panny··on Stop Killing the Internet: No Digital ID and No Age Verification
>The legislation should require anonymous or pseudonymous proof-of-age

NO. It really shouldn't. I will not comply. Porn sites can require this shit, but not the rest of the internet. Social media, dating websites, that's up to the users. If kids are on there, that's on the parents. Do your job, be the parent. I'm not going to let lazy good for nothing parents ruin the internet for everyone else.

panny··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
Hear me out...

Why don't we tax stocks like we do homes with a property tax? Why am I paying property tax on the majority of my net worth, but billionaires are not?

Also, I know all about the buy/borrow/die strategy and I have an idea for that too. Let's tax all loans as income. They are, in fact, income. "B-but they have to be paid back!" That's income again, the bank should pay tax on it.

panny··on Feral cats fail at urban rodent control (2018)
>Cats typically prefer smaller meals of defenseless prey when available

I'm sure the authors are dog people, because their solution is remove cats rather than bigger cats. Dog people always seem to have an irrational hatred for cats.

panny··on John C. Dvorak has died
I hated that guy so much when I was a fan of Apple. I think maybe he did it on purpose to keep the readership up. I should probably go back and read a few of his rants again with 20/20 hindsight, now that I'm not particularly fond of Apple any longer. I might end up laughing or even agreeing with him.
panny··on France passes law banning under-15s from social media
Anyone remember when the "papers please" trope was always used in movies to skewer Nazi Germany?
panny··on OverpAId – Fire your CEO. Hire the future
Why would you be scared? I keep hearing about how this is the best time ever to be a programmer because typing everything out by hand is no longer necessary. (apparently a lot of AI fans never heard of code generators, but anyway)
panny··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
$1.5 billion at 150,000 per copyright violation according to DMCA and such. About 10,000 books.

>$3000 per book

Ohhhh, yeah, big copyright fines only apply to us little guys, not the "asshole tech" companies.

panny··on Oracle could face $7B collateral bill for Wisconsin data centre

Wouldn't it be best if the data centers were just... good neighbors? Like everyone talking about illegal bribes and impossible moonshots when the answer is just don't suck?

panny··on Eric Schmidt tried to convert Google to Java
I've learned people who hate Java are basically racists who hate Indians.

>I don’t think we could have a productive conversation together.

Look at yourself. You entitle yourself not only to the tax money of the childless, but also your own retirement at the expense of the next generation as well. You don't even feel the least bit selfish or self centered doing this.

I'm childless. I don't expect anyone to take care of me. Social security will be bankrupt long before I can draw any of it. But you, you still expect to leech off of all of society until the day you die.

panny··on Firefox 12.58% for Desktop Browser Market Share in North America June 2026
Why was this auto [flagged] by HN? I had to vouch this.

Edit: Aaaaand, [flagged] again in 26 minutes with no explanation.

Edit2: Since I'm "posting too fast" once again, I'll just have to reply to you here. "flagged by users" in four minutes? I don't think so. Besides if hacking statscounter was so easy that it happens monthly as you claim (despite that not being proven out on the chart), it seems like a relevant discussion for a site named "Hacker News."

panny··on Tech workers in 2026: a workforce splitting in two
Let's roll out the next dumb cope that every vibe coder replies with... code templates. Code templates are generated by humans. Did you know that copyright law applies to them and if the code template is GPL, then the code it generates is also GPL? Oh, you didn't know that, did you?

https://opensource.org/license/gpl-2.0

>the output from the Program is covered only if its contents constitute a work based on the Program

Read your licenses.

panny··on Tech workers in 2026: a workforce splitting in two
>I don't know where you get this idea.

I got the idea by reading the law,

https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/LSB10922

For example, the copyright is valid for X years after the author's death. The copyright transfers to the author's "widow or widower" or "surviving children or grandchildren". Does AI die? Who is the AI's widow? Who is the AI's children and grandchildren?

Oh, yeah, you're just wrong. The law explicity states that copyright belongs to HUMAN authors. Not AI. And courts have repeatedly ruled AI generated work cannot be copyrighted. You're the one who seems a little confused.

panny··on Exit Chat Control
The funny thing about the Epstein situation is those children had parents. Where were they? Why did the parents let their children go off to a private island to be "massage therapists" for billionaires? It's not like they didn't know what was going on. Jeff didn't just kidnap Virginia and take her to the island. She went with the full knowledge and approval of her father. Why are the parents blameless? The entire situation would not have happened if the parents did their damn job.
panny··on Exit Chat Control
The blind didn't choose to be that way. Grow up. Be the parent and stop being a manchild expecting the world to raise your children for you. You already get generous tax credits for every child, paid for by the childless. I think they are too generous. You already get a generous helping of property taxes to pay for your child's public school (aka, daycare). You leave work early to "pick up the kids" while the childless stay behind and pick up the slack.

I'm not advocating that we take away wheelchair ramps, but you intentionally want to conflate it with that so you can continue to steal money from the childless and force the childess to do your jobs for you. I'm sick of you people acting like your offspring are more important than everyone else. They are not. You will not get age checks. We will vote you down. Everyone is sick of coddling you.

panny··on Tech workers in 2026: a workforce splitting in two
I'm watching as AI afficianados generate code and place copyright licenses on them with some amusement. It's AI generated, so copyright does not apply, nor do your licenses. If you want to argue otherwise, then you have failed to realize that work-for-hire is only automatic for human employees, not AI. So if AI generated code ever does enjoy copyright protection, it's owned by Anthropic and friends, once again, not you.

I'm not using AI agents. I'm not worried about getting left behind. I'm keeping my skills sharp while AI users let theirs dull. My code still enjoys the force of copyright, while they sit precariously between no copyright or copyright they don't own.

>No one is against protecting minors

I am. Be a parent. That's your job. Not mine. I don't have children. Stop expecting me to protect yours. The childless are a majority now. Get used to hearing this more often.

panny··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
His mistake was going to an American hospital at all. For what he paid, he could get a round trip ticket to literally anywhere in the world, then just get realistically priced medical care. The entire American medical establishment needs to end. It's cancer. I won't go. Not even if the alternative is my death. I just won't go. I should probably get some kind of dogtag to wear that explicitly states this if I'm ever knocked unconscious. Just leave me in the ditch man, American medical care is a fate worse than death.
panny··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests

pgrust isn't licensed at all. AI generated code isn't copyrightable. Thanks for spending the tokens I guess.
