persona··on Gogo injects false SSL certificates for google.com domains
Correct! I've checked and it's also doing it for Vimeo, DailyMotion and probably other video sites.
persona··on Show HN: Bibleqs - Dynamic shareable images with quotes
Playing with multi-device, full-screen images, web fonts and social-media embedding options. Static image is generated only when shared. New image on every refresh.

Still need to add more options, fonts, images.

persona··on Cloud Platform at Google I/O – new Big Data, Mobile and Monitoring products
Google Dataflow seems to be the big one here specially if it works well for stream processing. Fault-tolerant stream processing with huge scalability? Perfect for the IoT!
persona··on Elites embrace “do what you love” mantra. But it devalues work & hurts workers
The author starts it right: “Do what you love. Love what you do.” Just to build an entire case on half-the-thought: DWYL... I've read the comments and that first part (DWYL) is practically the only thing people are discussing, but I believe it loses the bigger picture. DWYL. LWYD. - Both things make it balanced. It's not only about DWYL. When you have to do something else, you need a conscious effort and purpose to LWYD.

I've read some years back (can't remember the name of the book) written by a chinese talking about his father that was a locksmith and got a job as street sweeper. He faced it with an intent. He'd be the best street sweeper in China. He would love the streets assigned under his care. That is the LWYD. That takes commitment and guts. But when you LWYD, you also DWYL.

persona··on Ask HN: Killer idea, no cash to build an MVP, what to do?
Being the only one can also mean there is no market... like being the only company to offer flood insurance on the Sahara...
persona··on Ask HN: How can my girlfriend get plugged into a startup?
I believe it would be easier for someone to reply if she (you) can identify at least some areas she can be of value, has any type of experience or even interest alone. Usually startups are about optimizing value each one adds to the total. For some ideas of areas/skills she could be helpful look this post from today: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5210184 Not that she (or someone else even) has to master all items listed there, but shows what some startups may be looking for (or need help with).
persona··on I’m Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. AMA
The original post is from over an hour but answers should start now: "I’ll be answering your questions live, starting at 10:45 am PST"
persona··on Apollo Robbins Demonstrates the Art of Pickpocketing [video]
Have a "honeypot". Just carry an empty (or with unimportant things) on your back pocket as always and a small money-clip on your front one. If someone gets it - no problem. It's better than "surprising" the thief on the spot because things can get worse from there.
persona··on What is the best way to invest $870?
By defining what "best" means first.

Higher return? Lower risk? Long or short term? You can buy a lot of books with that and it could be (if you read it) the "best" investment.

persona··on Square introduces monthly pricing
It won't be worth the trouble as you'd have that amount reported as income to the IRS http://help.squareup.com/customer/portal/articles/21709-does...
persona··on Square introduces monthly pricing
Maximum savings for a business is capped at $3,575/yr and if they sell less than $120k/yr, businesses will actually be losing money.

It sounds more like a safe customer acquisition strategy for Square (with acquisition cost maxed at that value) then a huge savings for small businesses (min swipe cost would be at 1.32% compared to 2.75%).

persona··on It's Insanely Hard to Make a Kick-Ass iPhone App
As he talks about the marketing problem for small players, I've just posted an Ask HN survey for Mobile Game Developers to get some feedback on something I've been working on to help small players. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3334832
persona··on The Hellish World of Self Promotion for the Indie Game Developer
I've been thinking on this subject for a while - and working on something to new ways of promoting a game. Just posted an Ask HN survey to get a sense on the need for that: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3334832

persona··on I'm a serial over committer
have you tried "selling the idea" to someone else? Perhaps someone that wants to learn to code, or work with design, or write - depending on the type of project, even small ones, its good to energize someone to try it than to drop it.

A shared success is better than no success.

persona··on I'm a serial over committer
There is a cost in overcommitting as there is the opportunity cost. But I believe there is a way to overcommit with the "under commit, over deliver" line of thought. That will allow you to still look at the new opportunities and present an option ("sure - let's talk first"..."could get done by xx".."too late? well next time perhaps").

One thing I've found - while handling many side-projects is to know each one has a priority based on how much I'm invested in one of them and the benefits that one will bring. If you have the priorities set upfront, it'll be easier to make decisions in case something gotta give. But if you "under commit" to a lot of different commitments, you'd still have some space :)

persona··on Bitcasa: Infinite Storage (really?)
maybe :) they announced it at $10/mo.
persona··on Ask HN: Block based cloud storage application. Promising - or not?

persona··on Show HN: runens - iphone app for social running

persona··on Show HN: Our iPad app for music notation & composition
Have ben looking for that! The visual at least looks great. [EDIT: my bad - just saw the Promo codes.. thanks! ]

Today though I compose mostly playing so a MIDI interface in the future would be killer! :)

persona··on Why I eat alone and probably you should too
if the topics are constrained to the examples the author presented, then it might be better to save the 30min. At the same time, a big part of innovation relates on communicating ideas and comes from day-to-day interactions especially with people from different background/experiences. That is a block the author is imposing on himself by isolating - if there are others great minds at his/her workplace. perhaps finding a different group of people to have lunch with would increase the learning process and also giving space for cross-pollination of ideas.
persona··on Ask HN: App Pricing?
The key question is what is the benefit of Salesfolio compared to other available solutions that seems to do most of the same. For example, https://www.dropbox.com/ipad They charge 9.99/mo for 50GB.

Or a Memeo Connect Reader tied to Google Docs (document sharing being done in Google Docs)

This will help identify some pricing models currently in practice.
