personalidea··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
They own Pedigree (dog food) and Whiskas (cat food). So there is a connection to pet care there.

On a side note, they also sponsor projects to help with and care for feral cats and stray dogs in Mexico.

There might be some decent people with good intentions at those companies, but it all seems like some white vest marketing to me.

And any pet owner will confirm that veterinarians make good money. So for MARS to get into that market seems like a smart move.

Last time I checked (2019ish) it wasn’t possible. The times they are a changing, I guess.

Will check it out again.

Yeah, pot is a great way to discover music.

personalidea··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
It has practical implications. I have a file cabinet which is made for A4 paper in landscape. Now, I have some official paperwork from another country that has more the form of a spell scroll and the only way to fit that into my cabinet or binder or wherever is to fold it.

Which is something I would like to avoid on things like birth certificates and such.

Joplin has no mobile writer. Only reading.

Obsidian has that. And is more extendable. That is why I switched.

For me, writing a note on multiple devices is the key feature.

> We will never again have another private thought, another uninterrupted conversation, eye contact, feeling someones hands as you tell them how much their being means to you.

I disagree. It is just that these now need a conscious decision from us. My thoughts are still private until I choose to publish them. My conversations are only interrupted if I allow them to be. We make eye contact when we decide to. The intimate moments with my partner are there when we create them.

True, it’s easy to loose that and growing up today, you need someone to show you that it can be done. Which is why I agree that we stand to loose that, but we are not there yet.

personalidea··on Is the internet killing the nude beach?
Okay, true. But which employer is going to use this to check up on new hires?
personalidea··on Find Meaning at Work
It really is a question of preference. Kids are awesome, but that is not to say that one can’t be happy without them. I firmly believe that no one should have kids if they don’t really want to. There are enough of us. We will need to reproduce, but not everyone has to. Contraceptives are a blessing and they should be freely available to anyone that wants them.

I find it difficult to put this in a precise statement.

At the same time, for me, kids and a partner who wouldn’t take my BS, where the push for me to get my stuff together. Otherwise I might have been one of those cardiacs arrest cases due to drug overuse.

That’s why I’m happily living with a family.

So, after getting sober at the end of my twenties, cleaning up things in my thirties (getting stable employment as a self taught, career changing web dev) and stopping to be a product of circumstances (thanks therapy) and my kids being old enough to have deeper conversations with (they are in the middle of their school age) I am now looking forward to actively design and realize the life I am living.

There is a great essay/story by David Sedaris on his experiences on a nude camp site.

personalidea··on Is the internet killing the nude beach?
But that somebody would need to somehow connect that image with my name.

I mean one thing is taking nude selfies and then posting them on my IG or whatever and the other is random stranger snapping pictures from far away. How would the latter turn up when someone is looking for me? Face recognition? Possible, but I don’t think we’re there yet, or?

personalidea··on Find Meaning at Work
As a father of two, I would like to add that even with kids, your 30s can be a golden-age. They were for me at least.

The stress and FOMO of my twenties was gone. A certain Danny Glover quote regularly comes to mind.

Things and thoughts in my head are for the most part sorted out and now it’s time to play.

Sure, it’s different with certain responsibilities, but in the end you are yourself either way. The main point of your post, as I understood and agree with is true with it without kids. Because, as you said, success is measured in effort, not in lines of code or numbers on your watch.

We should be competing WITH each other, not AGAINST.

Now, I’m done with my thirties and the platinum age of my forties is dawning. Can’t wait.

personalidea··on Ask HN: How to Finish Projects?
While I agree with you, I want to be nit picky here for a second.

It’s true that a product is never finished, there is always something else to add or take away. A project should have a definition of done, there should be a clearly defined point at which the project is finished. Some measurable points that once you reach them, you can say it’s over.

Absolutely agree. Just watched the first five minutes of that clip you linked and I 100% agree. Jonathan is an inspiring person that had a huge impact on my personal trajectory.

If you want to be a top notch programmer/artist/craftsman, you need to put in the hours.

I had to come to terms with this when I realized that I was not going to be a famous musician, because I didn’t put in the hours.

Now that I have kids, my priorities shifted and I want to put in the hours with my kids. Which means, I won’t put them into anything else. And I am mostly fine with that.

If someone else chooses differently, that’s their choice to make. With the accompanying consequences.

If you want to put in 60-80 hours a week into your work, that means that you won’t spend those 60-80 hours with your kids.

