peterzakin··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2020)
Macro Computer Club | Remote (Pacific-Eastern Time Zones) | www.usemacro.com

Macro helps operations teams define and automate their repeatable processes. We like to think of it as an IDE for Ops teams.

Macro Computer Club (www.usemacro.com) | Founding Frontend Eng | Founding Backend Eng

The super short pitch is we're trying to build an IDE for operations teams. The most interesting companies in the world are doing lots of heavy lifting in the background and managing all kinds of crazy ops. We're trying to figure out what the "IDE" looks like to make that work easier to design and deploy. We're still pretty early (just finished raising our pre-seed from South Park Commons and Index) so can be really generous on equity.

peterzakin··on Effective companies share – Inc is built for them
This is fantastic. Well done! One minor comment though... I'd like to hide links I'm no longer interested in, or at least mark some as read. I would get greater use from this with some inbox-like functionality--but that may not be the kind of product you want to build. </.02>
peterzakin··on Websites of SOPA-supporting congressmen redirect to Protest SOPA
ftr, I didn't do it. But I do think it's smirk-worthy. To each his own.
peterzakin··on Show HN: "Command Line" for the Social Web
Thanks! Yeah, this only has status updates working too--mostly I did this as a proof of concept that real applications can be built through Twitter.
peterzakin··on New Documentary Features Y Combinator-funded Wattvision
nice!
peterzakin··on Stross: Klout violates UK privacy laws.
"In the past I've fulminated about various social networking systems. The basic gist is this: the utility of a social network to any given user is proportional to the number of users it has"

This is a bit clumsy. If all of my friends are on a social network, it doesn't much matter who else is on it. The utility of a social network is proportional to the number of users I care about.

peterzakin··on Siri, Quora, And The Future Of Search
This is interesting, but I'm not sure if it's really saying anything more than: Quora, as a knowledge-store, can power mobile search. I say mobile search, since that seems to be the implication of his dream of a siri-quora collaboration.

But is knowledge extraction from Quora really so game-changing with respect to the mobile web? Don't get me wrong--I love Quora and I think it's an incredible knowledge resource online.

But I think the power of siri comes from real-time knowledge (that is, knowledge or information that is useful to us while we're on the go). My experience on Quora has been so much more about intelligent, high-quality content than about real-time, practical, in-the-moment information.

peterzakin··on TechCrunch Disrupt Champion Shaker Raises $15 Million
Could be a bet on timing. Maybe they think IMVU was ahead of its time...
peterzakin··on TechCrunch Disrupt Champion Shaker Raises $15 Million
I think the idea is that it could create an experience similar to Turntable in the sense that you can "socialize" with strangers in a safe way. Many of those strangers also may be famous or influential; there may be something valuable in an experience where you can virtually hang out with Mike Arrington.

It's cool having that kind of interaction on Twitter--and it's certainly more "human" on Turntable since you're all engaged in a common activity that occurs in real-time: listening to music. Unfortunately for Shaker (or so I predict) virtually hanging out (apologies for the oversimplification) is hardly the same thing as listening to music with other people. This sounds like a bet on a trend...

peterzakin··on 25% of Yale goes to Consulting, Finance
I think you're stereotyping too strongly here. The difference in character between Princeton and Yale is marginal.
peterzakin··on 25% of Yale goes to Consulting, Finance
haha. I don't think it's that high. But I do think it's higher than 25%.
peterzakin··on Fridge is Joining Google+ Team
Congrats, guys!
peterzakin··on Google Circles is high work and low return
Begs the question: are circles valuable?

I think that people are actually taking the time to organize their circles. You almost have to be a google+ anarchist to not organize your circles. But are people actually using circles?

The only time that I use circles is when i want to filter my stream, which is useful, though not reason to call google+ a game changer. Now, what will be interesting to see is how i will use circles when i start uploading photos to google+. If i only share with the few people i'm putting in my friends circle, that could be damaging to facebook. That could be a game-changer.

Also, fwiw, I'm using Google+ publicly right now, kind of like a long-form twitter.

peterzakin··on Google Circles is high work and low return
It would probably be too much work if "circling" were done after following a person, but since circling is merely part of the process of following someone, it doesn't seem like that much of a burden.
peterzakin··on Ask HN: Recovering a stolen laptop
ah well here he is. though who knows how accurate this is (or if the police will even follow up with it):

peterzakin··on Happy claim chowder for DaringFireball's Gruber
It's not practical to write an essay on an iPad. Edit: without an external keyboard.
peterzakin··on Happy claim chowder for DaringFireball's Gruber
We're "post pc" when it comes to multimedia, but not for anything that requires a keyboard, e.g. word processing etc.... That's a big deal, no doubt, but until we move past our reliance on the keyboard for some essential applications, we're not post-pc.

Granted, we're probably headed in that direction.

peterzakin··on AdGrok is joining Twitter
congrats!
peterzakin··on Why Color is overrated
The privacy problem is not going to be what kills Color. Having a privacy problem to solve likely presupposes that they've been successful.
peterzakin··on Ask HN: Can anyone recommend some philosophy reading?
The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus is extremely readable and a classic of modern nihilistic thought.

I'd also recommend Nietzsche's The Genealogy of Morals. It's not his most famous work, but it's pretty widely acclaimed as his best.

peterzakin··on Show HN: a social site designed to manage multiple groups
Design is very sleek. I question though why "add friends" is located on the top nav bar; seems better suited to the side panel.

peterzakin··on Ask HN: How to foster hacker culture at my school (Cornell)?
Princeton's the same way. Tremendous amount of engineering talent and we even benefit from relative proximity to New York, and yet the prevailing campus culture pushes students towards finance and consulting.

How can that culture change? I can't say for sure, but my hypothesis is that a hacker culture already exists at Princeton; it's just hidden and untapped. At the very least these two things could help a university with an untapped hacker culture:

1. a hacker house, or at least some defined space to code along like-minded kids, even if that is nothing more than a dorm room.

2. student-driven cs curriculum. Princeton's CS program like Cornell's (i'm taking your word for it) is heavily theory based. There is i believe only one course on web development. In other departments, students not infrequently campaign for new classes. I wonder what effect an iphone development class (for the sake of an example) would have on the campus culture?

peterzakin··on Ask HN: where are the UI designers in HN?
