patleeman··on I Built a Shed (2020)
Very cool. I love these DIY office setups.

The author mentioned organizing material transport by figuring out what would fit in his car. I would highly recommend just renting a flatbed truck from home depot to transport your materials home if they don't fit in your car. Its usually something like $20 to rent for an hour.

Also I wonder if the author has any plans to heat/cool the space. Seems like they might live in a temperate area. I'd would probably just install one of those DIY mini-split units to heat/cool the office if necessary.

patleeman··on An Ode to My Linter
Hm, HN seems to keep stripping the path off my url submissions. Here is the link: https://patricklee.nyc/blog/20211230_an_ode_to_my_linter/

The ode:

Oh my dearest linter, adding squiggly lines under my mistake. Gently teaching me why I'm wrong. How do I fix it? Some help would be nice. You autocorrected it! Thank you twice!

The documentation is right at hand: "you idiot, don't add an ampersand!" But I think you might be wrong, my dear linter this is an edge case! Well then I'll just have to add a little comment to disable that tiny check on line 35. I'm sorry my linter, you'll have to abide.

patleeman··on My Walking Desk Setup
Thanks for posting this. I could have sworn I pasted this into the submission box!
patleeman··on Show HN: A tool to send push notifications to your phone, written in Go
I found that telegram works pretty well to get notifications from my personal server. Its pretty easy to set up a channel and bot.
patleeman··on Ask HN: How do you stay active while working from home?
I set up a treadmill desk and have started walking 10,000 steps a day while working. Usually not a problem since most of my work doesn’t require flow state. I found a walking speed of approx 2.1 kph allows me to concentrate while moving.

I also have a squat rack, bench, barbells and do power lifting at home though that fell off in the last year. Goal is to lose weight, walk more, eat less, and lift moderately since I’m on a cut.

patleeman··on Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation (2019)
Fair. In my mind, easier in the sense that past the initial script I'm just writing markdown for future checklists. It's also compatible with existing markdown documentation.
patleeman··on Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation (2019)
One could pretty easily create a tool that takes Github Flavored Markdown and interactively displays the text and make checkbox items appear one at a time in a manner similar to this. Would be much more useful and easier to configure.
patleeman··on Long-dormant Bitcon wallet comes online
Check out Ben Carlson’s podcast Animal Spirits, it’s quite interesting.

Owning individual assets doesn’t preclude you from having most of your portfolio in index funds. The trick is to buy companies you believe in and just hold it. Don’t check the price every day, just forget about it.

patleeman··on Akamai Edge DNS was down
I just teared up
patleeman··on The startup that made air conditioning units look cool
It definitely is.
patleeman··on Notion's page load and navigation times just got faster
I wish this was heavier on the details. SQLite on the electron apps seem easy enough to implement but I’m curious how they made the switch on the browser?
patleeman··on Investigating how the New York Times A/B tests their headlines
Is the headline testing some sort of multi-arm bandit system or a/b tests that are updated manually?

It seems like MAB would be the ideal approach for something like headlines.

patleeman··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
I think its the combination of the extremely high number of short shares (71M) vs shares outstanding (69M), the stock hitting an all time low in March ($2.57), poor public sentiment ("its the next blockbuster"), and then the addition of Ryan Cohen (a "Rockstar" entrepreneur) all making for a really epic turn around underdog story.
patleeman··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
RC also bought his 13% stake on his own. Why would he agree to dilute his own shares when GME has cash in the bank and doesn't need to raise?
patleeman··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
I too have a position and its been such a crazy ride. I started following it around $15 for just the sheer curiosity.

Its funny, I went through all the bear arguments at first, but as I kept reading and digging in deeper, the bull thesis became apparant. RC signing on really sealed the deal for me and $GME is now my largest position.

patleeman··on Trading halted as U.S. stocks plummet
I'm pretty sure these need to be hit consecutively.
patleeman··on A Navy Seal's Semester at Yale, at Age 52
I totally agree.

