panza··on Core: an experimental new way to write videogames
I'm a commercial dev, previously used Unity, now using Godot. This comment rings true of GD Script and signals. I get around this by using C# and its event handling.

Working with nodes and editor bugs (or features? Hard to know really) is probably the most frustrating - you can really feel that this was initially built for 'smaller' projects.

For this reason, I rarely use the editor outside of setting up the scenes and a general hierarchy.

Daily tools: Emacs (with C# LSP) most of the time. VS Code for debugging. Godot editor for tweaking the scene tree.

Perhaps this perspective is useful for other devs thinking about Godot.

panza··on Ask HN: Hacker News-like forum, specific to game development?
Closest might be gamedev.net, but I'm not sure there's anything out there that qualifies as a HN for game development.

Might need to spread out. Go to engine-specific forums, programming subdomains (eg, graphics programming), news and industry etc.

panza··on Ask HN: Most successful example using LLMs in daily work/life?
Copilot. I suspect a lot of us will (or already do) use it at some level, even if it's just autocompleting logging statements, writing boiler plate/comments, suggesting improvements etc.
panza··on Ask HN: Good sources of math exercises for ~10-17 y/o?
Truly amazing that you think parents can only give their kids maths problems OR teach them social skills.
panza··on Zotero for Android available for beta tests
Yeah, fundamentally it helps you manage records of documents. Of course you can also attach PDFs and full text (if you have them), but it's the record that's important.

A common use case is in academia - it helps you track your citations and then output standardised reference lists, which is a pain to do by hand.

Other tools in this space are Mendeley and Endnote.

panza··on The dead children we must see
Do you actually believe what you've just written here?
panza··on Steam Deck OLED
As a developer, I don't mind paying the 30% for the hosting, payment handling, discoverability, community management etc.

I can't say if it's truly worth the 30%, but I sure don't want to be handling all those services myself or through others.

panza··on Custom instructions for ChatGPT
I agree, selectable user profiles would be useful. The global profile can just include some standard boiler plate ("do not use disclaimers" etc), while the custom profiles can be "I'm an experienced C programmer trying to learn Haskell" or "I'm planning a garden plot, I'm located in hardiness zone 8". You just switch between the two, depending on what you're working on.
panza··on PCSX2 is an open source PS2 Emulator
I don't see this mentioned often enough - it's like a superpower for emulators. You just select the save state and it loads instantly, exactly where you left off.
panza··on C++23: The Next C++ Standard
This is a really good point. It bothers me too, but I hadn't really articulated why.
panza··on Python GUIs
I agree with this. I whipped up a small tcl/tk project, used it for years, worked everywhere. Every time I tried some other framework in Python, I always ended up stepping on rakes. Nothing ever felt right.

These days, if tcl/tk doesn't suffice for my project, then I just move onto another environment entirely.

panza··on Show HN: ChatGPT on 2-Dimensional Map
I like the idea. Most people would probably recognise this as a concept map - perhaps a name like ConceptGPT would resonate more than ChatGPT2D.
panza··on Leaving China
An expat is not an immigrant. It would be incorrect to call the author - who is an expat - an immigrant.
panza··on Godot 4.0 Released
Unity-based dev here. This is looking really strong. Impressed with their focus and speed of development.

If I were putting together a small-ish team with 1-3 people today, I'd be more likely to consider jumping onto Godot vs Unity. Godot is closing the gap.

panza··on Biden says the 3 aerial objects shot down were not Chinese spy balloons
It's like saying "I don't know what kind of fruit this is, but I'm sure it's not a banana." Not defending his response, but it's not that strange.
panza··on US jet shoots down unknown object flying off Alaska coast
Best to assume the US also knows this and is revealing (or not revealing) its capabilities accordingly.
panza··on Ask HN: Is StackOverflow Dying?
I think it will be around for a while - the volume of content is still valuable.

But like many others, I've stopped contributing to it. The last time I tried to answer a question, it was marked down. My answer was correct, concise, to SO standards etc, but because the question was poorly worded and formatted, I was seen to be 'encouraging' it.

I appreciate the need for high quality questions. But burying correct answers is completely ridiculous.

panza··on Paul Graham AI Essay Writer
This is a good point. More and more people will unknowingly encounter AI content and then feel disconcerted when learning of that fact. It seems likely that it will lead to a general distrust of the technology, insofar as the AI content contains falsehoods.

I suspect we'll see new developments in systems and policies relating to provenance.

panza··on Paper map sales are booming
I've seen some otherwise capable people struggle with compasses and map reading. It's a good idea to print out some basic map reading instructions and attach it to the map just in case. That way, anyone else in your family/party will have a running start if something happens to the 'map guy'.
panza··on Paper map sales are booming
I'd really like a breakdown on what these maps are actually used for. They could just be wall art, perhaps a (growing?) niche of custom guide books, maybe a renewed interest in exploring offroad/outback etc.

Or maybe just more people are acknowledging that a fallback paper map in the glove box is a good idea.

panza··on This Voice Doesn't Exist – Generative Voice AI
Say you're an indie game developer. In 2022 you'd pay someone on Fiverr to do a 'trailer' voiceover on your game trailer. This year, you'd use this - and also get a few more languages in there. Next year is gonna be an interesting year.
panza··on The James Webb Space Telescope is finding too many early galaxies
The general idea is that the set of all contingent things can only be explained by something non-contingent (ie necessary).

A necessary thing, by definition, is its own explanation. "I am what I am" etc.

From there, classical theists attempt to connect that necessary thing to what you'd commonly understand as God.

panza··on Canada buys 88 F-35 fighter jets for $14.2B
You might have a point if the story was something like "Canada's 88-point plan for dealing with undesirables", but we're talking about buying fighter jets.
panza··on The skilled trades haven't caught as a career choice with Gen Z
This rings true for me. Blue collar parents, absolutely no way they'd let me get a trade. Couldn't even join the military - had to be university.
panza··on Casio-F-91W die-shot
It's durable, keeps good time, battery lasts 7-10 years, clear display, thin and light. It's incredible value for $15-25. Deserves to be as popular as it is.
panza··on PRQL: a simple, powerful, pipelined SQL replacement
> Writing SQL is like uploading a program; just like a shader to a GPU... But unlike a GPU, you have full flexibility to permanently store your logic right there in your SQL DB.

I agree - this is a really interesting way to put this.

panza··on How about a Genius Basic Income?
That's not what they said, and I believe you know that. Not sure what you're trying to achieve here.
panza··on Spotify’s CEO apologizes to employees over Joe Rogan controversy
I could just as easily turn your argument into 'anything that draws public ire should be removed', which would be just as ridiculous on its face.

I'm not saying Spotify should do anything. I'm saying it has other ways to 'do something' about these kinds of things.

panza··on Spotify’s CEO apologizes to employees over Joe Rogan controversy
There are different ways to 'do something' about it. One option could be to remove the thing that (some) people are performatively hating today.

Another option could be to release a statement like: "We understand your concern, however we are pursuing what we believe to be a greater good, etc. To help you avoid content you don't like, we will improve our labeling."
