pech0rin··on Calm Company Fund Is Taking a Break
Shutting down without trying to spook their investors or current portfolio companies. Couching it as taking a break seems clever but I’m guessing any seasoned investors will read between the lines and see that this isn’t working.

The problem with thinking everyone else is wrong (ie how VCs operate) is that usually it turns out they are not. I’m guessing it wasn’t the story telling prowess of lack of deep connections (the common scapegoat for failing) but rather an unappealing offer for investors. Huge risks need huge returns. Bootstrapped companies may be slightly less risky but definitely less upside for investors. If there is no huge payday then investors know that capital will be used better elsewhere.

Im not hating on the thesis. Personally I like bootstrapped businesses much better but there is a reason they don’t attract investors.

pech0rin··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project (2021)
Not sure why he thinks he is in the right here? I would be pissed too if an intern left and then made a website that was just copying the internal work. I love how he says with a straight face that he didnt use any of the code from replit when obviously as an intern he saw all the ideas and constructs. Its not like he had a mind wipe.

I’m in a small minority on this site I’m sure but professionalism is important and this screams immaturity.

pech0rin··on I was denied tenure – how do I cope?
God the entitlement of academia is insane. Living life in an environment where every next step is somehow a given breeds such a strange culture of childishness. Almost spent my whole life in it, so glad I got out. People hate on the private sector but at least it feels connected to reality on a much more basic level.
pech0rin··on AeroSpace is an i3-like tiling window manager for macOS
haven’t used this one but I use yabai and it works exactly as you describe
pech0rin··on Ask HN: 30y After 'On Lisp', PAIP etc., Is Lisp Still "Beating the Averages"?
I have always loved Lisp but practically its not easy to hire for or find a job for. In the “normal” realm I have always found ruby to be the closest cousin. There are huge differences but the malleability of ruby is my “hackers dream” and I love using it. Most people only think of it with regards to Rails, but I use it for everything and its a delight.
pech0rin··on UI elements with a hand-drawn, sketchy look
thats the entire point of this. to generate mockup software
pech0rin··on Engineering for Slow Internet
Great post. One thing though. Maybe the engineers were misguided but its possible they were trying to mitigate slow loris attacks. Which are annoying to deal with and hard to separate from users who are just sending data at a really slow pace. Having had to mitigate these attacks before, we usually do a global timeout on the backend. Maybe different but definitely a possibility.
pech0rin··on Building the first highway segment in the U.S. that can charge electric vehicles
Obviously you didn’t read the article because its talking about freight and trucks, which is how the majority of US shipping economy is run. So many low effort comments on this site recently.
pech0rin··on Pulsar, the best code editor since Atom
I don’t get the point of talking about how much you love something by shitting on what other people use. Ha ha emacs users are idiots. Maybe I’m being overly sensitive but whats the point of saying this? Can’t you just talk about whats great about your thing and not take pot shots at other tech.
pech0rin··on Fly.io has GPUs now
Yep they have terrible reliability and support. Couldn’t deploy for 2 days once and they actually told me to use another company. Unmanaged dbs masquerading as managed. Random downtime. I could go on but it’s not a production ready service and I moved off of it months ago.
pech0rin··on I worked 80 hour weeks to deliver a platform for a hedge fund, then they fired me
Only time I work that much is for myself. The employer has no obligation besides whatever your contract says. They can and will screw you over to meet their bottom line. Depending on his non-compete, why not just build a new platform again and sell it to other hedge funds, seems like it would be quite lucrative.
pech0rin··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (February 2024)

pech0rin··on Show HN: Phrasing – learn every language, to any level
I'm also an advanced Japanese learner and find this disappointing. It would be great if your marketing materials said which languages you support and which you don't. It says "learn any language", but I see a lot of comments in here about oh it doesn't work well with this or that language. It makes sense to focus yourself on the languages that you actually do support. Over promise and under deliver is not the way to build trust or a good product.
pech0rin··on Automatic class sorting with Prettier (2022)
It follows the order the classes are written in the css so it makes understanding how the css is applied easier. It’s not just an arbitrary ordering
pech0rin··on An app can be a home-cooked meal (2020)
I disagree with this. If you are truly building for yourself there is no criticism, no prying eyes, it is well and truly yours. Even with PR and issues closed people read it, maybe comment about it on social media or hackernews. There is beauty in a creation that is complete private.
pech0rin··on Bash script for making nice screenshots
It's nice to have screenshots with a little buffer, background, and dropshadow. But I really didn't feel like spending any money to one of those fancy screenshot services so I made one with bash / imagemagick. I generated my background image with DALL-E.

You can see an example of the image here: https://twitter.com/samcraigjohnson/status/17321947801747621....

Shadow is adjustable with https://imagemagick.org/script/command-line-options.php imagemagick -shadow parameter.

pech0rin··on Rage: Fast web framework compatible with Rails
yes of course it is. Shopify is Rails, as are countless other companies.
pech0rin··on Deno Cron
The "crappy bespoke cloud setup" is usually the result of people whose jobs are usually just regular app devs, but had been thrown into the infrastructure side head first. I think the key is to actually have someone who knows what they are talking about.

