pg_bot··on Burkey Belser, designer of the nutrition facts label, has died
RIP to Mr Belser.

I hope that we can add nutrition labels to alcoholic beverages in the near future.

pg_bot··on Samsung unveils monobloc heat pump for residential applications
If you can get refrigerant to a lower temperature than -10, you can still grab heat from the outside environment thereby heating your house.

If you're traveling as fast as voyager 1, it would take over 2 million years to get there.
pg_bot··on Researchers use AI to find new magnetic materials
There is a company called Niron Magnetics based out of Minnesota that looks promising. They are making an Iron Nitride magnet that supposedly is better than neodymium. Since it's made out of iron and nitrogen it should also be a lot cheaper to produce.
pg_bot··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
It's honestly not that hard. Given that both parties are serious about working together, even considering rescinding a signed offer is ridiculous. There aren't many reasons why a company could legitimately back out of an employment contract, and those can be added to the fine print. If the company want to be protected against potential criminality or an injury that would cause you to be unable to perform the duties of the job you can write that into the contract.

Everything is negotiable, you just have to ask.

pg_bot··on Flexport is rescinding a bunch of signed offer letters
If you negotiate an employment contract make sure that there is some sort of break up fee in case a company tries to pull this sort of nonsense on you. There's no reason why someone should be able to upend your life without due compensation. Accepting a job offer is not something that is done on a whim for most people, so it should be fairly easy to add in a clause that states "If this offer is rescinded for any reason after it has been signed by both parties, {{COMPANY}} agrees to pay 9 months of the negotiated salary to {{EMPLOYEE}}"
pg_bot··on RadioShack’s new owner plots old comeback strategy
There are a couple of operators who seemingly have a decent amount of money but are atrocious at running businesses. Radioshack's previous owner Retail Ecommerce Ventures has the reverse Midas touch. It shouldn't be surprising that trying to transform into a crypto hub fell flat as they were two years too late to the game and all of the smart money has left that market entirely.

I don't see much value in the brand anymore. The only pivot I could see is switching to an online only store, but even then you're competing against the entire internet for selling commodity parts. This does not seem like the most profitable use of money for investors. It's ok to let it die.

pg_bot··on Building Nikola Tesla's Bladeless Turbine [video]
I think the limiting factor on this type of turbine is the material you use to make the disks. As the disks get bigger the rotational stresses increase. To be practical the stress induced would need to be below the ultimate tensile strength of the material. Since these turbines need to spin at extremely high rpms and need to be fairly large to be efficient, there's no practical material that they can be made of.
pg_bot··on Ask HN: Problems for the next decade?
There's absolutely no reason for benzos to be over the counter. They're extremely addictive, can have really bad side effects and contraindications, and can be fatal during withdrawal. You should be under the supervision of a physician if you're taking them.

pg_bot··on New York set to ban gas furnaces, stoves in new buildings
Hmm you should've only needed a 3 ton unit for that amount of square footage and those cost about 2-5k. Was there some other kind of work that needed to be done that you aren't mentioning? You should've seen prices around 8k for the unit plus installation.
pg_bot··on Photos from the SpaceX Debris Field
Too difficult/expensive to ship stuff
pg_bot··on Photos from the SpaceX Debris Field
There are a few local activists who have been staunchly opposed to spacex expanding into the Boca Chica area. I find it perfectly reasonable that someone would not want a rocket company in their backyard, however if you are going to be launching things into space you are somewhat geographically limited. You want to be as close to the equator as possible to take advantage of the faster rotational speed of the Earth and you want to have an ocean to the east in case there is an accident so that debris doesn't hit anything on land. The area should ideally be relatively remote so that testing doesn't cause too much of a disturbance, but populated enough so that you can get supplies and workers. This leaves you with two options if you want to launch spacecraft in the united states, south Florida and south Texas. There really aren't any other options if you want to be as efficient as possible.
pg_bot··on New allegations of plagiarism against Roy Lichtenstein
If this were the music world, Lichtenstein would be drawn and quartered by the legal system. These are nearly identical works and even a moron in a hurry would think that they were by the same person.

pg_bot··on Ask HN: WWYD? Built a company valued at $1B and may walk away with nothing
You need to buy time. Right now your biggest priority is to stop losing money. Can you cut expenses or staff? Can you raise prices without losing all your customers? Can you get more customers? You need to act as if financing will not be available to you, because in honesty it might not be.

