pelagic_sky··on Ask HN: What do you have more than enough of?
Stuff. I could do with a lot less stuff around my house. I need to put in the effort and do a major spring cleaning and get rid of all the things I no longer need or use that are taking up space.
pelagic_sky··on The bike collection of Robin Williams
I've always used quiver to describe a collection of surfboards. But wouldnt be surprised to see it used on other objects as well.
pelagic_sky··on Pieces of Career Advice I Wish I'd Known Earlier
Some of these are actually bad advice depending on the situation and circumstance. For example, the Jerry Seinfeld one is horrible. As an artist you have to be able to market yourself. The ones who didn’t got damn well lucky.
pelagic_sky··on AI can now master your music
I've been using Ozone over the last few years for my home masters and even with all the AI and bells and whistles, it's nowhere near as good as a master from a studio who uses analog gear. I will also admit my ears are just not there yet. What it is good for is cutting a demo to send out to labels or DJs to play at shows.
pelagic_sky··on Ask HN: Is the job market is bad as everyone claims it is?
Yes. It is brutal. Any position posted is swarmed with applicants. You’ll need some serious networking to get in the door. And even then, there’s already a line of equally capable people vying for the same roll.
pelagic_sky··on [dead]
Nice write up. I am a lead designer at a FAANG and have a coworker who is struggling to get promoted to senior. They focus almost entirely on driving business value but they struggle to prove the work and product decisions are because of them. They also struggle to make time to have a POV on their area of focus and to build documents (decks) around it, and solicit said documents. I am trying to coach them down this "marketing themselves" path. But in all honesty, the budgets for promos right now is abysmal, so it's going to be even harder to stand out and get a promotion.
pelagic_sky··on The Hawai’i Seaglider Initiative: A new approach to travel between the islands
Watching that demo video was terrifying to me. The water is unpredictable and this thing wants to be close to it at full speed. It would have to be perfect conditions to get me into one of those.
pelagic_sky··on Are companies trying to stop remote work in 2024?
Yes and No.
pelagic_sky··on Stanley cups took the world by storm. Then the backlash began
What a depressing article over consumption and social media.
pelagic_sky··on Show HN: I made a free dating profile bio generator using GPT-4 Vision
I would try it, but I don't want to sign in with a Google account and give you access to the information in there.
pelagic_sky··on It's Not a Cigarette. It's Not a Vape. and It's Big in Japan
Heated Tobacco Products.

"The first time I saw an IQOS, the innovative tobacco product on which Philip Morris International is betting billions of dollars to replace cigarettes, was at a wedding in 2016. A friend had excitedly pulled me outside to try this new device that had enabled him to finally kick his smoking habit. Not quite a cigarette because it didn't ignite, not quite a vape because it used actual tobacco, supposedly less toxic than conventional cigarettes but satisfying enough to compete with them, it seemed that this heated tobacco might be the future of nicotine."

pelagic_sky··on He felt 'creatively dead', then harnessed the power of boredom
Make time and space to be alone with your thoughts until you are inspired to return to productivity. Or something like that. For me. Instead of music making (which I would do forever if you let me) it’s going out hiking or backpacking and completely disconnecting from tech where I can explore my thoughts and think about the inspirational things that come to mind.
pelagic_sky··on Why thinking hard makes us feel tired

pelagic_sky··on Pepper X named hottest chilli after 10 year effort
FTA: Top five hottest

1. Pepper X: 2.69 million units

2. Carolina Reaper: 1.64 million units

3. Trinidad Scorpion Butch T: 1.46 million units

4. Naga Viper: 1.38 million units

5. Trinidad Moruga scorpion: 1.2 million units

pelagic_sky··on New York's Airbnb Ban Is Descending into Pure Chaos
What a clickbait title. There is no chaos at all. People with units for rent are trying to skirt the new law by listing on social sites. Of course this comes with risks for both parties. But its not "Pure Chaos".
pelagic_sky··on Ask HN: I desperately want a solo business
If you are not afraid of working hard you should be keeping your day job and work on your idea in your spare time until it takes off.
pelagic_sky··on The Long History of Nobody Wants to Work Anymore
To be fair, I've never wanted to "work".
pelagic_sky··on Bluesky: Building a Social Internet
Bluesky is dead in the water. There was a point where people were talking about it and wanted in. No one (in my social sphere) is talking about it anymore. I even mentioned it at work (FAANG) the other day and most people haven’t even heard of it. I’d love for it to be a thing. But history dictates they missed the opportunity.
pelagic_sky··on SoftBanks's Masayoshi Son says ChatGPT moves him to tears
"Son’s presentation goes on to note: “A.I. will solve problems mankind cannot,” with accompanying visuals of many problems mankind has faced, including a car crash, a fire, and police tape (crime)."

Total Psycho-pass vibes here.

pelagic_sky··on Making Figma better for developers with Dev Mode
As a designer, all my icons are symbols and you can find the symbol artboard on another page with all the icons sized consistently with consistent naming conventions. You can select all and export as you please. Nothing drives me crazier than icons that are not properly formatted in both size and name.
pelagic_sky··on Shutterless cameras deserve good shutter sounds
As an amateur photographer with over 20years experience, I don’t want or need shutter sounds. I haven’t even thought about this until now. It’s like saying electric vehicles need good sounding gas engine noises coming from it. Sure, it’s nice to have as a gimmic. Some people definitely want it. It’s just not for me.
pelagic_sky··on The search for Earth's hidden mountains
Went looking for some visualizations on all of this and found this article helped. https://eos.org/features/the-unsolved-mystery-of-the-earth-b...
pelagic_sky··on Is AI killing the stock photo industry? A data perspective
yes. same thing applies. ghost writers can write the whole song/book or rewrite a concept given to them.
pelagic_sky··on Is AI killing the stock photo industry? A data perspective
I could potentially see movies needing to credit AI in the end credits. Not sure how that would work out. Maybe list all the scenes and what AI was used? But none-the-less, not an easy clear cut solution.
pelagic_sky··on Guy on Twitter Keeps Inventing Horrible Tech Features That No One Wants
I mean, the title is kind of wrong because there are quite a few of these features I would love. Just not the dueling for airline seats...
pelagic_sky··on I Kicked Caffeine
At one point in my life drinking coffee would give me vertigo. I ended up going caffeine free for a couple weeks until I am guessing my anxiety went down enough that drinking coffee wouldn't give me vertigo. Since then there have been a couple times in my life where I needed to cut back coffee before things got bad again. Now I typically have one and a half cups a day and I am ok.
pelagic_sky··on The U.S. Will Trade Seattle for Seoul
Since I live in Seattle, I would like to make this small nit know. :)

The headline is the only place the word "Seattle" appears. In the article, it quotes "The United States will not sacrifice ‘Los Angeles for Seoul."

pelagic_sky··on Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing
Its either getting hammered or it just takes ages to load.
pelagic_sky··on The White House on why Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t invited to its A.I. summit
Those who were invited:

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic

Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet

pelagic_sky··on Art Professor Says A.I. Is the Future. It’s Students Who Need Convincing
As an artist, I would be trying to build/train a model off of my own work to help speed up the creative process and work with AI to create unique images that I couldn't think of.
