paul_milovanov··on The Collapse of the FDA
Vinay Prasad, the new FDA chief medical and scientific director, is an extremely sensible guy and a co-author of a great 2013 book on evidence-based medicine targeting the lay audience (Ending Medical Reversal)

Here's an EconTalk podcast with the other co-author, Adam Cifu, talking about the book. https://www.econtalk.org/adam-cifu-on-ending-medical-reversa...

The NYT article presents his COVID vaccine policy changes as yet more crazy MAGA shit, whereas in fact he holds nuanced views, based on up-to-date review of available evidence. He has published in NEJM and elsewhere on the topic:

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsb2506929

A short take on the above from Adam Cifu, whom I respect greatly: https://www.sensible-med.com/p/prasad-makary-and-an-evidence...

With all of that, I suspect that the rumours of FDA's death are greatly exaggerated.

paul_milovanov··on Many Climate 'Solutions' Are Dead Ends or Niches and Should Be Ignored
Wind/solar don't produce baseload power absent storage. If you can't scale storage proportionately to wind/solar, you can't compare w/s to nuclear because baseload and non-baseload supply are not mutually substitutable.
paul_milovanov··on Don't insult me with your pricing (2019)
Well! That's an honest-to-God discount then!

$1.00 + 30% = 1.00 + 0.30 = $1.30

then

$1.30 - 30% = 1.30 - 0.13*3 = $0.91

PROFIT!

paul_milovanov··on Julia 1.6 Highlights
looks like they're just multiplying two 100x100 matrices, once? (maybe I'm reading it wrong?) in Julia, runtime would be dominated by compilation + startup time.

A fair comparison with C++ would be to at least include the compilation/linking time into the time reported.

Ditto for Java or any JVM language (you'd have JVM startup cost but that doesn't count the compilation time for bytecode).

Generally, for stuff (scientific computing benchmarks) like this you want to run a lot of computation precisely to avoid stuff like this (i.e you want to fairly allow the cost of compilation & startup amortize)

paul_milovanov··on Protester shot in chest by live police round during Hong Kong protests
I agree that it's quite clear that environmental externalities per dollar GDP (and per dollar of exports) are massive. At the same time consider that as median incomes increase, marginal utility of clean(ish) environment vs income increases, public pressure mounts, and countries do tackle environmental externalities.

That's the story of every country's industrial development since the British industrial revolution. Bread comes first, clean water and air come second. For rich western countries to forget that and demand that China and India put environment ahead of pulling people out of poverty is myopic at best and, realistically, highly hypocritical.

paul_milovanov··on Protester shot in chest by live police round during Hong Kong protests
What are the specific "actions of the CCP" that have actually occurred to date that supposedly justify violence from the protesters?
paul_milovanov··on Protester shot in chest by live police round during Hong Kong protests
That carbon emitted is largely from the manufacturing of cheap products that you consumed. Western countries have offshored both manufacturing and the associated pollution to a country more concerned about pulling its people out of poverty than about its environment. The ocean plastic is partly from these industrial processes and partly because western countries have exported most of their plastic waste to China for more than a decade.

Also, according to this, China's per capita emissions are half that of the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_di...

paul_milovanov··on Apple is regressing to their 1990s identity
Pet peeve: company market cap cannot and should not be compared to GDP of a country. The best comparable is the "Gross Value Added" GVA = delta in EBITDA + employee compensation, as outlined here by Matt Klein in FT Alphaville:

https://ftalphaville.ft.com/2015/01/28/2103622/if-apple-were...

Others have recently estimated Apple GVA to be 0.5% of US GDP and 0.15% of world GDP.
