pcj-github··on Physicists steer chemical reactions by magnetic fields and quantum interference
This is super simple atoms at a millionth of a degree above zero. It has no practical relevance to influencing the outcome of a chemical reaction at normal temperatures. But, it's not every day you can demonstrate a new way to tune chemical reactions, even in extremely specialized environments like these.
pcj-github··on Apple removes Python 2.7 in macOS 12.3 beta
So will the command "python" be available out of the box (as python version 3) Or do scripts and users explicitly need to say "python3"?
pcj-github··on I’m porting the TypeScript type checker tsc to Go
No spec, but the golden files that check that the compiler is working as intended are very comprehensive. If you can generate the same ~38,000 files in this directory from the test cases, you're pretty much on par with tsc: https://github.com/microsoft/TypeScript/tree/main/tests/base...
pcj-github··on Revisiting why hyperlinks are blue
I recall purchasing Framemaker in a PC brick-and-mortar store around those early times for something like $650, it was by far the most expensive piece of software I'd purchased. I'm not sure I've personally bought any software for that much in the decades since.
pcj-github··on Dev corrupts NPM libs 'colors' and 'faker', breaking thousands of apps
Guy with history of mental illness is marking commits as "endgame" and making references to Aaron Schwartz. Hope someone is reaching out with professional help for him, or I fear there will be one final HN post about this story in the near future.

I think he has a right to torpedo his own projects, and GitHub should stay out of it. Pin your deps, folks.

pcj-github··on The Charles Mingus CAT-alog (1972)
Our cat spontaneously unlocked this achievement at about 5 years of age... We heard a little noise in the bathroom for a couple weeks and could not figure it out until we actually caught her in the act. Hilarious, and quite convenient!
pcj-github··on Quit Your Job
You quit your job and started a blog. Wow. And then you wrote an article on your blog in a hypomanic state describing how you quit your job and started a blog. Amazing.
pcj-github··on We handle 80TB and 5M page views a month for under $400
Whether or not a site is hosted in the cloud, it will break from time to time. S** invariably happens, no matter what. So, even if you host in the cloud, you're going to have problems, but they will be different problems. A developer to backup and support the site will be required, one way or the other. Case in point: polyhaven.com (the subject of this article) is not reachable as I write this.
pcj-github··on A brief history of code search at GitHub
Sounds like it would have been very difficult to implement this without some excellent open source projects. Is github planning to open-source other parts of the system?
pcj-github··on Go 1.18 Beta 1 is released
OK so this is about the go binary itself, not a new stamping behavior of binaries coming out of the compiler/linker?
pcj-github··on Go 1.18 Beta 1 is released
A bit surprised by:

"The go command now embeds version control information in binaries including the currently checked-out revision, commit time, and a flag indicating whether edited or untracked files are present. Version control information is embedded if the go command is invoked in a directory within a Git, Mercurial, Fossil, or Bazaar repository, and the main package and its containing main module are in the same repository. This information may be omitted using the flag -buildvcs=false."

Curious why this was included.

pcj-github··on The most powerful MRI scanner in the world delivers its first images
Why does an article titled...

"WORLD PREMIERE The most powerful MRI scanner in the world delivers its first images!"

... have only a single (crappy) image. Sigh.

pcj-github··on 5 side projects in 6 years, earning $0
What seems lacking in the choice of projects is a particular expertise in any of these subjects. Pick an area of study, try and narrow it as much as possible, stick with it over several years, and seek to become the world's expert on that very narrow topic (which is hopefully useful). Then you will understand what needs to be built.
pcj-github··on I'm sorry
I just don't get why not drop a brief explanation on the validity of the PR? She could have so easily avoided this. Active maintainers are right to be pissed.
pcj-github··on Stripe Press
Looks awesome! But, why? Seems like a distraction for a financial company.
pcj-github··on [dead]
A lot of assumptions about causality based on weak data here. This company is just trying to capitalize on what is perceives as an inbound marketing opportunity. Next.
pcj-github··on The Kidney Project successfully tests a prototype bioartificial kidney
It's obviously a hard problem. As someone who used to do dialysis-access operations (AV fistulas/AV shunts), just looking at their diagram and seeing 3 location with a plastic::tissue interface (artery, vein, bladder) is a massive hurdle alone. The connection between the artery and the device will stenose, the connection between the vein and the device will clot (despite whatever is in the press release, I can guarantee it will). And then exposing the entire apparatus to the bladder - it will get infected, and then the whole thing needs to be removed.

