paul_grisham··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
The saddest thing is people can only think about this topic in economic terms. People mock the "line must go up" thinking in capitalism, yet become enraged when you question this thinking with regards to migrants and the economy. That long term the economic benefits are marginal to non-existent is almost irrelevant.

But racial distinctions are. So they're relevant in every case, whereas class distinctions are not.
paul_grisham··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
Whites are naive thinking about melting pots and letting go of their identity while other groups do not.

Cost of living has risen significantly since the immigration and nationality act in 1965. California has seen the most immigration has one of the highest costs of living. Income inequality has increased drastically. Denmark's recent statistics showed a net tax burden on migrant families, even after successive generations. Cultural cohesion has been destroyed in America to the point people actually think there never was a dominant culture in America, it was always values based. It's not even a country anymore, just a giant corporation. Diversity is supposedly an unquestionable good, yet every statistic shows people are more isolated than they have ever been.

Why not? Hispanics have La Raza, they have a concept of racial unity Americans do not.
paul_grisham··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
The % of the population who are immigrants is the highest it's ever been. You now have signs in 2 languages. The American south will be integrated into Hispanic culture, not the other way around.

Common sense, everyone knows it except the white liberal middle class. Why do prison populations group themselves by race and not class?
paul_grisham··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
White Americans didn't integrate into Native American cultures, so I don't see your point.
paul_grisham··on The world is watching in disbelief as France tears itself apart
They haven't integrated and they never will. There were leaks showing Amazon's union busting efforts for Whole Foods - the more diverse a city, the less likely locations there were to unionize.

People know adding a lane to a highway doesn't reduce traffic but think adding more apartments reduces rents. The solution to homelessness is clear - arrest them.

I'm a landlord and have been giving my tenants the option to tip. It's well deserved for all the extra work making sure they have a nice place to stay.

The Vision Pro is just combining a screen with horse blinders. Absolutely depressing product and laughable that companies pretend that these technologies bring people closer together.

>Not joking. Checkout VR porn. Then it hits you. Holy shit this is the future of media and entertainment. Something about perspective in VR gives a human touch of interactivity not possible with other media forms.

One of the most pathetic things I've ever heard. Gushing about immersive cuckoldry.

paul_grisham··on iOS 17 automatically removes tracking parameters from links you click on
Apple keeps focusing the privacy discussion on things like 3rd party trackers, since this doesn't affect their business model in any way but gives them good PR. They do nothing against the more serious issue of government surveillance, they even let the government run their iCloud servers in China. Their interests align with consumers and they align with governments even more.

paul_grisham··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
How is this feasible at all? Not only all the tech for the AR device to be light and have decent battery life, but the software you describe would need optical recognition of what you're looking at, then match that to the manual of the object to tell you what the pins do. All on a device with significant size and heat constraints.

paul_grisham··on Performance excuses debunked
>Yes, there are definitely people who argue that performance never matters.

Never seen one, post an example.

>half–second loading time on a webpage loses them a lot of money.

I didn't say milliseconds don't matter, I said it was diminishing returns. The size of those returns depend on the business. For Facebook it matters because users have other options to use their attention on such as Youtube and other social media. A B2B SaaS such as some CI/CD tool can care less about it because their users have lock in, they can't just switch tab to a different CI/CD tool and start using it immediately. So the threshold of acceptable performance depends entirely on the use case, which the author keeps ignoring to fight strawman absolutist arguments instead.

paul_grisham··on Performance excuses debunked
> But even if that turns out to be true, it still means programmers have to care about performance!

Who is he even talking to at this point? He's arguing that performance has more than 0% relevance to software, which no-one on disagrees with.

>claims there is no argument to be had, and that performance somehow won’t matter anywhere in a product lifecycle

No-one says performance never matters. People disagree on what performance merits optimization. A 5s to 1s page load improvement is massive, a .5s to .1s improvement starts hitting diminishing returns in user experience.

paul_grisham··on Performance excuses debunked
Obviously performance matters, it's just a question of opportunity cost. The article just takes some absolute statements about performance not mattering and argues against them, which is obvious and pointless. They ignore that the benefit/cost ratio for Facebook's performance improvements is vastly different to that of the average software company with tens of employees and some SaaS CRUD app. Their own example of Uber's app rewrite due to their previous architecture not being good enough is an example against their point - they got to where they were with imperfect architecture, then later fixed it once the opportunity cost tradeoff made sense.
