pferde··on Red Hat being phased out of existence?
...and have it fail spectacularly when deployed in an environment that requires reliability performance and high availability. Yes, I honestly can't wait to see those horror comedies unfold, but hopefully far away from me. :)
pferde··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
From the screenshot on the project website, it seems "@serv.er" is part of any remote nickname, so I'm assuming the nicks are in per-server namespaces, which prevents any nick collisions.

Although it must wreak havoc on many IRC clients, since the @ sign has a very specific meaning in the IRC protocol. :)

pferde··on Parley: Federated, decentralised chat that speaks plain IRC
This has been an issue for as long as IRC itself has existed. There are solutions to resolve such "netsplits" and "netjoins", but they all rely on the servers in the network being trusted and not malicious.

With Parley, where anyone can bring their own instance, and they are not guaranteed to not to be malicious, that could be an interesting issue to solve.

pferde··on There are no "rogue" AI agents
Forget russia, we have emboldened, determined and dangerous fascist USA already to worry about.
pferde··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
Are we, though? Going to want to scale this up, I mean.

Unless economic systems around the world change significantly very soon, this AI replacement you so cavalierly mention would cause significant portion of human population to reach poverty, causing much unrest and mass deaths.

pferde··on Goodbye Google
How much of what you list has been "democratized"? Apart from the forum, and probably the browser, nothing. And both of those things are of questionable goodness to humanity.
pferde··on Goodbye Google
That depends on your definition of winning. Some of us couldn't give a rat's ass about speed, and for me Chrome lost because it's not an user agent (as in agent working for me, the user) anymore, it's a Google agent (as in working for Google to spy on me, the user).
pferde··on F-Droid 2.0
Why would Fdroid do that? They even package and offer some of these alternate clients in their own repository.
pferde··on Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop
KDE Connect is a great program in this regard, allowing you to share all kinds of things, including contacts or clipboard contents, between connected devices.
pferde··on Abandoning Scientific Linux Was a Mistake
I suspect that at the time they had to make a decision, Rocky Linux was not in good enough state, so they went with Debian, and now they already standardized around Debian, so no need to change.
pferde··on ZuckOff Know when a camera is in the room
I'm guessing it's not even aware of it. The billionaires all live in their own reality.
pferde··on Replacing Pull Requests with Delta
That's like not putting protective guardrail on a staircase, and instead having first aid kits and emergency phone number on hand. In other words, dumb and irresponsible. Possibly illegal, depending on the case.
pferde··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
It's become so bad that even quality history youtube channels are frequently using euphemisms like "moustache-man" instead of just saying "Hitler", to avoid their videos being buried by The Algorithm, and therefore cut severely into their viewership.
pferde··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
If you ask LLM to code something for you, and you then work on the code, then yes, there is partial ownership. Just like if you had asked another, maybe junior, developer to write a piece of code, and then you helped them make it better.
pferde··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
That's just it. you didn't "build so much", you didn't build anything. You asked someone (or something) to build it for you.

How can people look at LLM-generated code and think "this is mine, I made this" is beyond me.

pferde··on Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude
I would immediately stand up and walk out of there. That's my time you're wasting!
pferde··on Mistral X Mozilla: Private, Multilingual AI Browsing
Neat, how can I turn it off?
pferde··on Make your first edit to OpenStreetMap
After you create an OSM account, there is also https://maproulette.org, which has tons of little tasks to fix, grouped into challenges, and many of them can be done using just the aerial photos, from the comfort of your seat.

Then there is also mapping for humanitarian purposes, https://tasks.hotosm.org/, which has mapping projects prepared by disaster response teams, and you can help by updating maps of areas recently affected by disasters. E.g. recently there was a lot of mapping in the area hit by the August river flood in Nepal.

pferde··on Mistral raises €3B
We're still deep in the research and exploration phase, who knows what will huge oodles of compute be useful for in the end? Maybe it will end up being used by the owning corporation or local nation state, against similar amount of compute wielded by another corporation or nation state.

After all, what else than governments and corporations will be left after the rest of us poors will inevitably be priced out of the economy?

pferde··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
Yes, last night we all voted and decided to move to its successor RSB instead.
pferde··on Muse – Meta’s personal AI agent
What if he trusts the wrong experts? And who decides which expert is right and which is wrong?
pferde··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
I guess it depends on what community/bubble are you in. Many fediverse users I know have always been, and will always be tooting.
pferde··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
Pedophile?
pferde··on “Tweet” and the bird logo apparently enter the public domain
Wasn't it basically the X11 window system logo?
pferde··on Mistral raises €3B
No, I think most of the recent huge datacenter buildups are for US AI efforts only in the AI arms race, not to be rented out.
pferde··on Mistral raises €3B
Thank god.
pferde··on Unified Arabic
But it's mostly like all the dialects, with some extra stuff on top that the dialects tend to drop.

I'd say if you just want to quickly be able to speak with people around you, learn the local dialect, but if you want to really learn Arabic long-term, learn fusha, and you'll have easier time understanding most dialects later.

pferde··on LG smart TVs caught logging audio with screen off and snooping on local devices
And those jurisdictions need to have people not susceptible to bribery or extortion by the corporations making those data collection devices. That's a big ask.

pferde··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
Lack of MTE is not the only huge reason why the GrapheneOS team refuses most devices. Most vendors' lack of timely bugfixes for device-specific drivers and firmware, and no commitment to keep providing bugfixes for a number of years is another major factor.
