patd··on Apple removes ‘Fakespot’ app from iOS App Store following Amazon request
I’m a bit confused here. ReviewMeta, the site that filtered review, was mostly making money by selling items as an Amazon seller ?

The business model was to find items people are browsing on Amazon and then find a drop shipping niche ?

patd··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
Because in practice if you make 1 million in a country, you’ll claim 1 million in expense in another country (with little to no taxes) for things like IP, trademark, etc.
patd··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
I’m in Europe. Earlier this year, I ordered from Amazon Japan, the package arrived quicker than things I had ordered earlier on a European Amazon and it was insanely well packaged.
patd··on Tim Cook’s Fortnite trial testimony was unexpectedly revealing
For the customer service part, I suppose that if the user has any issue, they'll likely go to Apple first which can't do anything and make the user experience less ideal. As of today, they can refund the user which keeps them happy.
patd··on Coinbase’s listing may break records
With Binance starting to have Tesla stock tokens, it would be funny if they started doing the same for Coinbase shares.
patd··on HSBC bans customers from buying Bitcoin-backer MicroStrategy shares
Overvalued, maybe. But comparing last year production of cars is in my opinion a bad metrics to compare Tesla to other automakers.

First Tesla is growing fast so that $50k will drastically go down in the coming years.

Tesla is more vertically integrated so you have to include the valuation of all the dealerships, parts of their suppliers, the charging network, ...

And third there are the “other” businesses like the battery storage, solar roofs, software revenue, ...

So overall the numbers of cars produced is probably too simplistic to compare them.

patd··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs to travel the world, how did it go?
I didn’t quit my job but took a three months leave of absence to travel the work with my SO and our two kids (2 and 4 at the time).

It was great and we had planned to do it again in 2020 then COVID hit.

Now my kids are of compulsory school age so we need to figure out how we will do it.

patd··on Google’s parent firm is shutting down Loon connectivity project
There is a company called SpaceMobile backed by Rakuten that claims they can provide 4G from space without changing anything to existing devices.

I haven’t been able to find documentation on how it works but as they claim you can do 4G in the middle of the ocean, it can’t be ground stations.

patd··on For the first time in Europe, registrations for EVs overtook diesel
Isn't it mostly due to the fact that half of France France warms itself using electricity ?
patd··on SpotifyKeyDumper – Dump song decryption keys from the Windows Spotify client
If people do this, it only shows that the normal price is too high for many.

And I guess it’s against their ToS.

patd··on Jack Ma's Ant Group set for record $34B market debut
As a European, could you explain this a bit ? How does identity theft differ between credit and debit cards ?
patd··on Cross-Border Payments – A New Beginning
I’m a bit surprised that none of the panelists are coming from SWIFT (or Ripple) while they have the CEO of Stellar.
patd··on Quibi Is Shutting Down
They could have pivoted to people that had 5 minutes between meetings and wanted some entertainment while making a new cup of coffee. I’m pretty sure there are millions of us now.

patd··on Nikola admits prototype was rolling downhill in promotional video
I believe Tre is meant for Europe and Two is meant for the US. I suppose the American one is larger
patd··on The Fed now owns nearly 1/3 of all U.S. mortgages
You can get fixed 15 to 30 years mortgage rate in some European countries for less than 1% in some cases and 2% in most cases.
patd··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
The pandemic is the “act of god” in this analogy.
patd··on US, Taiwan seek 'like-minded' democracies in supply chain shift from China
An alternative could be to try to avoid Chinese owned companies rather than Chinese made.
patd··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
Most of your positives are more than 10 years old. In the meantime they've remove the "Don't be evil" motto, their Android/Chromebook support is very short lived, they've killed countless services people relied on, ...

I don't think Google is evil like Microsoft was in the 90s but I don't blindly trust them as I might have done in the past.

patd··on German court bans Tesla ad statements related to autonomous driving
Maybe because it’s not the same ? I don’t own a Jeep but Lane assist typically means warning the user if you drive over the line. Tesla steers by itself and more.

Adaptive Cruise Control typically works only above a given speed. Tesla’s does work at low speed too.

At least Tesla cars seem to do more than the German cars I have driven before.

patd··on Amazon’s New Competitive Advantage: Putting Its Own Products First
To your last point, to me, it feels that they try to hide their private labels. Some are named “Amazon XXX” but most are not: Solimo, Presto and countless clothing brands.

I mostly realise that they are Amazon brands when I notice they are strongly pushed by Amazon’s algorithm.

patd··on The $1,799 MacBook Pro 13 vs. the $650 Acer Swift 3
I've purchased an Acer Swift 3 (the Intel version) with 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and 3:2 screen (which I prefer) but it was 1000€, not $650.
patd··on Gadgets That Refuse to Die
I have an HP TouchPad, the tablet that ran WebOS. Almost ten years later there are still people that are making Android versions for it. The battery sucks by now and the CPU is not very powerful so it’s not snappy but it’s still usable for light apps.

Travel light, buy what you need along the way. Take long flights during the night so they'll sleep. Take trains/subways instead of cars/taxis as they'll be able to walk around and interact with other people. Mix activities for adults with thing that they would enjoy (zoo, parks, fireworks, ...). Hype up some of the things they'll see the next days so they'll be excited to see it. Let them pick some of the restaurants and activities.
patd··on [dead]
I was already on that trend by noticing that I get more pleasure from my side projects than my 9-5 job. That also lead me to the FI/RE mindset.

Then two years ago, 3 people I knew died including the young son of close friends. Death used to be something for older people, now it's a clear possibility for me and my family too.

Last year I took 3 months off to travel around the world with my family (wife, 2 yo and 4 yo). Most of my older colleagues congratulated me and told me they wished they had done the same at my age (35). Friends my age were mostly concerned about work (impact on career, getting permission, etc) or convinced it's impossible to travel with young children.

patd··on We're in for 2 Months
The curve that we must flatten is the admissions to the ICU as that's the main bottleneck if we want to limit the number of deaths.

And 2 months is probably not back to normal (international travel, etc). China is still fearing a second wave coming from the rest of the world.

patd··on Scaling Bitbucket’s Database
GitHub’s import feature worked well for me. You’re obviously going to lose the wiki, issues etc. But at least you’ll keep your repo history, branches, ...
patd··on [dead]
His argument seems to be that nobody is willing to pay for those massive investments. It’s not backed up by many facts in his article so I don’t know how true it is.
patd··on Counterfeits on Amazon cost Warren bird feeder business $1.5M
I was browsing for bird feed recently on Amazon DE and FR sold by Amazon themselves as I mostly don’t trust third parties. Some reviewers said they received just a transparent plastic bag with different seeds in it.

All those reviews were from 2019. So my guess is that they’ve started to commingle in Europe too.
