paulnechifor··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
That's the case for protected classes. I just think it should be expanded.

It shouldn't be that way if media companies weren't coordinating behind the scenes to ban stuff together. But given that it's happening, it's better to have more freedom.

:) Political opinions are more well-defined? At least political opinions are in realm of reality.
paulnechifor··on Poland Justice Minister announces online freedom of speech bill
As an individual, when your speech is banned, it's all the same whether it's by an authoritarian government or by private companies.

That's exactly the argument for GDPR is. If an American megacorp doesn't want to respect the rights of non Americans then it shouldn't be allowed to profit at all from them. You can't just ban some and profit from the rest.

The freedom of individuals is more important than the freedom of corporations.

When the freedom of people to speak clashes with the freedom of corporations to not allow that speech, it's better to side with more speech (i.e. the side of the people).

It was coordinated behind locked doors with Google and Apple which are competitors.

All companies shutting them down without so much as a hearing in court will probably lead them to build parallel societies.

AWS's response was based on its legal right to shut down every customer it is biased against. Nothing was adjudicated in court.

Free speech approved by media giants. Everything else will be blockaded.

Political opinions should be a protected class (certainly more than religious opinions).

A message on Twitter:

> Someone take this clown out NOW! #assassinatetrump utter evil this man! #DonaldTrump

I’m on Twitter and it seems like this stuff is not uncommon there and since they are a huge company it seems like it wouldn't be tough to moderate it.

I consider myself to be a proponent of free speech, but I also think you are crazy if you don’t put limits on it.

Americans sure like this bad faith argument.

If it looks like a duck and it quacks like a duck...

If you're free to communicate anything on public owned spaces on the internet but there are no public owned spaces on the internet, then you're not free to communicate on the internet.

You've privatized censorship and still call yourself a free country.

That's not how it works. The decision was entirely political. Twitter is full of assassination calls but it's in no danger of getting banned: https://twitter.com/hashtag/assassinatetrump .

There are tweets from 2016 calling for Trump's assassination. When is Apple going to take down the Twitter app?

Here's just a search I did now: https://twitter.com/hashtag/assassinatetrump

Humor aside, intercourse and discourse are synonyms.

Although, intercourse is often used as short for "sexual intercourse".

But you are pretty much asking for that joke (like when you still use "ejaculate" with the "blurt out" meaning).

I guess that's part of the plan, give it for free and make it indispensable and then reap the rewards. Feels like a drug operation. :(

You might be living in a bubble if you think HN is alt-right. Trump got 46.9 % of the vote. He has nowhere near that level of support here.

> I'd genuinely like clarity on why it's considered a matter of civil liberty to develop whatever you want and force Apple to distribute it on their store?

Some value the civil liberties of individuals more than that of corporations.

paulnechifor··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
I started watching The Wire recently expecting a very dry show that's difficult to understand but I found it gripping from the start. The characters felt real and the world very fucked up and interesting.

Season 2 was good, but I didn't understand why they kept the drug dealers plot on ice. It seemed like filler.

By season 3 it turned into every other TV show where characters are just tools used to express a story rather real people.

I stopped watching a few episodes into season 4 because I couldn't be bothered to care.

I would understand the heaps of praise The Wire gets if it were limited to season 1 (maybe 2 as well), but the reset doesn't seem that good.

> "I don't have one" is an acceptable answer to why you're not wearing a mask.

I haven't worn a mask twice. Once because I forgot it and once because I just forgot to put it on.

If "I don't have one" isn't an acceptable excuse what am I supposed to do: produce one out of thin air? It's not like they give out free ones if you forget. There are so many signs now that they're basically invisible. If I'm fined for not wearing it I'll stop wearing it entirely.

In middle school I often had to reset my plugged-in 12-hour alarm clock at night because I would switch plugs for some reason.

I noticed a pattern that sometimes my alarm would refuse to ring in the morning but would ring at 8 at night.

I eventually noticed that it only happened when I stayed up late and reset the time/alarm at midnight and figured out that my clock was broken because it thought that 11 PM is followed by 12 AM.

It was more than a decade until I found out that it was correct.
