peppermint_tea··on Send a text message about Ukraine to a random Russian mobile number
Should we also start spamming US phones about Yemeni kids? : yes

I don't understand what purpose this kind of spamming serves : there is a crackdown on information in Russia, to take back your example, you know about the Yemeni kids because you are free to access this information

peppermint_tea··on Russian IT workers sign a petition against the war (in Russian)
I think you are spot on, just to add to this, I understand why the Ukrainian military does not want to fight outside the cities, It would make them open target for Russian shelling. and the imbalance in forces would probably become more obvious.
peppermint_tea··on Bypass Paywalls: a browser extension to help bypass paywalls for selected sites
I dont think bypassing paywall is the right way to go about this, I am thinking about a paid news source aggregator where you could select the news source you want and pay accordingly. Information cost money to gather afterall...

of course, it involves partership with a lot of different news outlets, but if it takes off, nobody would want to be left out of it... (rss/atom format? :) )

if anyone is interrested to start this, get in touch with me.

personally, I pay lemonde.fr and that's it, I read al-jazeera a lot for free too, I should pay...

it is fine, Biden said all of this will be fixed in the union speech. Like Trudeau in Canada, he says all the right thing, hard to disagree with him... let's see if the action will follow the words. Personally, I am disillusioned with all of this mess, NATO just pushing forward for decades, now we are in this mess and the ukranian people will be used as "chair à canon" and the russian people will be broke to an extent hard to conceive, even for the low tier of poor american people, which I am also sympathetic too. what a mess.

peppermint_tea··on I'm a digital nomad. Should I renounce my US citizenship?
Unsure, I am not from the U.S, but I tought maybe you can get back to the country for treatment...
peppermint_tea··on I'm a digital nomad. Should I renounce my US citizenship?
The article fails to mention on which passport he travels which is quite relevant. The other passport you own will be linked to another country, financial system... and taxes.

not a very good article, without comparing U.S vs another country tax system/medicare pros and cons, it is impossible to make an enlightened decision, therefore making the title of this article irrelevant.

we would need one article per country vs the U.S for this to be informative imo.

peppermint_tea··on Russia Has Illegally Gained UN Security Council Seat. It Should Be Fixed
"Article 4 of the Charter states that any peaceful state can become a member of the UN. Being peaceful is a requirement."

we should probably remove a couple of countries from the UN

peppermint_tea··on Accounts to Support Ukrainian Army Directly via Bank of Ukraine
yup, the "proofs" seems even weaker than the false WMD for invading iraq
peppermint_tea··on Accounts to Support Ukrainian Army Directly via Bank of Ukraine
Although I understand the rationale for people that do not want to give to an army, I would say in this specific case (no_army == no_country)
peppermint_tea··on In praise of the European drying rack (2017)
from a north american now in europe that lives in a 2 room apartment and hangs his blankets weekly on the curtain pole (rack to small, no space) no... just no.
peppermint_tea··on See how DMARC, SPF, and DKIM work interactively
spf : the receiving server can check (in a public dns record) which server is allowed to send for this domain

dkim : the email is signed (using a private key) with a unique signature, the receiving server can validate the DKIM signature by running a DNS query to search for the public key for that domain .

dmarc : publish a policy on how emails that does not satisfy the above condition above (spf & dkim) should be handled (quarantine, reject) and optionally sends you a report on who send/tried to send emails on the behalf of your domain

Edit : I misread your question... it is odd indeed that only satisfying one condition is enough for a pass...

peppermint_tea··on See how DMARC, SPF, and DKIM work interactively
no need to... but it is not that hard to implement...
peppermint_tea··on See how DMARC, SPF, and DKIM work interactively
people cannot send spoofed emails with my domain. I'm just an enthusiastic running his mail server so no big gain. But I can see why $BIG_BANK would like to prevent people to be able send fishing email from accounts@$BIG_BANK.com from random computers on the internet...
peppermint_tea··on See how DMARC, SPF, and DKIM work interactively
best tester I found so far... very detailed, explains interactively what it is doing and gives you the RFC number... was in the process of migrating my mail server, and it reminded me about my spf record :)

well done and keep the good work.

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: Who wants to help promote RSS?
I am 100% in on this, I use rss notification on my website (temporary.chat) to notify users of new messages, the code is open source, perhaps it can be used as an easy platform to diffuse content via rss (works for images too)

peppermint_tea··on No Way to Grow Up
vaccination sure present a risk. so does a covid infection, they are both negligible in terms of odds but both real.

