pech0rin··on If we do not stop to help each other, what do we become?
Stack overflow was one of the best ways to learn and mature as an engineer “back in the day”. The meme is that devs would copy and paste and hope it worked. The reality was more like you had an obscure bug, you wrote a detailed and cohesive question, and you connected with people who were more knowledgable and would help you.

It also sharpened your writing and thinking. By responding to questions you solidified your understanding of topics.

It got a lot of hate for the moderation but I think that was mainly in huge communities where literally “dumb” questions got bombarded every minute. Smaller tech like Docker when it first arrived on the scene had communities that learned together.

Spent a lot of time there when I was a few years out of school and still trying to figure out what it meant to be a software eng. It’s sad to see it become a ghost town and I think it’s a net negative for young engineers to have an all knowing entity spit out every answer.

pech0rin··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
You sound like someone who is enjoying the retirement benefits and full social safety net. One which does not have the funding to continue on for the youth of today. You have a certain smugness about your current situation but maybe you should look at how things are actually coming along today for young people staring down the barrel of higher inflation and lower wages.
pech0rin··on Nobody Asked for a Crab Chair
“we should never try building new things because they get peoples hopes up” this is such a moronic attitude to have that seems more and more common. its the harrison bergeron-ification of the world
pech0rin··on Ise Jingu and the Pyramid of Enabling Technologies (2021)
please god do not. japan is already chock full of tourists. please don't overrun one of the most sacred places in japan. kyoto’s most important shrines and temples have become basically a theme park packed with tourists and locals barely visit anymore. just leave Ise alone.
pech0rin··on Show HN: A canvas-based note taking and organizer app
its an IME bug and software is ripe with them. you need to do a check to see if the user “isComposing” (i think is the function). because enter is used in IME to pick characters based on input. its the same with japanese and chinese. whole slew of US based SaaS products never deal with it and it makes input unbearable for these languages.
pech0rin··on The Companies Cutting Headcount for AI Will Lose to the Ones Who Didn't
The misunderstanding is that people equate what these companies are saying and what they are doing. In reality this is the perfect time to fire people under cover. This happens every X years where as leadership you can say this tech is displacing you, when in truth its just that you arent needed anymore.

This is a capitalism functioning correctly as labor as in then moved to places it is needed more. Its sort of shocking to see devs complain about getting laid off. Thats the point of a high variance career. Great and terrible outcomes go hand in hand, if you want one you must expect the other.

pech0rin··on Cisco workforce reductions
Cisco fires people all the time. They have a huge workforce this isn’t really newsworthy.
pech0rin··on Getting arrested in Japan
I love how this starts out by listing “innocent” laws that you can break. Its your job to know the laws of the country and if you break them you should be punished. US people love visiting Japan and talking about how safe it is. Why exactly do you think its so safe?
pech0rin··on GTFOBins
Because you have to have shell access to the server to use any of these.
pech0rin··on Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed
This is insanely dumb. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for you. So if people want to do it anyway who cares. I understand the cafe and indoor space bans but not allowing anyone to do it seems stupid. I don’t smoke but UK has really gone off the deep end recently with social controls, what is the point?
pech0rin··on Coding agents have replaced every framework I used
Strange how many people are comparing code to art. Software engineering has never been about the code written, it’s about solving problems with software. With AI we can solve more problems with software. I have been writing code for 25 years, I love using AI. It allows me to get to the point faster.

The author is right, eliminating all this framework cruft will be a boon for building great software. I was a skeptic but it seems obvious now its largely going to be an improvement.

pech0rin··on I'm returning my Framework 16
I ran linux for 15 years on a range of different machines. Desktop the most successfully. For laptops I tried everything but once I switched to a mac I’ve never gone back. The hardware is at least twice as good as any other laptop.

I’ve seen framework getting a lot of mind share recently. Especially with DHH singing their praises. I have come to loathe apple software over the years but can’t get over terrible build quality.

