No it's not, it's either two continents Europe and Asia or one continent Eurasia (or even more rarely Afro-Eurasia), but certainly not part of Asia, it's like saying North America is part of South America, it can be either North America or both are part of America, but North America is certainly not part of South America.

stabbings ≠ murders
petodo··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Because it works in general? Even the worst country in Europe [1] (Latvia 4.9 murders/100k pop.) by murder rate is better than US average (6.6/100K) [2] with France 1.1, Germany 0.9, etc. So unless you choose extreme in Europe you are looking for sure at least at 3-5 times lower murder rates in Europe.

petodo··on Japan Breaks with U.S. Allies, Buys Russian Oil at Prices Above Cap
Yes, that's why US does everything they can to prevent investigating who caused it, same with UN and US allies when it come to investigation who sabtaged NS.

But of course it's conspiracy theory, let's just label it and ignore smoking gun.

petodo··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
nah, it ranges from non-existent (for most of the city roads/streets) to okay, most of the roads dont have bike lane at all since all available place where they could be is taken by parking spots

also there is no point for (e)scooters in Prague considering trams, buses and subway operating everywhere for less than a 0.5USD per day for unlimited travel, which is why pretty much no locals use them, they are also pretty much impossible to use in extended city center with cobble stones

petodo··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
As Xennial father of 2 kids - cars happened, when I was growing up in 80s families had at max 1 car, some didn't have car at all or used it rarely only on weekends, now many families have two cars, which they use on daily basis + same thing happened in companies which could do without cars back then. Back then I was riding bike 8-9yo to the other side of the town 2-3km and played there in forest or next to river with friend who lived there.

My 2nd grader started to walk home from school (~1km, two busier roads, one without crossing and bunch of smaller roads without crossing) by himself couple of weeks ago and he is still rarity in his class. Last week his class teacher refused to let him go without special paper despite he had no problem to leave from (after) school club for weeks already, where I specifically written he can go home by himself whole school year to not write paper almost every day. My mistake for writing in initial registration I am picking him up, now with younger kid joining the school she will have straight from 1st grade written in official documents she can go by herself and it will be only up to our agreement how she will get home without dumb teachers stopping us.

petodo··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
Traffic is definitely problem in Europe as well and main reason I am affraid to let my kids roam free, you don't need to have large pick up truck to kill kid driving faster than speed limit or not paying attention to driving.
petodo··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
Not that my kids would do it (I get always praise how well behaved they are, I'd be actually happier especially if my son was more wild), but pissing people off is completely legal and not police business. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it illegal.

For instance buying apartment next to basketball playground and then complaining about kids playing there basketball and making noise is not police business but idiots call police on kids having fun, apparently they should be better staring at phones at home, so old people can then complain kids nowadays don't spend enough time outdoors.

Thanks for tip! We are flooded by these also in Prague, can't walk normal on sidewalk, as if cyclists riding on sidewalks was not bad enough.

petodo··on A New Beginning for LifeHacker
they definitely didn't coexist 15-20 years ago, which was maybe the reason I read LH back in the days, Reddit was founded less than 18 years ago and even in those first few years had hardly any users, started using it maybe 11 years ago and even then it was quite empty

stopped reading LH already before starting with Reddit

petodo··on A New Beginning for LifeHacker
is there really any place for LH in times of Reddit subs like LPT and likes?

also used to read it like 15-20 years ago, but the content just didn't tell me anything new

petodo··on Ask HN: How many hours do you work on a daily basis?
Define working - is it actual work or sitting at computer on standby not getting paid for sitting?

Monday I did ~3 hours of actual (paid) work, yesterday ~2.5 hours, last Friday ~3.5 hours (though some of that at very slow pace waiting for slow server), I'm usually not paid by hours (besides those slow on server tasks).

I sit at my computer roughly between 8-15 on standby (minus usual lunch break walking those 8 meters to kitchen) unless I go to pick some paper at doctor, going to dentist tomorrow, etc.

Moving clocks surely Fcks my schedule twice a year, since my client is from country, which doesn't observe this European/Northamerican DST nonsense.

petodo··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
If you were using Android I would suggest just go for some mainstream model from Samsung (S series), Xiaomi (Mi X) or Pixel (basically any model) with pretty much guaranteed long term unofficial ROM updates even after official support cease if your problem were depreciated new app versions, but since you are voluntarily locked yourself to closed iOS, I have no suggestion other than stop updating apps and use the apps which were fine before. Btw. multitasking doesn't really work even on brand new iPhones.

For the record I am running gapps free Lineage with Android 8.1 on my phone from 2018 without any issues, I can hardly find app which would not run on 5 years old Android 8.1, if something (rarely) doesn't work it's because of relying on gapps.

petodo··on Ask HN: Would a global catastrophe unite or divide nations?
pretty sure they could just turn to solar, wind or water for energy (especially wind turbines or water dams can build even any developing country without kuch know how, let alone Japan, no need any rare resources from China for that) if they really wanted/needed to be self sufficient

same with food, it's just not worth for them right now, quite irelevant comparing status quo with situation where you want to be isolated not part of globalized system, just because now they import 60% food doesn't mean they need to import 60% of food

petodo··on Ask HN: Would a global catastrophe unite or divide nations?
that's by choice, if they wanted they can get isolated and be self sufficient with some minor compromises/inconveniences
petodo··on Ask HN: Would a global catastrophe unite or divide nations?
I don't really see benefit for countries like Japan, Australia or other isolated countries to join others.