I'm a graduate of Columbia's School of General Studies, alongside many veterans and other non-traditional students. I'm not a veteran, but I had many friends that had served. We had classes with younger students from Columbia College and Barnard and I felt like we brought a different perspective to the classes. I learned a lot from my fellow classmates and I feel so fortunate that I had the opportunity.

patleeman··on Ask HN: What software/app do you wish would exist?
Try note plan. https://noteplan.co/

I’m not associated but tried it and liked the features.

patleeman··on Mathematicians are hoarding a type of Japanese chalk (2015)
You taught me Linear Algebra back in 2013/2014 and I remember you were telling us about this amazing Japanese chalk you were using.

To your credit it was quite good, and produced some really great writing. I wished my other math professors had your passion. Half the time I could barely see the writing on the board after the first erasing.

patleeman··on Startup Off-sites – Why They Matter And How I Run Them
Agreed. I couldn't help but groan while reading through this post. I enjoy the company of my co-workers but would not appreciate having to spend 5 days with them in a rental house away from my family and comforts of home.

I get the idea of having a team vacation or group outing, but mixing in workshops, forced cross team "collaboration" exercises, "role playing", and lectures on "thinking big" would absolutely just kill my morale.

Sure, company culture is important, but if it's built like this you can count me out.

patleeman··on Firefox 64 Released
For 4, you’re able to hide the Firefox tab bar with some css in userChrome.css now. I’m using tree style tabs and have hidden the default tabs as my daily driver.
patleeman··on Ultimate Hacking Keyboard
I'm typing on one right now.

I'm a fan of split keyboards and like it more than my ergodox.

patleeman··on It's Time for a DevTools for Designers
Lately I've been working with designers through Sketch + Zeplin and its been pretty great. I like being able to pull CSS and SVG/PNG assets out of the tool and it speeds up mockup to built site quite a bit.

What worries me about a tool that outputs html + css is then having to take that markup and integrate it with whatever client side framework or server side template engine so that its consistent with the rest of the code base, follows set code and style standards, is fully responsive and adheres to whatever arbitrary standards are set by the dev team.

I just don't have a lot of faith that a tool can be flexible enough to output markup that can then be used effectively. I imagine a developer will need to massage it into place in order to get it to conform well and by that point it might have just been easier for a competent web developer to build it from scratch. For prototyping or building out functional mock ups, it could be quite useful, but if the end goal is to hand a developer some markup and stylesheets and then let them build out the business logic, then things could get messy pretty quickly.

It's a good dream though and I hope that one day we can let designers do more of the view layer work but I'm cautiously optimistic.

patleeman··on California bullet train cost surges by $2.8B
Usually in larger stations and it is really infrequent. It's usually a bunch of patrol cops with a plastic folding table and they set it up in the station outside the turnstiles. They'll "randomly" select people and check their bags. I've seen them in Queens (Roosevelt/74th) and other random stations.
patleeman··on California bullet train cost surges by $2.8B
I take the train daily. I've only ever seen random cops walking around, setting up bag check tables in stations and infrequently armed swat guys on patrol. They never stop people and are more there as a show of force. The subway is no where near how awful the airports are.
patleeman··on We made a terrible song then bought Spotify streams for it as proof
That's some hot fire.
patleeman··on Ask HN: Where do you shop for PCs?
Just a heads up, NCIX has filed for bankruptcy.

patleeman··on Zeta Global acquires Disqus (YC S07)
There was this incident I documented a while back as well.

patleeman··on Ask HN: How Wordpress can help startups/MVPs?
It depends on the SAAS and what they are trying to do. Do you have an example?

If it revolves around:

1. Serving content

2. Selling things (on a small scale)

then wordpress would be a good platform. However if you're looking to build a SAAS that does more than that and requires custom models, interfacing with different technologies on the back end etc. then you're in for a world of hurt trying to conform wordpress. You're much better going with a framework like Laravel.

Wordpress is a good tool if your use case falls within the WP core or available plugin ecosystem.
