pathartl··on Embracer Games Archive is preserving 75000 video games and needs contributions
GoG makes games available for purchase, but on multiple occasions they've sold games where functionality has been stripped out, or they sell something that straight up doesn't work.
pathartl··on How Riot Games is fighting the war against video game hackers
Lol, this wasn't Windows 7 days. This was 98/XP. The real fall of multiplayer gaming is from player support of F2P and a lack of legislation against the absolute predatory gambling tactics these games use.

By the way, kernel level anti heat has been around for a LONG time. Battle Eye was introduced with Battlefield Vietnam in 2004.

pathartl··on 'OLED and LCD will die out': A MicroLED expert explains how
I don't see how LEDs are going to be that much better than OLED other than less risk of a higher sustained brightness. I got a QD OLED panel 6 months ago and have basically paid it no mind and there's not even a hint of burn in. It does a pretty good job managing the brightness at idle without being distracting, in that when I leave it on accidentally for 4 hours at a static desktop it lowers to 25% brightness to save itself.

I also have an early generation 65" B series LG OLED. I wouldn't say there's burn in per se, but you can notice some inconsistencies at 50% gray. Even still it's more uniform that any LCD display I've seen.

pathartl··on New Windows 11 trick lets you bypass Microsoft Account requirement
QuickBooks online is a completely different beast compared to QuickBooks. Then there are people who are still operating on stuff like Sage... And that's just accounting software.
pathartl··on Donkey Kong champion wins defamation case against Australian YouTuber Karl Jobst

pathartl··on The April Fools joke that might have got me fired
I did something similar in 7th grade, with the extra naughtiness of charging my peers 50 cents or so to drop the basic Windows games like pinball and Ski Free into their home drive. I created a couple of joke files in my favorite teachers' directories and then notified the IT admin before someone more nefarious saw what I was doing.

That admin became my mentor and is now a lifelong friend.

pathartl··on Win98-quickinstall: A framework and installer to quickly install Windows 98
Yeah, working on rebuilding the site. The GitHub and documentation sites should be the most up to date information: https://github.com/LANCommander/LANCommander https://docs.lancommander.app/
pathartl··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
That's exactly what I was trying to convey with my hyperbolic statement. I remember when I first moved to the city after being on well water for the first 25 years of my life and being put off by the chlorinated smell of the water. Now when I go back to visit family I'm put off by the well water... Especially when taking a shower.
pathartl··on Win98-quickinstall: A framework and installer to quickly install Windows 98
I actually dev a project called LANCommander which can be used as a sef-hosted digital game distribution platform ala Steam, Epic Games, etc. It has built in support for redistributables. What i would actually do is make the DOSBox/Win98 combo a redist and then have the individual games require that redist.

That way if you wanted to make changes like install patches on Windows or change the DOSBox config you only have to do it to the redist.

pathartl··on Win98-quickinstall: A framework and installer to quickly install Windows 98
For games like these I tend to use a base Win98 image with DOSBox and then mount the game as a separate drive, disable the Windows shell, and auto start the game.
pathartl··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
Except schools handing out toothpaste will get brought up at thousands of board meetings across the country with sensitive or bored parents claiming government overreach and misuse of budgets.
pathartl··on Utah becomes first US state to ban fluoride in its water
Should we not treat water at all? Should we instead all like off ground water or rivers and lakes?

pathartl··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
I'm a Windows fan (I actually really like 11) so I'm a bit biased, but I just dove back into macOS since 2014 and the settings app is truly terrible. The built in search barely works and the layout is so damn confusing. God forbid I install some remote desktop software, now I have to go to accessibility settings 5 simes and approve some permission that is strategically buried for only what I can tell as a way to thwart "normies" from enabling something via obfuscation.

It would be fine if the settings available were actually useful or at least could bring me to some tool that does it better. I get no meaningful report of what's eating my batter and why every time I open my MacBook it's dead. And if I want to change the actual resolution of my display I'm given just a list of scaling options pretending to be resolutions. Oh, want to set a specific resolution or refresh rate? You have to do some stupid kinger king foo of option control something _before_ you click on this dialog. I get the criticism about the Windows settings app and legacy power tools (I think this has largely been solved anyway), at least they exist and allow me some iota of control over my computer

pathartl··on Unofficial Windows 7 Service Pack 2
11 is almost way more consistent in its UI. I'd even go as far as to say it's better than 7's.
pathartl··on Android phone will run Debian Linux soon (like some Pixels can)
I got a Pixel Fold recently, and using it makes me sad that Windows Phone got cancelled. It was absolutely ahead of its time. I would love to roll an PS that can provide three interface experiences from the same device.

pathartl··on Gene Hackman has died
I actually like Welcome to Mooseport. It's nothing special, but it's a pretty tame comedy from the start of the end of the, imo, golden comedy era.
pathartl··on No One Lives Forever (NOLF) Revival Edition
Eh, LithTech was fairly impressive for the time, but I wouldn't necessarily call it good. It is incredibly fragile. I've been working on creating a library of games that works on modern platforms. LithTech games have taken at least 3-4 times longer because of frequent crashing.
pathartl··on GenSX: OS framework for building agents and workflows with React-like components
XML is one of the few markup languages that can actually represent objects without losing integrity. The issue is that its syntax is often abused to try to make it "elegant".
pathartl··on Valve releases Team Fortress 2 code
We do, sprinkled throughout the year. Or sessions see ~20-24 people and last about 14 hours.
pathartl··on All Kindles can now be jailbroken
I moved to Kobo because I bought my partner the Kindle Oasis and just after a year the battery couldn't hold a charge. I contacted Amazon and they would only give me 10% off a new device. I only found one person on the internet who was courageous enough to open one up. The screen was epoxied to the body with no way of opening the device without destroying the screen.

So I got her a Kobo Libra H2O. Just as waterproof, significantly cheaper, and you can actually repair it. I ended up getting a Libra Colour for myself and love it.

Feels like it's built by a first year junior dev. There's a doge in the HTML in ASCII block characters as well.

Separate thought, I wonder how much it bothers Elon that the industry standardized on meta tags with "twitter" namespacing, and that will unlikely ever change.

pathartl··on Matt Mullenweg deactivates WordPress accounts of contributors planning a fork
Been following your posts since the beginning of this. We met a while ago after a Milwaukee WordCamp and I remember talking about API v2 and how WP was going to be brought into the modern era.

Honestly, the project just feels stagnant to me. I get wanting to support plugins/the community for as long as possible, but I fear not having a sensible web framework has done nothing but given credence to the common criticism that WP shouldn't be taken seriously.

From my perspective as an owner of a small open source project, Matt's comments have been petty and vindictive. I personally probably will never touch the platform again. There's too many other frameworks out there, whether you want something similar like Statamic, Grav, Drupal.. or if you want to build with an actual app framework with Laravel, ASP.NET Core, etc.

pathartl··on iTerm2 critical security release
I stepped back into macOS for the first time in ~8 years and was disappointed by Terminal. To be honest, I think Windows Terminal is much better, which feels a bit weird to say.
