patatino··on Ask HN: What work/office purchase transformed your life?
I have a random chair, a random desk, a random monitor, a random keyboard and mouse, and I never had any problems with anything at all. I feel lucky I have not had problems with my eyes, hands, or back doing this for 20+ years.
patatino··on Ask HN: I found that I often have a lazy day after productive day
I have the same as OP. I tried that, thinking maybe I was just working too much on the good days. Didn't help. Now I ride the wave, having a good day. I crunch out as much as I can.
patatino··on Ask HN: What software do you need, that doesn't exist?
Yes they do
patatino··on Ask HN: What software do you need, that doesn't exist?
My car reminds me when I shut down the engine to not forget my phone on the display.
patatino··on Ask HN: Do you prefer to search for a job in a job board or trough a recruiter?
Had the same experience, also company telling me they do not like the recruiters. Will not use them anymore in the future.
patatino··on Ask HN: What's Your Desktop Background?
I don’t care, I see the background after login and then not anymore

patatino··on Medicaid Could Save $2.6B Within a Year If Just 1% of Recipients Quit Smoking

patatino··on Ask HN: Do you like Notion? Isn't it overrated?
I use it daily, it works for me but honestly it still feels weird. But so do all note taking apps.
patatino··on Ask HN: React Native or Flutter for a new app in 2023?
I worked with both. Honestly, it doesn’t matter. Choose what you like more
patatino··on Ask HN: Hundred Year Software
A lot of software would still run but we decided to optimize it and write it new. No way to prevent that.
patatino··on What do you think is important for relationships to work out long term?
Like everything worth anything in life. Hard work
patatino··on Ask HN: Why do we still put up with telephone
I don't particularly appreciate calling people or getting called. But when we built our house, I fucking loved it. I could reach anybody I needed to and could solve problems right away. It was really powerful, from having a problem to talking to someone and fixing it within hours and not having to send an email, not hearing back, and having a bad night's sleep.
patatino··on Meta preps new social app
I am waiting for the day they integrate something like this in whatsapp. Welcome to your new social media app 2bn users. Would be the first social media account my parents have
patatino··on Americans Gaining Most Weight in Their 20s and 30s: What They Can Do
Yes, that's why it is so funny to me nobody talks about stress. Sure, it is easy on paper to lose weight, just do not overeat. It is more about emotions and stress than scanning food for me. Most of the time, gaining weight is a symptom.
patatino··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
iOS user spend more money
patatino··on Instagram Is Disabling Its NFT Features
Or with metaverse, only idiots would work on that.
patatino··on Ask HN: How successful were you getting out of tech and where did you go?
What did you end up doing?
patatino··on Ask HN: How successful were you getting out of tech and where did you go?
Try to optimize for free time. Work four days a week. Get a remote job where you can do some errands during the day or take a more extended lunch break, and you are now working four days 5-6 hours for six figures. Hard to beat in any other profession.
patatino··on Ask HN: How do you turn off your problem solving brain with people you love?
My wife is a therapist. When a patient is in a bad, toxic, and maybe even violent relationship, the solution is often a breakup. The patient already knows this. It doesn't help to tell the patient just to breakup. They are here because they lack the strength to go through it. Her job is to help them with that and not state the obvious.

I am a father of two kids. They often have problems that can be solved really quickly, but the problem is often just a symptom of emotions, and your job is to help them go through those emotions so they learn how to handle them.

patatino··on 30 Days of Python
Maybe read the description:

This challenge may take more than100 days, follow your own pace.

patatino··on Ask HN: If you were not laid off, how are your 1:1 meetings going?
I hope you fought back on that. That is a personal attack and nothing more.
patatino··on Ask HN: I suck at sales and marketing, got any advice?
Not much other than doing it again and again and again. But you know this already
patatino··on Ask HN: Would I be stupid to give up a big tech job?
You are in a unique position in the history of time where you make A LOT of money for a regular job. My approach would be to look at it as an exit strategy. Work in FAANG until mid-thirties, save as much money as possible. By then, you could be financially free and do whatever you like, start a company, study, or change fields.

By then, you also maybe have a family who will change how you look at the world completely. Also, you would have a good CV which will give you a job anytime you need one.

Yes, it is a safe route, but also one that leads to freedom, which is very powerful.

patatino··on Ask HN: Are you thinking about quitting?
I just did. Since I got kids, it got worse, honestly. I waste so much time on work. I can't take it anymore if it's just another CRUD job. I have no idea what my next role will be. I will take some time to find something I like. I hope I can find one that gives a least some meaning.
