papa-whisky··on Australian stock exchange's blockchain failure burns market trust

papa-whisky··on Why do new cars look like wet putty?
I always thought this colour was named "Crayon" by Porsche? Maybe they use different names in different markets...
papa-whisky··on Simulate Asteroid Impacts on Earth
From the other comments here it would appear that this site uses imperial units, but I see it as metric. And no option to switch... Is this being inferred from my location?

Anyway, most deaths I've been able to get is with a gold asteroid, max width and speed, impacting near Dindori, India. The fireball would kill about 448 million. Impact angle makes very little difference.

papa-whisky··on Americans are choosing to be alone, but we should reverse that
Tangentially related, the urban planning focused YouTube channel "Not Just Bikes" recently did a video on the decline of the "third place" (i.e., places other than home and work) in American cities: https://youtu.be/VvdQ381K5xg
papa-whisky··on An ancient Persian way to keep cool (2021)

papa-whisky··on Mass of transactions leaving crypto.com wallets
I think the point is that coinbase is struggling to compete when there are tons of exchanges out there offering low/no fees and ludicrous interest payments on coins kept on the exchange. Even if those other 'exchanges' do all seem to be turning out to be ponzi schemes... For whatever reason people keep flocking to the next one.
papa-whisky··on LibRedirect: Redirect YouTube, Twitter, Instagram to privacy friendly services
I have also been using this extension (redirector) for a long while, for the same purpose. One thing I like about OPs extension is that it can randomise which instance of teddit/nitter/etc you get redirected to. And it's also surfaced a lot of alternative front-ends I didn't even know existed! I'll definitely be trying it out.
papa-whisky··on The Merge
I can't tell if "waste of bytes" is referring to the blog post shared by GP, or to proof of stake as a whole.

If the former; as someone with little knowledge of cryptocurrency the post read fairly convincingly to me. In what ways is it misinformed?

papa-whisky··on ConstitutionDAO
Ignoring the questionable end-goal here, the 'crypto' aspect of this is apparently completely orthogonal to the fund-raising effort[1]. What's the point?

papa-whisky··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
This user has now opened another PR[1], owning up to their trolling and suggesting that the CoC changes should be reverted.

This whole thing is pretty juvenile but I must admit I found it amusing.

papa-whisky··on How I accidentally took down GitHub Actions (2019)
>I used GitHub’s configuration wizard to create a config file.

I wonder why this config UI never made it out of the beta. Sounds kinda handy...

papa-whisky··on If the Moon Were Only 1 Pixel (2014)
Very neat, I'd never heard of this! Here in Melbourne we have a much smaller version set out along a ~6km walk by the bay: https://www.portphillip.vic.gov.au/media/svodom2p/solar-syst...
papa-whisky··on Suburb in the sky: how Jakartans built an entire village on top of a mall
Not really a 'village' like the one in the article, but I recently discovered that there's a row of townhouses on top of a shopping centre in central Melbourne: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.8256146,144.9495821,168a...
papa-whisky··on Zoho.com CEO says domain with 40M users suspended for abuse complaint
I can't help but wonder if the 'free email' thing hurts the company more than it helps.

A couple of years ago my parents wanted to trial individual email for their very small business (just a few employees). Google had recently removed the free tier from Google Apps, and Zoho was the only company we could find that offered a similar service. I set it up and they used it for ~6 months with quite a few issues in that time, whether service outages or (more commonly) emails not being delivered due to Zoho's spam filter or the recipient's spam filter giving false positives. Customer support was near enough to useless.

So when we decided that it was worth upgrading to a paid plan we didn't stay with Zoho, due to the poor experience. If Zoho charged just a dollar or two for accounts it may help reduce all the problems they have with spammers abusing the service and the flow-on effects that has on their customer support.

papa-whisky··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
Kenji Lopez-Alt's method is the best I've come across[1]. His book is mentioned in the linked article as well, I've not read it but it sounds good!

papa-whisky··on On Making Oneself Less Unreadable
The title refers to one of Fowler's quotes in the article:

>Turgid flabby English is full of abstract nouns; the commonest ending of abstract nouns is –tion, and to count the –ion words in what one has written, or, better, to cultivate an ear that without special orders challenges them as they come, is one of the simplest and most effective means of making oneself less unreadable.

papa-whisky··on A Year of Developer Journals with jrnl.sh
The name is clearly just `jrnl`: https://github.com/maebert/jrnl
papa-whisky··on Shimano wants to make your bike as smart as your car
There are quite a few, mostly German. For the hubs themselves look at Schimdt SON, Shutter Precision, or Shimano. For lights, Busch & Muller, Schmidt, or Supernova.

Most dynamo lights use a reflector (more like a car headlight than a normal bike light or flashlight) so despite the lower lumen output they can actually provide much more useful light on the road.

papa-whisky··on Why we fell for clean eating
I find it somewhat hypocritical that this is in The Guardian, considering that they frequently publish the kind of questionable nutritional advice that the article lambasts.
papa-whisky··on Visual Studio Code 1.14 released
Super handy, thanks for this!