Unlike other people I don't think you need to hire someone directly. I do devops freelancing so you could hire someone like me. Or look online for various people that do it. I mean if its a toy app without many customers then who cares, but once you start scaling infrastructure gets to me more and more important.

pech0rin··on Reasonable expectation of effectiveness for large dog lifespan extension
I dont think what you are describing is a large dog. I believe this is more geared towards great danes and the like which are more around 150ish or more pounds. Those dogs require much less exercise and are actually great apartment dogs.
pech0rin··on HTML First
I’m sorry but what? This is terrible advice. I have never understood the desire to keep the web “inclusive”. Is the web not already inclusive? Can someone not already build a website with simple html/css?

The web has evolved and taken the place of desktop apps by and large. That is what SaaS has done. These websites are built to be fully functioning pieces of complex software. Using some tiny tools to markup html is never going to work for these types of applications.

I find this hand wringing over the complexity of the web so strange. Can we all just move on? The web has changed. I have been programming for over 15 years professionally. Yeah its changed. yeah frontend frameworks are a pain in the ass a lot of the time. So lets make it better, not fall backwards to a “simpler” time.

pech0rin··on The Humane AI Pin Launches Its Campaign to Replace Phones
weebo is about 100x more useful than this
pech0rin··on Show HN: Scorecard.gg – minimalist scoring tool for your favorite board games
Awesome idea, definitely something I would use because I play yahtzee a lot randomly. But when I play board games I only have my phone so mobile version needs a lot of work. I have to imagine most people are the same so in my opinion you should think about that as default usecase when thinking of UI. Will follow the project. Nice work
pech0rin··on Migrating our backend from Vercel to Fly.io
I find it interesting that people seem to be trading short term gains with long term reliability and maintenance costs. This glut of 0-friction deploy services lull people into a nice false sense of security.

But in actuality you are wasting hours, days, weeks of time when they become unreliable, support is unresponsive, or something unexpected pops up.

There is a huge advantage (outside of amateur, low importance projects) for putting in place - at the beginning - an infrastructure that is dead simple and reliable. AWS, GCP may have some upfront complexity but provide advantages in terms of reliability, knowledgeable support, and proven track records.

I would never recommend these current platforms to be used for building a long term business on top of. I have been tempted by the siren song of one click deploys but in the long run so much extra time is wasted.

pech0rin··on California will require VC firms to report founder diversity statistics
totally agree. would love to expound on this point based on what I have seen in VC / angel world after going through a round but honestly at this point and this environment I dont even want to share my honest opinion.
pech0rin··on The Matching Problem in Dating
Its not “irrational female” vs “reasonable men”. It was described well in the article. Its that women have historically needed to date higher status men to guarantee their life for their children. The sperm is cheap vs eggs are expensive that the author mentioned. Its not a conscious decision its the dynamics that human beings have been playing out for centuries and it is exacerbated but the order of magnitudes higher dating pool that apps provide (just as author mentions)
pech0rin··on “This Is a Disaster:” Game Developers Scramble to Deal with Unity’s New Fees
Not sure you read the article. Unity explicitly states they are NOT applying this retroactively.
pech0rin··on Total data loss after botched GitOps and failed backups
Very sorry to hear about this. Working in ops for 10+ years I know that drop kick in the stomach feeling when everything is going wrong and nothing is working as expected. I hope the author continues forward and takes this as a lesson.

My own two cents which others have echoed is this is extremely overly complex setup for this situation. Its been told 100x times on HN about this but there is a reason. The more complex a system is the more points of failure you have. For all the tools you were running you should have had a team of ops people. In reality a database, some servers and a load balancer would get you 99% of the way there.

Modern engineering is a dumpster fire of complexity mostly hocked by shills working to sell contracts to enterprises.

You have learned this lesson the hard way but less moving parts means less things that can go wrong. Basics like monitoring, backup, testing etc go only so far if your system is a rube goldberg machine. Hope as an industry someday we can get back to simplicity

pech0rin··on Treat your CI system as a product for faster and better feedback
I have started JavaScript/TypeScript development over the past year or so. Coming from the Ruby, Python, and Java community its really interesting to me to see how many of the same problems that say, Rails for example, solved about development are being re-hashed over and over again.

I'm not a JS hater by any means, I find using something like Remix to be a really nice way to build web applications. Its mainly the whole ecosystem/community surrounding it that feels like its starting from scratch all the time that I find to be sort of infuriating. Sometimes I wanna shout THESE THINGS ARE ALREADY SOLVED. But maybe I'm becoming an old dude and just yelling at the servers.

pech0rin··on Fly.io Postgres cluster down for 3 days, no word from them about it
I really want to love Fly.io. It's super easy to get setup and use, but to be honest I don't think anyone should be building mission critical applications on their service. I ended up migrating everything over to AWS (which I reallllly didn't want to do) because:

* Frequent machines not working, random outages, builds not working

* Support wasn't responsive, didn't read my questions (kept asking same questions over and over again) -- I paid for a higher tier specifically for support.

* General lack of features (can't add sidecars, hard to integrate with external monitoring solutions)

* Lack of documentation -- For happy path its good but any edge cases the documentation is really lacking.

Anyway, for hobby projects its fine and nice. I still host a lot of personal projects there. But I have to move my companies infrastructure off of it because it ended up costing us too much time/frustration, etc. I really had high hopes going into it as I had read it was a spiritual successor of sorts to Heroku which was an amazing service in its day, but I don't think its there yet.

pech0rin··on Launch HN: Onu (YC W23) – Turn scripts into internal tools in minutes
Not related to anything but does the name Onu have some meaning? For me I am always curious why names of companies have no connection to their product (unless this is in a language other than english and means internal tool)