So, even if they got the actual device perfect, the realities of interfacing that with an actual person, for any reasonable length of time... Don't hold your breath.

This is why kidney transplant is so great... it's all real tissue, even if you need lifelong antisuppression.

pcj-github··on Monads are monoids in the category of endofunctors
Can't resist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADqLBc1vFwI&t=1s
pcj-github··on MIT-designed project achieves major advance toward fusion energy
If we had "an inexhaustible, carbon-free source of energy that you can deploy anywhere and at any time" we'd wreck the planet faster than we already are... I guess at least a few could escape though.
pcj-github··on New study examines ‘Achilles heel’ of cancer tumours
As others stated, this is really a PR piece.

The study aim was to see what the tolerable dose for a future study might be. 17 patients ranging from metastatic breast ca to unresectable colon ca were studied from 2014-2016.

Patients were given either 500, 1000, or 2000mg of what must be a truly horrible liquid to drink and then watched for adverse outcomes.

Most patients discontinued treatment due to disease progression, and patients in the 2000mg dosage group had trouble tolerating the medication.

Anyway, not to knock the study, hope things pan out, but to market this as the "achilles heel of cancer" is, well, a bit hard to swallow.

pcj-github··on Physicist discovered an escape from Hawking’s black hole paradox
Thanks, all great responses!
pcj-github··on Physicist discovered an escape from Hawking’s black hole paradox
I recently heard somewhere that the cosmic background radiation (CMR, 2.7 kelvin or so) is so much hotter than the "temperature" generated by Hawking radiation of black holes (apparently on the order of a billionth of a kelvin) such that they effectively do not radiate, and are not expected to do so for a loooong time (until expansion of the universe drops the background temp to an incredibly cold temperature).

What I have not been able to determine is when they might be expected to occur? How far in the future will black holes start evaporating? (I believe the answer depends on the size of the black hole as well)

pcj-github··on Show HN: Earthly – Better Builds
The comparison to Bazel here is really not appropriate. The core competency of Bazel is to know exactly the build graph and be able to do the minimum amount of work possible. I don't see how this (basically syntactic sugar over multi-stage docker builds) is going to scale in a large monorepo with hundreds or thousands of developers and still maintain CI build times on the order of minutes.
pcj-github··on Azlo Is Closing Down
Feedback on novo seems pretty horrible https://investorjunkie.com/reviews/novo/. Anyone have a god or bad experience to share?
pcj-github··on FTC issues orders to nine social media and video streaming services
As much as I despise social media and the effect it is having on the general population, after reading the (50-page) request and the dissent, this request by the FTC is completely bananas.

This is essentially how it reads:

"Foreach social media and streaming service, provide an audit of all electrons passing through or near the service. Account for the precise position & momentum of said particles, the method by which they are tracked, and the person or persons responsible for auditing bias of said electrons against members of the current political party. You have five days to complete the report."

pcj-github··on Google is getting left behind due to horrible UI/UX
Yes I'm getting pretty bored of these kinds of posts that offer no real ideas (this was just a rant) in order to drive traffic to their paid newsletter.
pcj-github··on An ex-Googler’s guide to dev tools
I'm a big fan. In order to accomplish its core mission of making build & test so much faster, it has to have near complete knowledge of your build graph (the source files and precisely how they depend upon one another). This means that to get the main benefit, you need to go all-in.

Plug: for those interested in codesearch within bazel repositories, my vscode plugin for bazel has a special feature for this: https://stackb.github.io/bazel-stack-vscode/searching

pcj-github··on Information overload helps fake news spread
Apropos that this post appears to be submitted by a bot account, posting 10-20 links per day.
pcj-github··on They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45 (1955)
It is disheartening that a person such as yourself (looked at your bio) would draw these false equivalences between radicalism on the right and left. Four years ago these concepts would not have even remotely been part of your vocabulary, but now you sort of lay down and accept it as "we're screwed two ways over?" This is exactly the kind of psychological creep eluded to in the article.
pcj-github··on Guido van Rossum joins Microsoft
Not taking anything away from GVR, but I bet he does not pass leetcode medium/hards in time allotted without specifically practicing these for a while. I could be wrong.
