parrellel··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
I have only a passing interest in this but, basically, different oil fields have different percentages of different weight hydrocarbons. The oil can be refined with catalytic cracking to make more gas / kerosene / whatever. As I understand it, we're using "lighter" oil and we're focusing on making gas, so the percentage diesel in the crack spread is lower. So, there's less diesel coming out of the refineries.

This started, I believe when fracking became a major thing (the late 2000s), because shale oils tends to have less heavy hydrocarbons then the old wells.

parrellel··on US and Iran announce deal to end military operations
Reading through the proposal Iran put out, it sounds like Trump's surrendered?

1- Permanent and immediate cessation of war on all fronts, including Lebanon

- You know Israel won't let that happen

2- America's commitment not to interfere in Iran's internal affairs and to respect the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

- No regime change

3- Complete removal of the naval blockade within 30 days

- Iran gets its oil money back.

4- America's commitment to the withdrawal of its forces from around Iran

- We leave altogether

5- Reopening the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days with Iranian arrangements

- Iran gets to charge its "service" fees

6- Suspension of sanctions on the sale of oil, petrochemical products and derivatives and Iran's full access to its financial resources.

- Oil money again

7- Necessity of presenting plans for the reconstruction of Iran in the amount of at least 300 billion dollars by the US and its allies

- We rebuild freakin Iran.

FFS. I think I'm done reading before we give them American Samoa and a puppy.

parrellel··on Federal judge blocks H1B visa $100K fee
Honestly, Executive Orders in general are dysfunctional cludge. I feel less bad about things like DACA, since that's trying to fix something broken instead of wrecking things for no useful reason (or acting to puff up a sick ego) ... but hell no, that should have been a proper law.
parrellel··on Federal judge blocks H1B visa $100K fee
I don't believe Trump's wacko EOs are binding law. Like, the Gulf of Mexico is still the Gulf of Mexico. The DoD is still the DoD.

No reason to give the fascist LARPers the respect. Just don't give the poor clerk forced to regurgitate the junk a hard time.

parrellel··on AI is slowing down
I mean, do you really want to compare AI to the "do crimes hard and fast enough we become a monopoly before anyone can properly respond" model.
parrellel··on I don't want my search engine to think for me
Hey my encyclopedia had yearly updates through 2008!! :D

But seriously, its actually nicer... and the equations on the back covers don't randomly change to crap every fourth time you open the book.

parrellel··on I don't want my search engine to think for me
You know, I've been investing in reference books since Google started failing to accurately report basic equations and constants.

It's kinda nice actually.

parrellel··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
DDG is a mediocre search engine. A mediocre search engine is still much better than whatever Google's become.

Honestly, the answer is so often a little toy search like Marginalia or going straight to the website in question now, its frightening.

parrellel··on Why modern parents feel more sleep deprived than our ancestors did
My second screamed every night for two years. It was fun.
parrellel··on GameStop makes $55.5B takeover offer for eBay
No, its going to give the CEO and some shareholders a few billion and destroy eBay. Because we can't have nice things.

I am so painfully sick of this.

parrellel··on GameStop makes $55.5B takeover offer for eBay
I was just thinking how nice it was to still get used stuff on eBay and now Mr. McMemeStock is going to kill it to extract a few billion for himself.

Yay.

parrellel··on European civil servants are being forced off WhatsApp
"We shall trust 27 different sets of 3 to 10 guys in garages and ensure they never become large enough to blackmail a large percentage of the world's governments safe in the knowledge we can in fact arrest them for illegal bs" does have an appeal however.
parrellel··on AI could be the end of the digital wave, not the next big thing
I mean when I needed to look up something I used to just google it.

Now, with the advent of LLMs I've had to pull out my old textbooks from storage.

parrellel··on Android Developer Verification
Yeah, no. No one needs your spyware.
parrellel··on Chuck Norris has died
"Good People" suddenly going all in on racist rants and hard-core misogyny is never going to stop being disturbing.

Some of them taught me how to behave!? Did they just not believe any of those things?

MAGA is a horrifying movement.

parrellel··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
Alex Jones is a bit much, yathink?

They're an amoral monopolistic megacorp that should have been broken up a year ago.

They are performing the ritual of maximalist offensive position -> half-hearted walk back to a worse status quo.

Is the problem they claim to want to solve real? Maybe. I haven't seen a convincing breakdown that doesn't lump a lot of unrelated fraud in the unvetted APK bucket.

That's beside the point though. No one should applaud this utterly predictable and disgusting behavior.

I don't accept it when Unity does it. I don't accept it when Hasbro does it. I won't accept it here either.

parrellel··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
I suppose the question is, who is actually willing to believe Google is going to deal in Good Faith. Why would anyone ever even begin to think that?
parrellel··on Stop Sloppypasta
[flagged]
parrellel··on Re: Is Lutris Slop Now
Welp, that's another project down the drain.

I'm actively going to lie about things to make a point is certainly one way to ensure I'm never trusting you.

parrellel··on You don't have to
That was an excellent article.

"I’m not arguing that this technology should be unilaterally destroyed; I am arguing that we are collectively using it in the dumbest possible way, causing the most self-inflicted injury, and maximizing the amount of angst and suffering we’ll all have to contend with. I am angry at generative AI because it seems to be making us think and act like complete idiots."

Made me smile.

parrellel··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
Interesting, I've mostly heard it referring to individuals like Navalny or the mayor of Istanbul. I suppose it makes sense for it to refer to any random political critter.
parrellel··on Discord cuts ties with identity verification software, Persona
Translate: People who are likely to be attacked by (Putin|Orban|Erdogan|Trump) or similar.
parrellel··on Android will become a locked-down platform in 195d
The F-Droid website has a new banner on top to remind visitors that Google did not change course and Android will be locked-down in under 200 days.
parrellel··on US repeals EPA endangerment finding for greenhouse gases
He means it's not in his feed. "Random old woman gets kidnapped" is represented 100 times more strongly in the datastream then "1000 protestors organize immigrant protection system" or "US Citizen Mung families defend elderly Vietnam vets".

... at least "Random Old Woman" has got people looking askance at the internet connected security camera ecosystem, I guess.

parrellel··on Lennart Poettering, Christian Brauner founded a new company
Well, I can see what heinous thing is going to be ruining my day in 5 years.

Attestation, the thing we're going to be spending the next forever trying to get out of phones, now in your kernel.

parrellel··on Xfwl4 – The Roadmap for a Xfce Wayland Compositor
So long as I can windowshade things and it doesn't end up making things a blurry mess, cool.

Now the last 3 times I tried Wayland everything ended up a blurry mess and some windows just ended up the wrong size, so.

I suppose I'll just keep holding out hope.

parrellel··on National Guard activated in Minneapolis after Border Patrol agent kills man
Well, the whole execution was recorded from at least 3 available angles. You could just check.
parrellel··on [dead]
Well that's another murder. God help us.
parrellel··on Predicting OpenAI's ad strategy
Well, the obvious answer is none of these companies should.
parrellel··on Scott Adams has died
The long cut implies reciprocation of the girl's crush and that casts further shade on Leon's backstory.
