Cofounder, CEO at Care Weather

We're making satellites that rapidly track wind over the entire ocean. NASA's head of oceanography said everyone will want to buy our data.

Weather satellites are disjointed. We iterate on our satellites weekly at 1/1000th the cost. We're aiming to develop the world's first cohesive weather information system.

patrickwalton··on Sweden Solar System
This is so cool! I've wanted to make something like this for years. I did the math for using Spaceport America as the sun and Pluto would have been as far as Wyoming.
patrickwalton··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas!!
patrickwalton··on Copyright claim against Tolkien estate backfires on LOTR fanfiction author
He was just 18 years ahead of his time...smh. 2040 is when Tolkien is slated for public domain.
patrickwalton··on TACF is no longer supporting development of D58 American chestnut trees
I became really interested in this topic after having my first roast chestnuts a couple years ago! Some of the interesting things I learned: - Chestnut deforestation due to blight was a substantial portion of global deforestation in the early 20th century (IIRC half in 1920s and 1930s). - Chestnuts were such a staple that they were considered poor people food in America. Some lamented that chestnut products (including chestnut flours) seemed to be all the general stores carried. - The majority of all wood construction in early America was chestnut.

Wild that such a central part of American society vanished and I didn't even know beyond "chestnuts roasting on an open fire". Makes me wonder what other parts of our lives and culture will be lost with extinctions caused by climate change.

patrickwalton··on Skyfield: Elegant Astronomy for Python
Skyfield is so well maintained and documented that we actually use it to process tracking data for our own satellites and plot additional orbit parameters like beta angle, altitude, etc.
patrickwalton··on 15 years ago, I helped design Google Maps
Same problem with elevation markings on terrain layer.
patrickwalton··on Trying to make sense of why Otis exploded en route to Acapulco
Yep, I commented here that my company, Care Weather, is working on that problem. Goal is to provide hourly updates of ocean surface winds.

patrickwalton··on Trying to make sense of why Otis exploded en route to Acapulco
> Otis intensified so quickly that it basically outran the ability to measure how intense it actually was.

We're working on this problem at Care Weather (www.careweather.com). Current wind sensing satellites only measure ocean surface winds once per day. They're too expensive for governments to build additional satellites for more frequent refresh. We're lowering their cost by three orders of magnitude and launching a constellation to get hourly updates.

patrickwalton··on Ask HN: Best tools for self-authoring books in 2023?
For publishing, I've found Barnes and Noble Press to be incredibly cheap and useable.
patrickwalton··on Shrinkflation Tracker
We saw shrinkflation with our apartments when they went from a central dumpster to expecting everyone in an 8-unit complex to line up cans on the road
patrickwalton··on NASA's Software Catalog offers hundreds of new software programs for free
There are some that are free to most people, but not all are.

The satellite industry very commonly uses NASA Debris Assessment Software to prove to the FCC that they won't create space debris.

patrickwalton··on A worm that survived 46,000 years in permafrost wows scientists
Sounds like the beginning of the space horror film "Life"
patrickwalton··on Satellite guided to assisted crash in Atlantic in world first
I think the other "first" was that the system wasn't designed for controlled re-entry. They just used re-purposed the orbit maintenance propulsion system.
patrickwalton··on Amazon duped millions of consumers into enrolling in Prime, US FTC says
I saw this on my account actually! One day I was a family user on my brother's plan, the next I was a prime subscriber without my consent, using my payment method on file. I reached out to class action lawyers but no one responded. Really good to see the FTC taking action.

patrickwalton··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
I have type 1 narcolepsy and the prospect of being able to work laying horizontal in bed while my muscles are 90% shut off from a sleep attack is worth at least $3k.
patrickwalton··on Ask HN: How to upgrade my personal project database from Notion
I'm trying to get some general knowledge of how databases are typically managed to avoid staying in Notion workaround longer than I have to. I'm just unfamiliar with other solutions so I don't have anything to compare against. I guess it would have been better to frame the question as what would be a good alternative to learn as a general starting point.
patrickwalton··on Ask HN: How to upgrade my personal project database from Notion
I'm just using notion_client, a Python wrapper for the Notion API which says it's a Python version of the reference JavaScript SDK. https://pypi.org/project/notion-client/

Would sqlite or postgres still be the right place to start if I don't have an http interface to start off of?

patrickwalton··on Blood–brain barrier opening with ultrasound device in patients with glioblastoma
I wonder if this will have implications for other brain conditions, like Parkinson's, depression, or narcolepsy where some protein or hormone is missing from the brain and can't be delivered across the BBB.
patrickwalton··on The money spent on lotteries doesn’t go to the park
That said, Bryce canyon is stunning in the middle of December (if there's snow).

patrickwalton··on Show HN: A 15 min daily stretch routine for desk workers
This is great!

I have a couple points of feedback:

If I accidentally click out, there's no way to recover my place. A forward arrow or option to start at any pose by clicking in the preview would fix that.

Some training poses would be helpful for those of us who can't touch the floor in triangle pose or can't maintain an upright torso in garland pose

patrickwalton··on Mathematicians discover shape that can tile a wall and never repeat
I would love this, but also it would be way more expensive to tile, because you can't manufacture a consistent sheet of tiles. No two sheets would be alike!
patrickwalton··on Milk, cheese and ice cream without the cow has entered the marketplace
Brave robot is an ice cream brand with lab-grown whey and it's quite good. I haven't tried any cheese with lab-grown casein yet.
patrickwalton··on Nobody needs a faster dishwasher – solve real user needs
I've long wanted some kind of miniaturized version of a cafeteria dishwasher where you put dirty dishes in one side and clean dishes come out the other a few seconds later. I want my kitchen to stay clean and it would be so nice for everyone to be able to clean and put away their dish right after the meal.
patrickwalton··on Show HN: I made a super simple iOS app to track expenses
The design is surprising similar to Qubemoney.com's app, which is incredible and is bank and envelope budgeting in one.
patrickwalton··on What the ancient bog bodies knew
The "bog of war" sounds like a real world "dead marshes" from Lord of the Rings.
