Fascinating discussion.
peterfield··on Creative AI Sydney takes place from 18 to 19 August 2022 online and in Sydney
#CreativeAI is the epitome of exponential technology. Not only because of the level of details and overall quality of the images from 2022 Dall-E, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion (compared with 2021 AI-images), but also, and maybe more importantly, because the creative processes involved are now accessible to anyone with an internet connection (and a few buck to spend if they want to create more than a handful of images).

Learn more tomorrow and Friday at #CreativeAI_Sydney. With UNSW NVIDIA AI Canva CSIRO Spotify Diapason Consulting and more.

peterfield··on The Reluctant Prophet of Effective Altruism
"MacAskill, however, could find nothing wrong with it." "When he met friends at the pub, he ordered only a glass of water, which he then refilled with a can of two-per-cent lager he’d bought on the corner"

Well, in the second case he could not find anything wrong with his own behavior (using deceit to defraud the pub owner of using his facility), so I won't put much value in his first finding or lack thereof.

peterfield··on A Framework for Engineering Managers
Interesting. That said, the word "risk" is missing. Fundamental aspect of tech/project/program management - IMHO a good framework should include that!
peterfield··on Why falling birthrates might be a bigger deal than dominants narratives imply
Agreed it looks very well put together - but I'm a bit turned down by the lack of clear authorship information ;(
peterfield··on Show HN: I made some ambient music generators that run in your browser
I work in medical device regulations. The way ADHD appeared is clearly not a claim, and there is not regulatory concern of any sort here in any jurisdiction I could think of.

That said - regardless of regulations, you don't want to confuse your users, so better leave this acronym out indeed.

Cheers. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/356595076_Music_tec...

peterfield··on I analyzed hospital price lists so you didn't have to
Great stuff thanks a lot
peterfield··on It's quite hard to lose a Duolingo streak
Had a somehow similar experience with Strava. I am biking these days only to commute - so doing the same boring 15km urban route 2, 4 or 6 times a week (Returns). Each time my performance would be driven by the weather, my load (public library books weight a ton), fatigue state after a long word day or a poor night, traffic, roadwork etc...not by my training consistency or motivation. Yet the app would keep notifying me of new records beaten each time to keep me engaged by shortening time after time the distances measured, resorting down to timing every single "one block long" segment between traffic lights, stop signs or various landmarks to find new records to beat :(

"your best time is now 41sec (instead of 42 2 years earlier)" -> that's when I stopped completely using it.

peterfield··on Microsoft Purview: Additional classifiers for Communication Compliance (preview)
"The leavers classifier detects messages that explicitly express intent to leave the organization, which is an early signal that may put the organization at risk of malicious or inadvertent data exfiltration upon departure". In other words "how to promote and encourage paranoid behaviors from employers" :(

Great tool - it even shaved 4 years of my thinkpad :) https://i.imgur.com/HdRVr5i.png
peterfield··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
I work as an independent consultant. Few months ago, just starting, one prospective client (through their CFO/COO suggested is shaved 33% of my quoted daily rate. I offered a $50 discount instead on the daily rate because i had heard the CEO on a podcast and I was interested to learn more about their company. We verbally agreed on a daily rate and a weekly 1 day commitment. At week 5 client tells me they'll pay only 2 of the almost 4 days I had done already cause "they thought the report after the 2 first days was all what was due" BS :(.

1. I should have seen it coming - entitled dude took on himself to get the 33% discount he thought he deserved. 2. It sucked. I spent some time since writing some agreement template and will slowly roll them out with new clients.

peterfield··on Cooklang – Managing Recipes in Git
Yep. It also boils out the 15-20% water content of butter to make it closer to 100% fat. Once you remove these (water + proteins and other impurities) the smoke point is much higher and it is much healthier for hot cooking. It is called "ghee" when done at medium high temp, which gives it a slightly darker colour and nuttier taste (Indian way I think), and just called "clarified butter" when done at low temp. Other advantage when done properly -> it does not go "off" anymore and does not need to be kept in the fridge, so you have this much easier/softer substance that you can spoon out of a jar.

You can even use it for deep frying - honestly the best fat for it.

To my knowledge the second is still a metric system unit, not a "SW engineering geek system unit". Wikipedia agrees https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanosecond
peterfield··on Yerka bike uses frame as lock
Do you think the kind of people who steal bikes are smart, rationale and business savvy? That they are educated about this very brand of bike?

I've lived on 3 continents, and one of the sad common denominators is the stupidity and lack of respect for the values of things from low-life burglars. Music instruments thieves and bike thieves are the worst.

Sadly, there is one quality they often share and that is persistence.

peterfield··on Cooklang – Managing Recipes in Git
THX mate - my comment was just a attempt at a funny critic LOL. I actually grew up in a restaurant in France :)
peterfield··on Cooklang – Managing Recipes in Git
I followed the recipe to the letter. I've flipped the steak a few times already and I'm still waiting for it to brown. The butter is not melted either.

Not really surprising considering the pan is cold :(

Even with a hot pan, I would have put the butter first, not after the steak.

Not impressed at all. If any of these tubes is aluminum (I'm 90% sure the seat down tube is), a battery powered grinder can cut through it in less than 1 min. Even a handsaw would need only a few minutes.
peterfield··on How does perspective work in pictures?
I think this illusion is based on the same effect: https://www.reddit.com/r/blackmagicfuckery/comments/t5xwts/f...
peterfield··on How “latency numbers everybody should know” decreased from 1990–2020
Complete laggard questions: * Did SSD exist in 1993? * Why using an "approximately equal" sign (as opposed to a real = sign) between e.g. 1000ns and 1 micros ? (I would undersatnd between binary and decimal multiples of bytes...but decimal fractions of seconds don't work this way)

peterfield··on Cannabis use produces persistent cognitive impairments: meta review

+1 for TRIZ. "Industrial" is maybe a tad too restrictive word though
peterfield··on I went back to using a ThinkPad from 2012
Love my X220, although it has been really struggling lately. Chromium, Opera, Brave or Firefox all cause my CPU/fan to crank up as soon as I have a couple of tabs open :(
peterfield··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed things you've ever used?
