panda88888··on US expected to send thousands more soldiers to Middle East, sources say
Personally I feel that by using an asset as collateral the person is essentially “realizing” the gain (the person is formally and contractually saying the asset is worth at least this much and using it to exchange something of value, even if only in case of default) and should pay capital gain tax for however much the gain was based on assessed collateral value minus the cost basis. And the cost basis steps up to the assessed collateral value.

Now that you said it, you are obligated to share more details! :)
panda88888··on Jellyfin: Free software media system
Which non-English subs do you look for? I try to look for Chinese subs and it’s been a struggle to find good tracker.
panda88888··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Thanks for the recommendation. Looks like Gandi got bought out recently. Not sure if it’s for better or worse—will do some more research.
panda88888··on Alphabet selling Google Domains assets to Squarespace
Any recommendations on registrars? I may have to move a couple of domains off Google Domains / Squarespace.

Edit: I am located in the US.

panda88888··on The secret joke at the heart of the Harvard affirmative-action case
I would say upper to middle-upper class.
panda88888··on Before Genshin Impact: A Brief History of Chinese RPGs
I played PAL95. It was fun with an engaging story, and I hope they can do a remake of the original with modern pixel art and music.

Also the Heroes of Jin Yong is fun as well, with some Easter eggs that run true to the Jin Yong’s kung fu universe. I wish there are better/modern attempts to build and flesh out the Jin Yong universe similar to the Marvel series — the work really deserves much better adoptions.

Edit: I also really liked 魔武王, don’t think it has English translation. Really want a remake of this…

Edit2: English title of 魔武王 is Dark Knight Saga

panda88888··on I tried to buy a Rolex and fell into a grey market for luxe watches
Really good ones are somewhere between $300 to $500 depending on the model and the factories that made them. Also depends on how much the middle person skins off the top.
panda88888··on 50% rejection rate for iPhone casings produced in India shows Apple’s challenge
I agree with the huge negative impact if Apple abandons the effort. “If even Apple can’t do it, who can?” will be the new meme.
panda88888··on Modern Mono
I like iA Writer Duospace. It is not a strictly monospaced font, but imo the additional half width really makes m/w much more readable.
panda88888··on DeepMind AI is as fast as humans at solving previously unseen tasks
Looks like currently the agents interact in the simulated world only. Would be interesting when combined with robots from Boston Dynamics or similar and see how it learns to adapt and operate under real world environment and constraints.
panda88888··on US Army officer reply-all E-mail chain causes pandemonium
Isn’t reply all a client side function? It just fills in the to and cc fields for the user rather than having the user manually enter all the email addresses?
panda88888··on Missing radioactive capsule found in WA outback after frantic search
AirTag it
panda88888··on Sharing Your Netflix Account
Netflix already limit number of simultaneous streams. Higher tier allows more simultaneous streams.
panda88888··on Japanese explained to programmers
Sounds a lot like how chatgpt learns :)
panda88888··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
In CA it is not. But it doesn’t stop this 25%+ tip minimum for normal service advice.
panda88888··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
The logical conclusion is that we should tip the teachers daily based on how little Johnny felt the educational experience was for the day /s

panda88888··on Flexport slashes 20% of global workforce over weak 2023 volume forecast
Probably removing redundancy in the business flow process path?
panda88888··on Facial recognition tech gets woman booted from Rockettes show due to employer
I should clarify that this is at the R&D + manufacturing facility, not customer facing shop. :)
panda88888··on Facial recognition tech gets woman booted from Rockettes show due to employer
Also something similar. A motorcycle (scooter) company in Taiwan only allows their own brand motorcycle into the company parking lot. So if you commute with a non-company scooter, good luck finding parking.
panda88888··on A crash dummy aimed at protecting women drivers
I think somewhere along the lines of 20, 50, and 80 percentile would work.
panda88888··on If you die in the game, you die in real life
Highly recommend bofuri. It’s a fun poke at accidental exploit of game mechanics from unusual and unexpected way of playing a MMORPG.
panda88888··on If you die in the game, you die in real life
One life in game where respawn takes 10 months :)
panda88888··on Almost monospaced: the perfect fonts for writing
This is great. I am going to try it out.
panda88888··on Ask HN: What piece of code/codebase blew your mind when you saw it?
I remember figuring out by myself the reclusive solution to tower of Hanoi back in high school AP comp sci class as extra credit. It was a shock that the solution is so simple and elegant.
panda88888··on Google canceled its next Pixelbook and shut down the team building it
Yes, the Hp elite dragonfly. I think the Pixel chromebooks haven’t been available internally for a while. I still use the Pixelbook I bought myself at home—it is fairly nice and light with 3:2 screen.
panda88888··on How did DoorDash succeed? We are having trouble selling to restaurants
Yes it’s true. Basically DoorDash creates a fake website for the restaurant and even sets up a phone line to take orders. The order is then forwarded to the actually restaurant who aren’t aware that this order is done through DoorDash. If there are any issues i.e. wrong order forwarded, too busy for phone orders so long prep time, or out of a particular menu item, the restaurant gets the blame and the customer has no idea that they didn’t order with the restaurant directly but rather through a middle man. This has little upside for the restaurant and plenty of downsides.