If you don't figure this out within the next few weeks, you will find yourself without any options and will need to either close the company or take whatever lowball offer you can get.

pg_bot··on Life expectancy in the U.S. varies greatly by region
One thing that also should be pointed out is the race gap in medical outcomes. When you look at the statistics Black Americans face a higher risk of stroke, heart attacks, cancer mortality, infant mortality, maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, pneumonia, etc. In almost every leading cause of mortality in the United States there is a significant gap between Native Americans and Black Americans and the rest of the population.

My sense is that there is a combination of culture and poverty that is causing this gap to occur. Poverty doesn't seem to be the sole cause IMO (although it's probably the biggest factor) because white people and asian people experience similar levels of poverty but asians live way longer.

pg_bot··on SVB collapse: Peter Thiel’s role scrutinized as spark of bank run
You totally can do that, it's not illegal! Schenck v. United States is a pretty odious court case I wouldn't want to be on the censor's side in that one.

pg_bot··on SVB collapse: Peter Thiel’s role scrutinized as spark of bank run
In theory a restaurant that is over capacity and catches on fire should be able to have everyone exit without death or injury. In practice, people panic and act in their own self interest leading to disaster.
pg_bot··on SVB collapse: Peter Thiel’s role scrutinized as spark of bank run
It's not a straw man to call this a prisoner's dilemma. The bank went from well respected institution to receivership in approximately 24 hours. 42 billion dollars worth of deposits was taken out of the bank. In the amount of time it would take to coordinate everyone (assuming they would even cooperate), someone else would've beaten you to the punch and removed their money. Every additional person that has made that decision puts you at risk of holding the bag. I do not fault any of the VCs who requested that their portfolio companies pull their money out. They saw the writing on the wall and were trying to protect themselves, the companies they invested in, and their LPs.
pg_bot··on Instead of paying adults more, states let companies hire kids for labor shortage
I've seen back breaking poverty, kids as young as 5 breaking rocks into 50 pound bags of gravel making less than $1 a day. My heart weeps for them and I do help them financially by sending them to school.

I don't believe in magical thinking. People will do what they need to in order to survive. I understand why people have such a visceral reaction to kids working, but action is generally better than waiting around for someone to save you.

pg_bot··on Instead of paying adults more, states let companies hire kids for labor shortage
I didn't grow up poor, but I wasn't given an allowance and there was no expectation of my parents buying frivolous things for us. If I wanted magic cards or to go to a concert I had to pay for it myself. Having a job at a young age taught me the importance of saving and the value of a dollar. It also gave me more ambition, I didn't want to be stuck at the grocery store forever. I moved over to the hardware store at 15 and used the skills there to learn how to build things. Those skills directly transferred into helping friends building robots for the FIRST competition my senior year of high school. We then became world champions, so I guess it worked out for me.
pg_bot··on Instead of paying adults more, states let companies hire kids for labor shortage
My first job was when I was 14, working the express lane for a grocery store after school. The job was easy and I wanted money, what's wrong with that?

pg_bot··on Sono Scraps Solar Car and Dismisses Almost Three-Quarters of Staff
I don't think it's a timing or execution thing. You can have the best engineers and operations on the planet and it still wouldn't work. The benefits of the solar car are just not big enough when compared to a standard electric car.
pg_bot··on Sono Scraps Solar Car and Dismisses Almost Three-Quarters of Staff
If you do the math, solar powered cars are not going to work. You just don't have the available surface area on a car to provide enough power to charge it in a reasonable timeframe. Plus solar panels add weight and manufacturing complexity. If you're building an electric car you would be better off spending your time trying to make the car more aerodynamic or weigh less. The only way I could see it working in a production vehicle is with an rv that can have its panels fold out while stationary. Any investor worth their salt could do 10 minutes of math and figure out that this is a terrible idea.
