I started with basic lessons on Codecademy to learn the basic concepts and jumped between reading books and researching concepts and building small projects. I feel like I got the best of both worlds. When I hit a concept I didn't understand or needed clarity on, I went and researched the underlying fundamentals.
I've seen developers that have gone top down and they struggle with basic programming logic because they don't have the fundamental knowledge. On the flip side, I can't imagine studying CS and learning all the CS fundamentals without going ahead and building stuff the whole time.
1. Ease of building and distributing packages with Electron-Builder. I'm able to build for all three operating systems on my Mac, took a few hours to set up.
2. Access to the vast NPM library for all sorts of functionality.
3. Ability to use CSS libraries for styling. I'm no designer so it saves me some time. Collate uses Bulma for styling.
From what I've seen, users are more than happy to have an application that solves their need no matter what it's created in. Most people don't really think about file sizes, or the fact that Chromium is packaged with Node, they just want their problem solved without visual or performance hiccups.
If it wasn't for Electron, Collate would be a very different application or non-existant. I think people need to look at Electron as opening the door to more possibilities.
Full disclosure, I created it! I made it because there was nothing comparable on the market. Cross-platform, plain text with a powerful markdown editor. I've since added a rich text editor, web clipper and a workflowy style outline note type. I'm also planning on adding git support soon.
I have a similar problem where I have a side project but can't really quit my job and work full time on it.
Also 0.2.4 should drop in a few days that fixes a ton of bugs. You can follow along on our roadmap here: https://trello.com/b/Mk4OWPJo
Edit: Ha! Squashed the js that was causing the scroll jacking. Thanks for the bug report ;)

Thanks for the kind words!
No mobile apps yet. I know, this is a huge sore point for myself as well. It's definitely on the road map and I'd like to get the desktop app stable and some more features ironed out before I dive into the mobile app realm.
So one would download an image, attach it to the note, and then they could right click on the attachment and click insert into body or something like that.
Another idea was to create a web clipper 'note type' and expand past just simple markdown notes. Note types would be for example, a web clipper note type which would download a webpage for offline consumption as a note. Or a list note type which has check boxes, list items, etc. One could potentially be a gallery or image note type for attaching and viewing image.
I'm still thinking through the idea and implementation but it's one of the features I'd really like to implement. I think it would make note taking way more flexible than just markdown.
It's built off the [Collate data format](https://github.com/Collateapp/collate-file-format) which is just plaintext markdown files with YAML encoded metadata. One of the underlying principals of Collate is that you should be able to traverse your notes in a file browser and edit them in a text editor manually if for whatever reason Collate doesn't work for you. The current iteration of Collate is exactly that, and I'm looking to build on top of that going forward!
In the future, I'd like to integrate git into the application and have a simplified conflict resolution where a a diff would be shown and you're given a accept this version or this other version.
I'm glad that Collate hits the same use cases for you as it did for me!
Git is appealing to me personally because it's just so ubiquitous and there are plenty of free services out there to use.
I would be absolutely flattered and would support any Collate-compatible software. The file format itself is open and MIT licensed and any contributions and discussions would be welcome!
I put a lot of thought into the file format and I'm really glad you're excited about it! Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the format or if anything is unclear at hello@collate.rocks.
Zipping is a great idea, I didn't even consider that. I'll definitely look into it.
I've mainly been considering trying to integrate Git into the application for both version control and the remote features. It would auto add, commit, push and pull from remote and allow people to use a git repo they host or an already available service like github or gitlab. It would try to be as seamless and out of the way as possible.
It would be quite a bit of work and I'm interested on hearing what others have to say before I dive into that rabbit hole.
Note: I'm not affiliated with them, just using them on my latest project.
For a terminal emulator, I set up Conemu (https://conemu.github.io/) which is pretty swell.
I hit a road block when I need to use vagrant for my development environment. I need to hop into powershell to fire up vagrant as virtualization doesn't seem to work in WSL. Otherwise it seems to work for most of my use cases.
I live in and was born and raised in NYC around large Asian communities, so I feel like I'm fortunate to grow up learning about my parent's culture and where they're from but at the same time I'm a child of a completely different culture. I often find myself feeling torn between the two. I'm not Chinese, my birth certificate proves I'm American, however I often don't feel like I can represent myself as either.
My fiance is White American and the glances and stares we get when we're in more homogeneous parts of the country are pretty telling.
I also use it at work and really like having the ci system built in.
I want to work on projects but I can't find any ideas that could potentially become a business. Where do you look? Who do you talk to?
