so, and providing that information would expose this vector and compromise relations. These guys aren't incompetent, full stop. Saying so may make you feel better, but we have all the proof in the world about their capabilities.
pherocity_··on James Watson's Nobel Prize Medal Will Be Returned to Him
I didn't down vote, but the inherent bias in the test is a possible reason but even with that factored out, the relevance is a more reasonable objection. We're not talking the difference in between being able to grock quantum physics or not, we're talking a few questions on the exam. And IQ happens to be a pretty sweet bell curve, so if you're an average white guy, then you're still dumber than 49% of the black guys out there, and dumber than 54% of Chinese guys.

So we should give up on Africa because the average black guy didn't answer the 2 train question correctly? Should we also give up on Europe and North America because the white guys didn't answer that correctly either?

The use of this stat, were it even possible to be accurate, really only serves racists. No meaningful outcome could result from the number.

pherocity_··on How to program computers (kOS)
Those aren't different definitions, they're all examples of artifact waste. If something has multiple examples, it doesn't mean it has multiple definitions.
pherocity_··on How to program computers (kOS)
Meaningless snarl? How DRY is your code, and have any refactoring attempts been made to dry up the code. Do you have unused functions, methods, classes that are there because you think you might need them in the future. Does every binary have all the code for other architectures that are not specific to the current platform of execution. Etc... I could go on with several more examples, but it's the exact opposite of illusionary.
pherocity_··on Popular Myths about C++, Part 1
I'm getting so tired of the word myth and how it's used so incorrectly. These may be misconceptions, but they are not myths. In truth, some of these are factually accurate and you're framing them as a misconception to drive a narrative. I can't help but consider that link-bait, even though structured differently, this would be a good article.
pherocity_··on Crowdflower CEO: My Board Fired Me. Here's What I Learned
Asking for stories over advice is equally short sighted, and isn't going to go any better in the long run. Just because something worked for Bill at UltraTech doesn't mean it's going to work for you at PunchStarter.
pherocity_··on The 50% divorce rate stat is a myth, so why won’t it die?
Seriously?
pherocity_··on The 50% divorce rate stat is a myth, so why won’t it die?
Sorry, but this is bollocks. We don't know what the number is because we don't have the data or an agreed upon methodology to calculate the stat. But I have seen stats that do indeed put the rate in the 40% range; whether you agree with the methodology or not, does not mean that the number is a myth. And any pedant saying that 46% isn't 50% is correct, but clearly missing the forrest for the trees.
pherocity_··on Microsoft: More Money from Samsung Than Skype, Windows Phone and Xbox Combined
In my view, this isn't acceptable. You have to think that if the patents were so valuable, Microsoft would be able to leverage them and create a phone that surpasses Android because Microsoft doesn't have to pay for all those patents.
pherocity_··on Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition now available
Mercurial is fine, but git had github, so that kinda won the war. And not having 7 version control systems to know is nice. So think of git as lingua franca.
