petitmiam··on Creating my awesome Windows 10 dev setup
> The biggest issue for is that WSL2 is painfully slow accessing the local Windows file system.

This killed me after switching from WSL1 to WSL2. I missed the part in the notes where it said you should no longer store your files outside WSL. Finally figured it out eventually and the speed improvement was huge.

petitmiam··on Bitcoin: Magic Internet Money
Reader mode appears to only show the first half of the article.

Hardly ideal, but there is a pdf version of the full thing: https://www.researchaffiliates.com/content/dam/ra/documents/...

petitmiam··on How to beat LinkedIn: The Game
Same thing happened to me. When i contacted them about it, they claimed the emails were spam and not from them (despite the emails clearly mentioning contacts I had connected with!).

After numerous emails back and forth they eventually added to their "Do Not Contact" list. No emails since!

petitmiam··on Australians told to eat more kangaroo as population hits double that of humans
The price seems to have gone up considerably in the last 5 years. We used to eat kangaroo steaks and burgers regularly, but now we only consider it if it's on sale.
petitmiam··on Site requests bank logins for online purchases
> There is NO EXCUSE for using POLi vs. just paying with your bank

POLi is instant. Bank transfer is anywhere from 1 - 3 days. Until banks finally implement instant transfers, POLi will still be useful to some.

Pokemon Go won't be out for Christmas 2015. The release date just seems to be "2016" at this point.

petitmiam··on Windows 10 Free Upgrade Available in 190 Countries Today
An icon should be present on your Win7/8 task bar which lets you reserve a copy. It does seem to be a gradual rollout though, as mine still tells me it's not available yet.

It's probably quicker to download directly via The Windows 10 Download Tool: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

petitmiam··on Free (as in beer) Dynos
The updated help pages only mention the scenario of a worker dyno running along a web dyno.

https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/dyno-types#dyno-sleepi...

It's unclear what happens to apps which just have a single worker dyno. Are we meant to use the scheduler to kill workers for 6 hours a day?

Valve have at least been thinking about that problem for awhile. Back in 2011 they were planning for CS:GO to have cross-platform play between Xbox, PS3 and PC. However, the idea got ditched in 2012.
petitmiam··on Defective Heat Sinks Causing Garbage Gaming
>"In all cases the customer had said that the problem must be with our game because only our game was hitting these mysterious slowdowns."

This probably threw them off.

Thanks for the tip.

I added a security plugin last week. Since then, I've received one or two lockout emails per day. This morning I had 25.

petitmiam··on Free Must-Have “Security Engineering” Book
The pdf in your link has a section titled "Further Acknowledgments for the Second Edition", so I think it's safe to assume it's v2.
petitmiam··on How Valve hires, how it fires, and how much it pays
It's irritatingly slow starting up for me. Once it's going though, it's rock solid and fast enough.

Not sure about in the US, but here (Australia) you are only allowed to carry 1 lighter per person.

I remember this same type of question coming up before Windows XP came out. I wonder if it'd be something similar to this:

> "That said, Mega's also claims that their service saves room on its over-burdened servers by keeping a single copy of identical files How do they do that if they don't know their users' password? Good question. We don't know the answer."

Can anyone shed some light on how this might be possible, given the files are encrypted?

I first thought of Dr Philip Nitschke's 'Euthanasia Kit' when I read the headline.

petitmiam··on Unmanned drone buzzes French police car

> that, however, also makes the whole issue moot since the images are so small to be of little/no use in any commercial sense.

612x612 images as ads on instagram would make a whole lot of commercial sense.

petitmiam··on Who says splash pages have to be vertical? YouRad.io's horizontal splash page.
For me, the vertical scrollbar in my browser is a visual cue that I have the ability to scroll using the scroll-wheel.

If the news page hadn't explained that using the scroll-wheel will scroll the page horizontally, I wouldn't have known to try it.

Your comment caught my eye, because I usually hear population density being used to explain why Australia's internet isn't as good as elsewhere.

I'm certainly no expert on the topic, but I haven't heard any news about any major problems with Australia's roads. I'm curious to know how they compare with roads in the US.

USA density: 33.7/km2 87.4/sq mi population: ~ 314 mil

AUS density: 2.8/km2 7.3/sq mi population: ~ 22 mil

petitmiam··on Windows 8 Arrives
I hardly notice a difference between Vista post SP1 and Win 7.

Vista had teething problems early on which burnt a lot of people. Unfortunately, that's what seems to be stuck in everyone's minds.

petitmiam··on Facebook, I want my friends back
The 'friends' referred to in the article are the 53,000 facebook users who have 'liked' the Dangerous Minds blog on Facebook. The article also mentions the blog posts 10 - 16 times a day.
