petargyurov··on Tell HN: YouTube's web UI just got even worse
Am I the only one who uses YouTube like this:

* Only go on the Subscriptions page; I've never once visited the "Home" page

* Blocked the Recommended Videos sidebar using uBlock

* Use SponsorBlock

* Use uBO filters to remove Shorts from Subscriptions page

I come to watch what I want, not get all the clickbait on the side.

petargyurov··on Show HN: I 3D scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza
That is insanely cool.

The dollhouse view is nice. It would be great if you could see a 2D schematic of where you are in the pyramid as you're exploring.

Incredible job!

petargyurov··on Ask HN: What not-profit-seeking project are you tinkering with this week?
On (some) weekends I work on Megadetector GUI [0]. Megadetector [1] is an object detection model trained on millions of camera trap images and is widely used by conservationists. The issue is that it's rather technical to set up, so I made a GUI for it.

Currently working on a brand new version (not public just yet) that will use the latest MD version (v5 is way faster), better UI and most importantly GPU support out of the box.

petargyurov··on Ask HN: Any extension or script that lets you tag HN users?
Wow, amazing! Thank you!

The tooltip that pops up can be quite off sometimes in terms of position, but otherwise it seems to work really well!

You should do a Show HN for sure!

EDIT: you're now tagged as "tag-legend"

petargyurov··on Cairo: Alternative Windows Desktop
Apart from the main desktop overhaul, does this bring a consistent UI across all Windows elements?

Windows already suffers from 3 (?) different UI styles; does this fix that or add to the problem?

petargyurov··on Deployment and infrastructure for a bootstrapped webapp with 150k monthly visits
Thanks. I thought it would be something... smarter. Not sure I like that, seems to come with a lot of caveats.
petargyurov··on Deployment and infrastructure for a bootstrapped webapp with 150k monthly visits
> The trick is to separate the deployment of schema changes from application upgrades. So first apply a database refactoring to change the schema to support both the new and old version of the application

How do you deploy a schema that serves both old and new versions? Anyone got any resources on this?

petargyurov··on Exploiting GPT-3 prompts that order the model to ignore previous directions
I recently played around with GPT-3, trying to teach it to create interesting DALL-E prompts [0] and I came across a lot of similarly silly behaviour.

Sometimes simple instructions like injecting/storing/replacing parts of a sentence with something else were completely ignored, or failed at. Also I found GPT has the tendency to get stuck in loops... and has a weird obsession with women.

There was an article posted here recently where someone taught it how to hack a payphone (in theory) which shows how good it can be, but it is somewhat like teaching a young child sometimes.

petargyurov··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
Though I didn't get banned, I had a similar experience with Airbnb recently.

Booked a hotel. When we got there, it was abandoned! Host unresponsive. Clearly a scam. Reported it to Airbnb, and after some back and forth we got our money back (pretty quickly tbf). We naturally left a bad review, warning others.

But then the host left us a bad review, despite never even meeting us or interacting with us in any way! We complained to Airbnb and of course, they "saw nothing that violates their review policy"... Diabolical.

I am sure that that listing is probably still up.

petargyurov··on Ask HN: Are you hiking? How old are you and how many kilometers can you Hike?
Quite impressive for a 3 year old.
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
I fell in love with the first book and wholeheartedly recommend the entire series. It's great.
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Holy crap, that's beautiful and way better than mine! Any idea how they made it?
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Nice! Yeah, the images are manually added in; in fact, all of the book's metadata is.
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
I really like the vertical timeline. Lots of stats and charts, great stuff :)
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Oh I really like that. Thanks for sharing!
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Haven't heard of LazyLibrarian, but I've licensed this with "Unlicense" so it's effectively free to use for all purposes. Perhaps the authors of LazyLibrarian can use it in some way?
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Thank you!

I suppose Goodreads or Oku fill that space?

I wanted something a little... visual, hence why I made this instead of using those services myself (also I wanted to learn about CSS transforms).

Since this plugs easily into Jekyll, I have structured it such that each book entry is kind of like an empty blog post. The plan is to enter my notes or review in the .md file for each book and display that somehow.

petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
I get your point, but like I said, I didn't have the habit.
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
Very cool! I like that you can use labels on issues as tags. Neat project.
petargyurov··on I made a virtual bookshelf
I've been thinking about something very similar too but given the challenges I opted for this approach... for now.
petargyurov··on Show HN: My Virtual Bookshelf
Thanks. Oku looks cool, love the slick website. Will give it a go!
petargyurov··on Show HN: My Virtual Bookshelf
Thanks, will update that link.

That's exactly my next goal. Each book entry here is actually backed with a .md file that is currently empty. My plan is to write my reviews/notes there and display them when you click on a book.

I don't use Goodreads and haven't heard of Oku. Not sure why I don't use them really. The motivation here was mostly to learn some CSS.

petargyurov··on Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones
I read the book not too long ago. The only thing that truly stuck with me is:

- Habit stacking: want to form a new habit? Stick it on the end of an existing one. Works really well.

It's a decent book and worth the read IMO.

petargyurov··on The ‘psychobiome': the gut bacteria that may alter how you think, feel, act
I am surprised the article didn't touch at all on foods that are purported/reported to be GABA producers, specifically fermented foods.
petargyurov··on Ask HN: Hybrid/Remote software team rituals
These probably aren't that unexpected or unusual but here:

* We have a monthly book club

* Every Friday afternoon we have an optional wrap-up call to just casually chat before signing off for the weekend

petargyurov··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get for development?
I am aware of System 76, but I am not sure their hardware offerings are good value for money. I could be wrong, but that's why I'm asking this question!
petargyurov··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
> Slovio es idealju jazika dla dnesju ludis.

I think this means "Slovio is the ideal language for/of everyday/today's people"

"ludis" is 100% "people". Not sure what "dla" and "dnesju" mean. In Bulgarian, "dnes" (днес) means "today" so that's where I'm coming from.

petargyurov··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
You're right.

You see, after not having much of an outlet for my Bulgarian in the past ~18 years I have forgotten some words!

petargyurov··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
As a Bulgarian speaker I was surprised that I could understand the entirety of this (though I assumed "лудис" means "people"; something I learned from listening to the Ukranian president's speech a few days ago)

> Новйу межународйу йазика! Што ес Словио? Словио ес новйу межународйу йазика ктор разумийут чтирсто милион лудис на целойу земла. Словио можете употребит дла гворение со чтирсто милион славйу Лудис от Прага до Владивосток; от Санкт Петербург через Варшава до Варна; от Средземйу Морие и от Северйу Морие до Тихйу Океан. Словио имайт простйу, логикйу граматиа и Словио ес идеалйу йазика дла днесйу лудис. Учийте Словио тпер!

Pretty cool.

petargyurov··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
BitWarden ticks all of the features you need.

I am not sure about all the nice-to-haves you have listed but it definitely supports your last point.