> They really didn’t want to push vaccines on children

who is "they" because when I read guidance from several countries, it does recommend the vaccine in age group 5-11

peppermint_tea··on No Way to Grow Up
You have a good point, but I also think it will take more time to get the full picture of long covid in children (number affected, symptoms etc).

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4...

Because of the lack of data, it seems like I am running an experiment on my child either way :

- if I send her to school where she will most likely catch covid (1st generation of kids to catch covid at a young age)

- by getting a vaccine studied on such a small test group and short period of time (1st generation of kids get this vaccine at a young age)

I am on the vaccine side but my ex is not.

sorry for the rant(ish) reply, it is a sensitive personal topic and just needed to lay my thoughts bare I guess

P.S : vaccine not available for child in her age group where she lives

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: How did you move on from past experiences?
No depression but former gambler here... Gambling is a quick reward (produced by) and for the brain, even when you loose. It is not always about money. This video is the closest thing I found to properly explained what was going on :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNWz8rcQtSI&feature=related (non-gamblers may look at this video and not understand at all)

you are probably smart, know the odds are against you, but like any other drug, want/need that quick fix. I am no brain scientist, but I would guess that the drug induced gambling manage to mask your depression temporarily... but the down after a loss makes you go even lower.

I managed to quit gambling when I realized that what I had to loose (in life) was greater than any chance of winning. So think about the things that are already making you a winner, find some other drug inducing activity less nefarious (but also less rewarding) (exercice, coding whatever) and do not hesitate to see a psychologist and perhaps meds if needed.

I would tell you you can message me privately, but did not figured how to do that on HN yet...

peppermint_tea··on Children's Risk of Serious Illness from Covid-19 Is as Low as It Is for the Flu
this article is from may 2021. I suggest we add a warning to the title since the omicron may cause more harm to children.

peppermint_tea··on San Francisco Mayor Declares State of Emergency to Fight City’s ‘Nasty Streets’
> Just because some shit happened ages ago

although it is tempting to say let's have a fresh start from today, and we are all equal and all have the same chances, some damage are made across generations (e.g check the wikipedia of Canadian Indian residential school system)

end of slavery in the u.s : 1865

end of racial segregation in the u.s : 1964~1968

gerrymandering : ongoing

this does not seems age/centuries ago to me, and a group(white) definitely profited from this inequality and pass the wealth on their heir, giving them an early advantage in life.

all I am saying, is, invest where the social need is, not based on the color of skin...

peppermint_tea··on Protonmail was identified as spam in Gmail
good point
peppermint_tea··on Protonmail was identified as spam in Gmail
The problem comes from the giants using close source algorithms for mail filtering... yes, they are very efficient at filtering spam, but you have no way to align on their close source filtering process to make sure your email goes through/not marked as spam. Ironically, I once in a while receive a spam from a gmail account, and it is not marked as spam.

I would also add we are the problem, we picked the giants because they are free and convenient. By doing so, we gave them way too much power over the email ecosystem and they can start making their own rules.

The only way forward in my opinion is moving out of these allegedly free services and making the internet user centric again by de-centralizing.

peppermint_tea··on Ask HN: My client want an agent on my laptop. Is this the new normal?
Anything corporate software is a no go on my personal devices. I like to draw a clear line between work and personal life. The only exception I made is having google authenticator on my cellphone, I feel like I would have been unreasonable to ask a company provided phone for this application only...

kvm switch are great to be able to re-use your input/output devices without mixing up personal and corporate stuff... this is what I use... A physical button to separate the 2 environments.

peppermint_tea··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
100% agree on everything you said. I would just add that all this violence should be shown without any kind of censorship to (in this case) the american people at supper time. I wonder how fast the public opinion would change then...
peppermint_tea··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
>> I agree that the US has overextended its military and is involved in a lot of conflicts and operations that seem very irrelevant and poorly reasoned

translation : killed a lot of innocent people. Men, Women and Children.

I am emotional about this, and rightly so.

peppermint_tea··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
done, thank you.
peppermint_tea··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
Thanks for making that short summary for the people who have not followed the saga since the beginning. I believe wikileaks bother many/much more people (remember paypal and visa not taking donation for the site) but what you added is short and concise to put someone up to speed quickly.
peppermint_tea··on Julian Assange can be extradited to the US, court rules
relevant : https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/11/30/assange-and-th...

Seems like the "assurances" given by the U.S should not be taken seriously. Previous actions speak (or should I say shout) much louder than words.

P.S : Adding "FREE JULIAN ASSANGE" to my personal website, I encourage everyone to do the same

peppermint_tea··on Re-thinking electronic mail
just testing now, not every residential ip it seems (I moved country and now my email go through without the message : ...belongs to a residential ip...)
