panny··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
This is reminiscent of 90s Japan. Whisky consumption dropped during the economic hard times. Whisky manufacturers were forced to scale back production because of it. When demand came roaring back in the 2010s, they had no whisky to sell and a decade long runway to get production restarted. Whisky doesn't happen overnight. It's know as the Japanese Whisky Armageddon.
panny··on Japanese used bookstores see 5x sales surge as books are being bought by the ton
A dark age will come. AI shredders destroy all the books then hallucinate what they once contained.
panny··on Every U.S. State Ranks Above Every Foreign Economy in Household Consumption
Interesting chart, but how is consumption measured? Dollars or stuff? Everything costs way more in the US.
panny··on CSS-Tricks in Limbo
I don't support vagrancy and shitting in bushes. I would think most people can agree with that. That's a pretty low bar. You're the only one seeing races here.
panny··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
I've worked with "engineers" that make one commit in 2 months and it's a spelling correction. I'm pretty sure that being 7 times faster than that is still quite slow compared to me :) I hear a lot of breathless enthusiasm, but this article is possibly the first time I'm seeing the question answered "If AI is so great, where are all the applications?"
panny··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
>ollama to run qwen 3.8 27b

Installed this recently to try it out.

>pi.dev to write and implement openspec specifications, herdr to manage many pi instances

Thanks for mentioning the tools you're using successfully. It seems like most people using LLMs are keen to keep their cards close to their chest.

panny··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
I'm sorry, what is your username again? I can't read it, because it's tiny light grey text on a light grey background.

Controversy shouldn't give me cataracts either.

panny··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
>like a wasteful software program "polling" these data sources hoping that something really important will surface

This is me on eBay :)

panny··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
You guys are saying this on a website which puts light grey text on light grey background.
panny··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
>This war started as a regime change operation in Iran

I believe this war started with a tomahawk missle murdering a school full of children and then the US denying involvement. I very clearly remember it. US attacks Iran unprovoked. First act, murder their children in school. If you wanted to solidify opposition to the US in Iran, I don't think they could have done a more effective job.

panny··on Claude is no longer available for minors
Techbros: It's fine to demand ID verification for everything, except voting, because that's racist.

But, it's nice that Anthropic is finally admitting claude is just a casino of code. Keep pulling that one armed bandit, maybe you'll get the right code next time.

panny··on AI Has a Discovery Problem
We're all ants. You can't see the whole sky by design. That's the "guard rails" they talk about.

The non-technical marketing person can't use it because they don't understand programming tools. AI is by programmers for programmers. AI agents might make perfect sense to someone who understands a posix pipe. Marketers don't.

panny··on We put an LLM in a PostgreSQL analyzer, then stopped letting it decide truth
I couldn't finish reading the salespitch because it's ai slop. Which tells me the software side is probably just slop too.
panny··on The law won't save us from Meta's 'pervert glasses' The only solution is mockery
Why is it only perverted when we film each other? Not when those black dome cameras film us at a store or restaurant or a flock camera films us on the road?
panny··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
And once again, you guys make this claim without reading the law.

>several provisions of the Copyright Act imply that it uses the word "author" only to refer to human beings, including provisions (1) vesting copyright ownership "initially in the author"; (2) limiting copyright duration to 70 years after "the author's death"; (3) providing for inheritance of certain rights by the author's "widow or widower" or "surviving children or grandchildren"; (4) requiring a signature to transfer copyright ownership; (5) extending protection to unpublished works regardless of the author's "nationality or domicile"; and (6) defining a "joint work" based on the authors' "intention" to merge their contributions in a certain way.

The law clearly, definitively, is talking about human authorship and nothing else. You are basing this concept that you can copyright AI written code on a law change that has not happened. It is very very unlikely that a law change can/will ever happen, because copyright law in particular is enshrined in international treaties like the 140 year old Berne Convention. This is a major reason why I was very much opposed to the TPP. Every new international copyright treaty is just more cement, making it completely unchangable. If you want to change this law, it will require cooperation from most of the countries in the world to do it.

panny··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Yes, that's exactly what it means. AI works are public domain by default. Copyright law requires the work is created with human creativity. The essential piece is to clearly define what parts are AI generated vs human written. This is an obligation placed on you by the courts, and if you don't do it, it becomes very very hard to argue that you wrote that code.
panny··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Once again, I will point you to the law,

https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/LSB10922

You did not write it, the AI did. Either the work cannot be copyright, or the AI owner (Anthropic) owns the code. Not you. In no case can you own code you didn't write. You guys keep arguing that it enjoys copyright protection without realizing this part. There is no "work-for-hire" default in the law for AI even if it did enjoy copyright. You don't own it. And I am pointing out neither should Anthropic.

panny··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
I don't disagree with you on this. However, it is clear to me that a lot of copyfraud is happening in this industry right now. Just look at all the github repos with a) a licnese.txt and b) a claude.md in the repo.
panny··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Anthropic is right here. You need to clearly define what commits are AI authored or you are conspiring to commit copyfraud.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyfraud

AI does not enjoy copyright protection. Pretending you created something written by AI is copyfraud.

panny··on I used AWS cognito for a startup. I wouldn't do it again
Hey, I thought "rawdogging" sounded pretty authentic. Does claude say rawdogging now too?
panny··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
Sure, but who in Trump's DOJ is going to prosecute Trump? Separation of powers my ass.
panny··on Data centers' 'oh s–t' moment
In every good market crash, there's a flash point. In 2008, it was the Lehman Bros collapse and congress refusing the initial bailout. This might be the flashpoint, 75 data centers blocked this year and a supermajority of Americans against their construction.
panny··on AI Agent Has Root
>That’s not hypothetical. That’s POSIX working exactly as designed.

I'm so tired of AI voice.

panny··on Astronomers discover a new type of astrophysical object: A black hole star
I'm pretty sure Soundgarden predicted this :)
panny··on Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash
I'm puzzled how people who didn't care about Snowden are suddenly very upset about Flock. I'm glad they finally decided the 4A is important.
panny··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Cringe. Cards are fun, collectable, and never run out of battery. Mine is a custom limited edition card from a Japanese chocolate factory.

panny··on What will be left for us to work on
> I argue that there will be plenty for us to work on, grounded in the “AI as normal technology” thesis

There is no doubt that AI is creating more work than it produces. Every single line it writes has to be reviewed by someone because AI cannot take responsibility. And it can spew out decades worth of written code every day. Every line is untrustworthy and must be manually verified.

The problem is I don't want to do this work. You don't either. Everyone I've seen using AI to write code does not do this work. Anyone who says they do this work is lying, to you or themselves or a little of both. People just YOLO and ship it.

If that is the only work left to do when using AI, I'll just do it the old way. If that's not good enough to stay employeed, then I'll just find a new career.

panny··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
What open medium would you suggest as an alternative to X?

I miss the days when we had an RFC, people got together, came up with a solution, and we ended up with decentralized NNTP or something. Everything is someone's little kingdom now.

panny··on Coconut oil jet fuel matches kerosene's efficiency in engine tests
Maybe it's time to stop burning food as fuel. What are the jets going to do anyway, bomb Iranian children?

Remember when George W Bush signed into law the corn ethanol bill. Corn tripled in price within 8 years. Fuel didn't get cheaper. In fact it cost more to produce the ethanol.

panny··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
>LLMs are causing slow, bloated, code are going to eat crow once they re-write everything in super-optimized assembly

LLMs have caused such an increase in ram prices that pine64 is no longer making linux machines. When you can't afford RAM, as a direct result of LLMs, it's going to make your assembly app slower too. Sorry, this is the future you chose.