I thought framework was supposed to be the premium linux option but after reading this it looks same quality as all those windows turned linux machines.

pech0rin··on Cloudflare was down
Rewriting in Rust is paying dividends.
pech0rin··on We gave 5 LLMs $100K to trade stocks for 8 months
8 months of a huge bull market. Not exactly indicative of any real insight.
pech0rin··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
Depressing how many comments are supporting this practice. The point is tests are supposed to be hard and fair. Everyone gets the same amount of time, same preparation for a presentation. Then you are judged based on your ability, preparation and skill. Pressure leads to growth, competition to effort. I hate this new world where we bend over backwards to make everything “fair”.
pech0rin··on Anthropic acquires Bun
Look Bun is a great product but something hilarious about the company that is “going to replace all software developers with AI” BUYING software. You are building a product that is supposed to make software cost 0 right? Why wouldn’t you just “vibe” code yourself Bun?
pech0rin··on Left to Right Programming
I guess I’m so old that I remember time without autocomplete. Where programmers just knew what functions existed and how to use them. Usually by looking them up in a manual and then -gasp- remembering them. Languages shouldn’t be optimized for laziness or not using your brain.

“Shut up old man” yes yes okay.

pech0rin··on -2000 Lines of code
I'm sick and tired of all these AI generated comments. Oh you got the AI to use lower case! Wow it still writes the exact same way.
pech0rin··on How I use my terminal
this is cool but acting like this is some insane usage is funniest part for me. emacs and 100 other tools can do this easily and have been doing it for 30 years
pech0rin··on Show HN: I’m 16 years old and working on my first startup, a study app
Fake reviews and fake pictures makes me never want to use your app.
pech0rin··on What it's like working for American companies as an Australian
Also the Americans don’t work barefoot
pech0rin··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
This is the most childish thing I’ve read. And shows a lot about he doesn’t have any people relying on him or community to support. He takes one hike and throws away 60m. Doesn’t try to find anything interesting to do at Atlassian just calls his coworkers NPCs. This is zero-empathy Peter Pan syndrome at its worse.

Sad how he just goes adventure hopping to try and find meaning. The problem is no matter where you are you are also there. Time to look inward and not outward.

pech0rin··on Tokyo University Used "Tiananmen Square" Keyword to Block Chinese Admissions
why is this site allowed to be posted? most of his stories are completely fabricated with no evidence. he doesn’t even live in Japan but just cosplays as being a resident here. so frustrating seeing his content taken seriously anywhere online.
pech0rin··on Browsing negative content online makes mental health struggles worse: Study
this is like the study about water making you hydrated. quite possibly the most obvious outcome of all time.
pech0rin··on Rewrite It in Rails
Rails (and possibly Django and Laravel) are just light-years ahead of any other stack for building web apps. They have dealt with all the tedium, know all the requirements, and actually get out of your face when building an application. I have been developing web apps for 15 years now.

I have tried Meteor (back in the day), Remix, Nextjs, Node w/ Express, etc. Always talking about how much better they are. But in my mind web dev is a solved problem. The js stuff is mainly just developers wanking off, driven by a bunch of dollars from big companies.

Systems stuff, deployment infra, etc. is great for stuff like Rust & Go, but shoehorning into web dev makes no sense. I would love to just move on from this debate but it seems thats going to never be possible.

pech0rin··on PEP 760: No more bare excepts
Cant stand the infantilization of software tools. People can choose for themselves what features to use or not use. Doesnt need to be determined by our keepers. Also do Python maintainers just hate backwards compat as some sort of religion?
pech0rin··on I Am Tired of AI
As an aside its really interesting how the human brain can so easily read an AI essay and realize its AI. You would think that with the vast corpus these models were trained on there would be a more human sounding voice.

Maybe it's overfitting or maybe just the way models work under the hood but any time I see AI written stuff on twitter, reddit, linkedin its so obvious its almost disgusting.

I guess its just the brain being good at pattern matching, but it's crazy how fast we have adapted to recognize this.

pech0rin··on 1M Users
Looks interesting. Definitely nailing the old myspace aesthetic. I’d be more curious about active users versus registered users. Social networks are usually defined by activity. Unfortunately registered users probably contains a lot of bots and spammers.
pech0rin··on Why the Wisconsin pizza farm movement is an idea whose time has come
Its in the first few paragraph, did you even read it? Also sort of obviously its a farm that sells pizza.
pech0rin··on Please don't mention AI again
Author makes good points but suffers from “i am genius and you are an idiot” syndrome which makes it seem mostly the ranting of an asshole vs a coherent article about the state of AI.