You might end up in history books, but that might mean you didn’t celebrate your kids scoring their first goal along the way.

Take your pick.

personalidea··on Ask HN: How do you balance having kids and improving your skills?
Well, suck it up. This is part of being a parent. You now have to learn a new skill. Being a guardian. Guiding and coaching a human being. Helping them up when they fall down, celebrate their wins. Accompany them in growing up into being a decent adult. That’s not an easy thing to do. You will want to cry and rip your hair out watching them struggle. If you are invested in them and really care. Or you skip that, go off to work and in a couple of years they are out of the house and you won’t have to see them again.

I know this is coming across very harsh and your reality most likely falls somewhere on the spectrum, but I am serious. Your time with your child is not coming back. Every day is a day with something they do for the first time and with some they do for the last time. I hope you take naps with them. It’s the one thing I miss the most.

Remember, nobody ever said on their death bed: I wish I had worked more.

Work will still be there when your kid grows up. And they will, faster then you’ll want them to.

I cope with this by shifting my priorities. I’m a husband first, father second and then some other things, one of them being an employee.

My private time is spend with private things and I have an employer who understands learning is part of the job description, so I am learning on company time.

And I work in a company that is living a culture of “together” instead of some kind of competition.

I have a clear defined career path within my company that I can advance at my own pace.

Of course, since I am not coding 12 hours a day, I don’t expect to ever win a coding Oscar. Good thing, there is none.

personalidea··on Ask HN: How do you balance having kids and improving your skills?
I managed to self teach myself web dev like that. Get up at 4:30 to study. Around 7 make kids ready for the day. Go to work and in bed at 22:00. Rinse and repeat until I was able to break out of mind numbing drone work into my first web dev role.
personalidea··on Ask HN: How do you balance having kids and improving your skills?
Might be a cultural thing, but I wouldn’t want to work where I have to compete with colleagues like it’s some kind of Gladiator type of gig.
personalidea··on John Carmack on avoiding distractions
It’s all fine and dandy until you have things to get done for kids and family. Dinner is a time sensitive topic.

But I agree with the sentiment of creating urgency in sizable chunks. Good read, thanks.

personalidea··on Ask HN: Will AI-generated images flooding the web pollute future training data?
Yes, that is what happens when big music takes an interest and everything is flooded. Same with beat, rock, punk, new wave, you name it. HipHop is alive and well, just need to know where to look.

Personally, the best advice (for me) on picking a career came from Hunter S Thompson:

Decide what kind of life you want to live, then find a job that supports that.

personalidea··on Adventure game graphics with DALL-E 2
I’ve been on the beta testing for Stable Diffusion and one thing that they have is give you the seed of the image with which the space is populated. What this enables is enabling you to tweak the image, as you can keep the ‚base‘ image and iterate on the prompt.

It’s not as sophisticated as you described, yet, but close.

In addition I can imagine that it is a matter of the training set. As of now, the AIs seem like jack-of-all-trades, so they know a bit of a lot of different styles and topics. But with Stable Diffusion being able to run locally, you could specialize it by training it with high detail on, let’s say, landscape photography. So then one might be able to direct the AI more precisely.

personalidea··on The AI Art Apocalypse
Exactly. Which is why Vinyl sales have grown, because of the digital abundance analog scarcity is attractive.

This whole debate reminds me of the early aughts, when digital music was said to kill all music. I predict a similar development here too.

Human graphic artists will adapt and the next generation will incorporate AI generated images into their tool kit.

personalidea··on I will now send this to beginner programmers
Actually, there is a framework used in education. I learned about it when teaching foreign languages.

It is about how to structure a unit about any given topic:

1. Presentation/ Introduction to the topic with examples 2. Explanation 3. Verification that topic was understood in theory 4. Practice with isolated exercises 5. Transfer new knowledge to personal context

So lectures, articles and such can serve as an introduction to a topic. Step 3 is difficult when learning on your own. I would suggest the Feynman method here. If you can explain it, you understood.

Then look for exercises. Tutorials are great here. Try to solve it on your own, then look at the (possible) solution.

Then lastly, go and using it in your own context, outside of a tutorial, will solidify your knowledge.

personalidea··on Run your own DALL-E-like image generator
And having spend the last 24 hours in their beta testing phase, I can only say. It blows Dall-E and MidJourney out of the water.

They give you the seeds, that are used to populate the images, so you can fine tweak an image by adjusting slight details in a prompt. It is really awesome.
