pastor_bob··on Exercise increases number of immune cells in cancer patients
Peter Attia got me into having a weekly MRI and wearing a dexcom 24/7. Costly, but great stuff.
pastor_bob··on Dalai Lama apologizes after video asking child to ‘suck’ his tongue
Perhaps some people believe a country should be free and independent if they desire regardless if they're a 'good' country or not.
pastor_bob··on US IRS to hire 30k staff over two years as it deploys $80B in new funding
It's far easier for a business to evade paying taxes. Half the businesses I visit in NYC admit they want cash so they don't have to report it on their taxes.

>The ultra-rich are largely law-abiding and have the paperwork to prove it.

Just because they have receipts of their expensed 'business' dinners and 'client' trips to Disney World doesn't mean they're not fraudulent

pastor_bob··on Italy's ChatGPT ban attracts EU privacy regulators
Do you think companies should be allowed to scan your face and deny you entry if your Linkedin profile ties you to a law firm?
pastor_bob··on Launch HN: Baseplate (YC W23) – Back end-as-a-service for LLM apps
Your two cited 'customers' are both W23 startups as well.

Are they really using your nascent product to support their nascent products? What plans are they on?

I feel like this can be "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" type of exclusive behavior.

> lacks creativity on things outside of its training set

What's the definition of creative here? It can come up with any solution it sees fit for a problem, even ones people wouldn't think of. I've seen it make up quotes, legal cases, and scientific studies. One can say that's creative.

pastor_bob··on A VC bought the Flatiron Building and didn’t pay for it
It was supposed to be renovated and converted to a hotel, but there was some sort of squabble between the co-owners and it was left half gutted. It was auctioned off then as a dispute resolution.
pastor_bob··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
Harvard has a price calculator: https://college.harvard.edu/financial-aid/net-price-calculat...

The price (30-40k a year) is equivalent to a lot of good state schools in-state (Berkeley, UVA, UMich, etc) at about 180-200k family income.

pastor_bob··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
Ivy League schools are not outliers though. Pick your random private college with an 80% acceptance rate, and it probably costs 70k+ a year
pastor_bob··on Ivy League Prices Are Pushing $90k a Year
*If you come from a high income family.

Middle-income or low income can go for basically free or the equivalent of 'at-cost' for room and board.

pastor_bob··on Apple introduces Apple Pay Later
Apple card already allows you to pay in monthly installments with no interest and gives you back 3%: https://www.apple.com/apple-card/monthly-installments/
pastor_bob··on Apple introduces Apple Pay Later
> Users will be asked to link a debit card from Wallet as their loan repayment method; to help prevent users from taking on more debt to pay back loans, credit cards will not be accepted.

So in addition to the soft pull requirement, it's clear this is almost exclusively targeted at people with good finances.

Not being able to use a credit card is a huger bummer though. Buying something like a macbook pro is a decent way to meet the minimum on a credit card with a signup bonus if you're not a high rolling spender normally.

pastor_bob··on Apple introduces Apple Pay Later
making buying higher priced items easier to stomach. This is clearly targeted to people with good credit.
pastor_bob··on Disney begins laying off 7k employees
Turning Red and Lightyear are both Pixar movies
pastor_bob··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
A few hundred years ago, the vast majority of people lived under Autocracies.

The elite could simply dictate how societies would operate.

pastor_bob··on Sam Altman didn’t take any equity in OpenAI, report says
Sam Altman is only 37. He has time to wait.
pastor_bob··on ChatGPT Plugins
That's not 100% true. They're focused on now selling a product and developing an ecosystem. They have basically a non-existent settings interface. You can't even change the email tied to the account or drop having to be logged into Google if you signed up with your Google account.

I wish I had known how restrictive they are when I casually signed up last year.

pastor_bob··on ChatGPT Plugins
I find the website to be extremely buggy. Obviously they're prioritizing banging out new features over QA
pastor_bob··on Indeed cuts 15% of workforce, 2200 jobs
Indeed is no good. They try to suck everything out of you when you apply to a posting on their site, including details about your current company. I avoid using them if I can.

They make money purely out of laziness of their customer base.

"Where should we post this listing? I don't know...Indeed?"

>We'll probably need less and less developers as AI advance.

We've always progressed to needing fewer developers to do what we currently do. Companies like Squarespace, Shopify, AWS, etc have allowed people to do more with less. Long gone are the days an artist would hire a developer to build them a website they could host a portfolio on.

But growth has filled in the voids with more ambitious work.

It's daunting, but you can also look at this from the opposite perspective. Why work for someone on a 5 person team, when you can try and run the same business with 1 person (i.e. you).

The people who should be afraid are actually those that run companies like Meta and Twitter. Better developer productivity means competitors can chomp at their heels with much smaller teams.

Interesting, how does this know what executables are available on your PATH?
pastor_bob··on T-Mobile Reaches Agreement to Acquire Mint Mobile for Up to $1.35B
I'm not sure you can blame advertising campaigns. Ryan Reynolds' 'thing' is being self-aware that he's Ryan Reynolds doing something. It's basically the M.O. of Deadpool.

He makes it look easy, but I'm sure it's hard to replicate.

pastor_bob··on T-Mobile Reaches Agreement to Acquire Mint Mobile for Up to $1.35B
The alcohol stuff always amazes me. Making a gin isn't rocket science. Aviation Gin was basically a no-name brand. The fact that attaching a celebrity name brings so much value is mind-boggling to me.
pastor_bob··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
>We expect to announce restructurings and layoffs in our tech groups in late April, and then our business groups in late May. In a small number of cases, it may take through the end of the year to complete these changes.

Wow, that's a pretty long timeline from announcement to execution. Being told you might be laid off some time in the next 10 months. I guess they're hoping people quit?

pastor_bob··on Jimmy Carter: Unlucky President, Lucky Man
> appoint an inflation hawk to the Fed

Carter didn't create the inflation crisis (hint it was Nixon who did), so yes having to appoint Volcker was due to a bit of being president during a unluckly economic time.

pastor_bob··on I'm starting a zero waste grocery delivery service in NYC. Anybody interested?
What you're saying is the real innovation is creating a zero waste supply chain. Would require a lot of sanitization, which probably offsets the benefit of no plastic.
