petodo··on “Takumi No Waza” – Japan's famous Green Bell Nail Clippers
maybe different beauty standards, from my life in China I remember men keeping fairly long nails before trimming them and many keep one fingernail like on pinky extra long to use as tool (you don't wanna know the most common use)

for me it's 2-2.5 weeks before it become uncomfortable to type on keyboard or use touch screen, dirtyness is not really an issue, just wash hands/nails properly (it probably helps to do office job from home instead manual labor)

petodo··on “Takumi No Waza” – Japan's famous Green Bell Nail Clippers
I've never understood how can people trim their nails with nail clipper compared to manicure scissors, I use one with fairly narrow and sharp tip so I can precisely follow curvature of fingernail which is especially handy for ring where I have almost 90 degree angles between top part and sides. Can you really trim already fairly short nails with clippers especially if they are curved a lot? I can see how they can work for fairly straight and long nails, but the whole mechanism seems too big to come really close to skin.

RIP Zippy, one of the best filehosters with great speed and no noticable limits between downloads

at least there is still Uptobox with very reasonable limits on free accounts (30mins between files and 30 seconds wait time + pretty big file size) and Mega (no waiting, but ~5GB per day)

petodo··on Ask HN: Has anyone here left the big city in pursue of a simpler life?
At least in US you have option becoming Amish, no such option in Europe really.

I'd seriously consider it, if I didn't have my own family, but if I didn't have my own family I would be possibly digital nomad travelling across Asia/South America...

petodo··on Reddit to vacate current headquarters and relocate
why would they care? just pay them by task/result, not by hour and you don't need to care how much and when they work if they fulfill deadlines
petodo··on Reddit to vacate current headquarters and relocate
why even bother wasting money on office space and not let everyone work from home?

petodo··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
I mean you can crush peanuts to powder and use however you want, just make sure to start with microscopic amounts and have strong anti-histamine at hand in case your kid is unlucky one like mine.
petodo··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
Yeah same here (Europe), never heard about anyone having (pea)nut allergy, but now my own kids have it (for the record wife also doesn't have it), and not just peanuts, other nuts as well (cashew, pistachio, walnuts). But from what I've seen in Prague kindergarten lists of allergic kids, it's still quite rare, like 1-2 kids max out of 20-24 kids class. Seems gluten allergy is more common than (pea)nuts.
petodo··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
Yeah, it doesn't seem to be hereditary, both me (European Caucasian) and my wife (Chinese Asian) have 0 problems with nuts and can crunch them as much we want (same with everyone in direct line), but both of our kids have very strong nut allergy (not just peanuts, also pistachios, walnuts and especially cashew nuts) with immediate swelling, whole body red, very dangerous, even just piece of peanut. Also interestingly son spent 1st year of life in China, while daughter was born in Europe and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Before I had kids I heard in Europe about peanut allergies only from US movies and TV shows and never met person who would be allergic to them, so was shocked to find my kids having such "made up" US allergy.

petodo··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
...if they survive your experiment in the first place.

Very dangerous advice, both of my kids have very strong reaction to nuts, even half nut is enough, so not sure when should I introduce them, interestingly both me and my wife like nuts and have no problems with them.

petodo··on Long Covid has had a brutal effect on the workforce, study finds
Yeah, I find interesting there is corelation between US recognizing very common cases of "long COVID" as well as "ADHD", while in most of the world these two things are never heard of besides when they watch US movies, it's almost as if they are made up diseases/disorders.
petodo··on Long Covid has had a brutal effect on the workforce, study finds
> I have a long history of depression and anxiety and ADHD.

So you basically confirmed this has nothing to do with COVID and there is no such thing as "Long COVID". Nobody denies whatever you feel, but trying to link it to COVID is just latching on buzz word.

It's interesting people with history of depression, anxiety and other mental issues are much more likely to report long COVID than people without such history , it's almost as their condition had nothing to do with COVID. And we can take it even further, prevalence of Long COVID with drugs/shrinks addicted US is much higher than anywhere else in world, while in most of the world they don't even hear about some "long COVID" cases, because people can't afford "long COVID" over there.

petodo··on Long Covid has had a brutal effect on the workforce, study finds
It doesn't, people can have mental issues even without COVID, you know there were people with mentail issues prior COVID and nobody denies it, just don't call it "long COVID" because it's now buzz word.
petodo··on Long Covid has had a brutal effect on the workforce, study finds
> > "More than a year after contracting the coronavirus, 18% of Long COVID patients had still not returned to work."

I wonder how fast would their long COVID disappear if their sick pay was cut immediately, miraclous cure! The reason why you don't see self employed people with "long COVID".

FTFY

Ordinary bread taste nothing like cake and it doesn't even look like that infamous squared sliced American/Anglo-Saxon sweet sponge.

petodo··on The American Diet Has a Sandwich Problem
bread I (and I guess most Europeans) eat has hardly any sugar in it and if it has, you can't feel it at all, you should really check how bread is made

petodo··on Catholic Group Spends Millions on Dating App Data to Out Gay Priests
I guess because pedo priest abusing altar boys makes for worse publicity than priest dating adult woman and it's double sin (since homosexuality ain't allowed besides sex outside marriage).
petodo··on 20hrs on a Qantas plane: the future of aviation or a fresh hell in economy?
I traveled 30+ hours journeys on train or bus, both usually non AC, bus even without toilet and I would take AC airplane with toilets anytime over these. You can walk in plane as much as in train, same narrow aisle, though with trains there is usually sleeper option for reasonable price (compared to plane) and leg space is usually a bit better even with seat vs seat.

But still 20 hours ain't really that much, not even a full day.

petodo··on Show HN: ChatGPT-i18n – Translate websites' locale json files with AI assistance
That's first time I hear someone would be praising Gtranslate, while they improved recently and they are catching up with DeepL, DeepL is still by far superior to GT, everything else is in completely different league (i don't have experience with ChstGPT). Btw. Reverso should be using same neural model as DeepL and provides also interesting results, though both DeepL and GT are superior to Reverso.
petodo··on Show HN: ChatGPT-i18n – Translate websites' locale json files with AI assistance
The problem is that one (ambiguous) term in English can cover more meanings or scenarios while in other language it may be required different words based on situation, for instance "lap" in swimming pool or stadium, heck even very basic "subscribe" can differ whether you are subscribing paid service or some free content in some languages, while in English you can easily use same word for both scenarios.

One would think TM and glossaries are the very basic requirements when requesting translation to update already existing translation, but I agree some companies don't provide these, which can cause inconsistencies when changing translator/company.
