penguin_booze··on ICE Collected Nearly 1M People's DNA Last Year–Including Young Children
Unless ICE was also collecting young children, it should say: "... including that of young children".
penguin_booze··on How the words we teach English language learners changed
We have america to thank for that.

penguin_booze··on EU now fears US interference in European elections
Fear? The American circus went to Hungary to prop-up Orban. Thankfully, the people of Hungary gave the clowns an emphatic whack across the face, and kept them in their place.
penguin_booze··on A walk through of the DeltaNet family of linear attention variants
"you could have..." is among the top insulting phrases used by maths-adjacent people. Others in that league are "it should now be obvious...", "it's abundantly clear...", "it can be easily shown that...", "this is nothing but..." etc.

The rest of us reading this are like, holy batman, what the fuck was that?!

penguin_booze··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
No-one in their right mind wants to support IRGC. But, to see an egotistic, deranged, clown and the entire circus getting slapped in the face, is very satisfying to watch.
penguin_booze··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
A garden needs a gardener. It's the end when people stop caring or when starts chasing superficial metrics and tawdry toys.
penguin_booze··on Everyone should know SIMD
Does anyone know of a good hands-on introductory and practical tutorial on SIMD? I know that SIMD doesn't imply particular instruction set but a pattern of concurrent data transformation.

I guess what I'm looking for is something that addresses the common idioms in SIMD. For example, want to do concurrent data look up? This is how you do it in SIMD; this is how you search; this is how to prepare your data in a manner conducive to SIMD operations; these are the data types you typically find in programming languages, like __mm128; so on and so forth.

penguin_booze··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
So, continuing to profit--forever--from someone's else work, at scale, without their prior consent, is fair use?

It's funny that crimes can be settled in cash. IOW, everything has a price; and the price is always right. Settlement ought to be the euphemism for blood money.

In addition to the settlement, what I'd consider fair is to have these companies pay royalties in perpetuity. Of course, that's not tractable.

penguin_booze··on 'Likweli': A new monkey species discovered in the Congo Basin
I can't imagine anything worse that could happen to an animal than getting discovered by humans. Dear monkey, please run, and run far!

penguin_booze··on Linux 0.11 rewritten in idiomatic Rust, boots in QEMU
I'm wondering if anyone's attempting to revitalise the old Minix. Minix started out an educational software, from which, Torvalds admitted, he drew inspiration. Since then, they had higher ambitions. And now, from the last I heard, it has evolved into neither here nor there.
penguin_booze··on The git history command

penguin_booze··on How the terrorist group Boko Haram uses frontier AI

penguin_booze··on China sentences official to death for taking $325M in bribes
Too bad China doesn't have a president fit for pardoning thugs.

penguin_booze··on This blog is written in en-GB
> It uses the dd-mm-yyyy date format like the rest of Europe

Everywhere sane uses a monotonic order: either increasing or decreasing units. Americans had to be different, somehow - it's a compulsion.

penguin_booze··on US Supreme Court Just Blew Up EU-US Data Transfers
As long as US dollar remains the reserve currency, others will have to suck up to the US. This is why moving away from the USD is critical. Beyond that, people should pull their investments away from the US. This is difficult, however: US is the market that offers most returns (as to for how long, that remains to be seen), but it takes only a initial dominos falling.

It's refreshing to see someone using the correct phrasing.

The often-seen, stupid way is 'who is this book for'.
