paulintrognon··on Cypress: Fast, easy, and reliable testing for anything that runs in a browser

Yes you can, by using it.only(): https://docs.cypress.io/guides/core-concepts/writing-and-org...

paulintrognon··on Always leave the code better than you found it
The funny thing is, is leaving the land "the way it would have been if left alone" better? In many cases, it is debatable.

In New Zealand, there are many invasive species of animals and trees. Should they interfere and try to remove the invasive species? Or you should they "leave it alone" and let the pine trees take over all native plant species? (the same is happening in the french Alpes where pine trees are invading a lot of land).

paulintrognon··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
Sorry if that was not clear, I was replying to i_am_new_here, who is not in Iran.
paulintrognon··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
> If you go to mixed classes, like me, then there are a lot of girls, which have zero interest in you (but have some "older" boyfriend) and constantly are turned off by you and look down on you.

This is because in a lot of western countries we still have a strong culture of differiencing the way boys and girls are educated. For example, they are seperated from preschool, and expected to play with different toys. Experiments in "gender neutral" preschools show kids tends to play more with kids from the other gender compared to other preschools.[0]

paulintrognon··on Better disposable coffee cups can be made with waste from sugar cane
Disposable items should be one of our most wanted enemies. What about reusable cups like mugs? You should then be expected to BYOC everywhere. Yes that would mean a lot of education and changes of mentallities and that's not going to happen anytime soon unless we pass laws for that kind of thing. And we totally should, IMHO.

(edit: removed the part in which I stated that burning bagasse is clean energy as I want the discussion to be focused on my first point)

paulintrognon··on Metatrends shaping the next decade
This seems completely disconnected from reality. There is not even one mention of "climate change".

> And as the world’s poorest countries are also the world’s sunniest, the democratization of both new and traditional storage technologies will grant energy abundance to those already bathed in sunlight.

I would love to have that kind of optimism...

paulintrognon··on Parsing the Infamous Japanese Postal CSV
Off topic but I got curious about the Kopyleft mention at the bottom of the article. I was familiar with the notion of Copyleft, but not with the variant with a "K" ; so I googled it and found this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Anti-Wikipedianism

> One of the main sources of Anti-Wikipedianism is the radical far copyLeft (also referred to as Kopyleft, with the Communist K, i.e. Das Kapital). They expect Wikipedia to forbid content from being used for commercial purposes.

But on the article, it is written "Do as you like.". So I am a bit confused. Can we really do "as we like", or can we use this content for commercial purpuses..?

paulintrognon··on 2020's fastest-rising tech jobs? Programming language PHP leads the way
I have used quite a few ORMs in JS and in PHP, and Laravel's ORM is really one if the best, if not the best.
paulintrognon··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
Well, if Brendan Eich stayed CEO of Mozilla, maybe we would now have a kind of firefox/brave mixed browser.

But instead, we can choose between Firefox, and Brave. 2 competitors for Chrome, from which users can choose. So, in the end, maybe it was for the best?

paulintrognon··on Belarus opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova 'snatched from street' in Minsk
I am browsing from France, and I just get a blank page. But I ctrl+refreshed the page and it's loading fine now.

I guess I visited the site in the past and had some old cache that crashed the site...

paulintrognon··on Belarus opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova 'snatched from street' in Minsk
True question: why is it on the second page of HN despite score? Is it because political? It's some kind of "flagged but not quite" system?
paulintrognon··on 84-Year-Old Gamer Has More Than 900k ‘Grandkids’
I recently heard a podcast in which a disabled lady, 76 years old, talked about how she played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In real life, she could hardly move, so it was her way of going for a walk. She would wandered arround in the woods, or climbed mountains, just to enjoy the sceneries. It helped her cope through her disablily. I thought it was a wonderful way of using a game. :)
paulintrognon··on 84-Year-Old Gamer Has More Than 900k ‘Grandkids’
Or we can just be gratefull there's a solution for everyone's tastes instead of fighting about who's opinion is best :)
paulintrognon··on 84-Year-Old Gamer Has More Than 900k ‘Grandkids’
Thanks for that hidden feature. And there's no ads aswell! Do you know what is the difference in the algorithm? They just count "old users" votes? How long do you need to have an account for to be considered old?
paulintrognon··on Why I Actively Discourage Online Tooling like jwt.io and Online JSON Validators

paulintrognon··on After 48 years, Democrats endorse nuclear energy in platform
It's not one or the other. Renewables on their own can't work. They need to be paired with another energy source. This is where Nuclear (or coal or else) comes useful.

paulintrognon··on After 48 years, Democrats endorse nuclear energy in platform
Guess how many people realistically died from Fukushima radiations? Likely zero [1]. People died from the tsunami, and from the irrationnal panic of the evacuation of people from hospital. Read the Wikipedia article and check the sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima_Daiichi_nuclear_disa...

paulintrognon··on After 48 years, Democrats endorse nuclear energy in platform
> Renewable energy sources have zero fuel costs.

That's not true. It costs fuel to mine the resourses needed, to build the equipments, to install them, to maintain them. The IPCC states that globally, nuclear power emits _less_ greenhouse gases than hydro and solar, and emits about the same as wind. [1]

paulintrognon··on Gallup: 81% of Black Americans Want Police to Retain Local Presence
I believe what one want is not no police, but rather a non-racist, fair, police. Maybe I missed something, but imho the protests are not for the removal of police, but rather for a police you can trust and rely on, regardless of your look.

Because now the top reply of his comment is a summary of the article. So, not that useless of a comment

paulintrognon··on Apple does not keep the 30% commission on a refund
Maybe a tag in the original title could also help? Something like: "[FAKENEWS] When a customer refunds your paid app, Apple doesn’t refund the 30% cut"

People not reading the comments will then have a way of knowing this is false information.

paulintrognon··on Apple does not keep the 30% commission on a refund
> We are in the post-truth era indeed.

Was it really better before? The cognitive biases behind fake news are not knew. Maybe there were there from the beginning, but we are just getting better at spotting them?

paulintrognon··on Firefox 79
I don't get what benefit they get from "lock[ing] and limit[ing] conversation to collaborators" on such issues. Why would you want to deliberately cut valuable user feedback? I mean I can't even put a "thumb up" on the issue!
paulintrognon··on Has GitHub been down more since its acquisition by Microsoft?
Also, according to the article itself, "[it] could be all a part of coordinated effort to be more transparent about their service status".
paulintrognon··on Turn recipe websites into plain text
Your app looks awesome. I've been thinking about a way of putting all my recipies in one place for a while, well, this looks like the kind of place I've been looking for.
