I also remapped the enter key to act as ctrl if pressed with another key to get symmetry with caps lock key.
panda88888··on OnlyFans creator stalked and had sex with Meta employees to reinstate Instagram
I remember reading on hn that even googlers have trouble recovering their own old accounts…
panda88888··on More Subprime Borrowers Are Missing Loan Payments
Did you provide the assets as collateral for the loan? I imagine a traditional mortgage may not have this as an option, but a different kind of loan may have been possible. However, you can probably only borrow up to a portion of the collateral value.
panda88888··on Equality is prevented by the misperception that it harms advantaged groups
Perhaps I am too pessimistic, but I think even with healthcare or housing when the barrier is broken down the system would segregate into two. A public option (no/little barrier) and a luxury (pay to play) option. Which in this analogy is analogous to another ballpark for professional baseball teams being built with taller fences and more expensive tickets.
panda88888··on Coinbase's 10-Q update: users' crypto asset could be subject to bankruptcy claim
What about the cash balance? Is it also subject to seizure if Coinbase goes bankrupt?
panda88888··on Among a certain set, counterfeit luxury bags may be more popular real ones
Well... a single real birkin (plus all the other purchases needed at the Hermes store before someone is "qualified" to buy a bag) easily exceeds 10k.
panda88888··on Forget personalisation, it’s impossible and it doesn’t work
Personalization work but companies tend to overfit which reduces the benefits of personalization.

Let’s forget the obvious demographics correlation with products and just start with an example.

Simply knowing that someone is active on HN, I wills bet ads on tech product and services would be more effective on them compared to a random person on the internet. The problem comes when the personalization gets too personal and stuck in the past, like how Amazon recommends another of the same product category after you bought one.

Don’t banks have a certain reserve ratio that they need to maintain? This would mean the absolute maximum they can give out in loans is a fixed amount, and likely slow changing. Assuming loans make money and banks want to maximize profit, banks would loan out close to the max they can (of course they need to keep margin to address any risks). This would mean giving more loans to certain group of people would put downward pressure on the amount of loans banks can give to others.

What I envision in the 4th panel is that less people want to pay to sit at the benches, the players get paid less, players leave for other opportunities, and downward spiral starts. Eventually there are no more professional games because there are no money to support it.

It’s weird, but I urge everyone to give it a chance, lol.
panda88888··on Citi trader error causes European stock markets to lose €300B in minutes
By the outcome. If it made money, it was a trading strategy.
panda88888··on Ask HN: Recommendation for the mom of a near-college-aged “tech geared” student?
I agree with other recommendations on finding a mentor who’s familiar with tech. From your description it sounds like your daughter is interested in software. You can check https://www.womenwhocode.com/events for local network events that she can attend to meet and speak with others of all experience levels.

Well, the 13” M1 MacBook Pro is basically the Air with a fan and more ports?
panda88888··on MIT researchers develop a paper thin loudspeaker
It’s a weird experience, a bit uncanny valley like. I was using while watching video, and it’s somewhat eerie to turn my head and still have the audio from the earphones “pinned” to the screen.
panda88888··on MIT researchers develop a paper thin loudspeaker
Apple already does this via spatial audio for AirPod pro.

panda88888··on Florida says it rejected math textbooks for referring to critical race theory
I think both are important. One solution is to give credit for both the work (i.e. the process with which the student attempts to solve the problem) and the correct answer. This is because in real life the correct answer matters, and we should encourage students to be careful with their work to make sure it is correct. I would also encourage students to check their answer if it is simple (i.e. substitute 3 for x and see if the equation holds).
panda88888··on Florida says it rejected math textbooks for referring to critical race theory
I agree with the multiple methods, but I believe that certain things in math are considered to be basic building blocks (such as single digits add/sub/mul/div) that should be memorized similar to in sports how certain movements are considered basic and are practiced until it becomes muscle memory.

As for the difference in outcome of white vs non-white in poor neighborhoods, I feel there are more at play than institutionalized racism, but it is incredibly difficult to have a nuance discussion on the topic.

panda88888··on Netflix Should Sell Ads
I feel super bowl commercial are different though. They aren’t the average ads—they are the high budget, high creativity jewel crown of ads.

panda88888··on Using foot pedals for modifier keys in Linux (2014)
How about mounting the steering wheel on the floor and use it as feet controllers via rotation. Turn right to scroll down, left to scroll up, and turn more to scroll faster!
panda88888··on Exit interviews are a trap
For me the deciding factor of how much honest feedback to provide in the exit interview is determined by who is interviewing me. If it is a routine step of the HR checklist, then most likely the feedback is not really going to have any impact and it is not worth the effort (and also potential risk, however small that may be) to provide detailed comments. However, if the exit interview is conducted by someone whom I trust and has potential pull within the leadership org (manager, manager’s manager, director, VP , etc.) then I am more than happy to give a detailed list of what’s good and what’s bad.

TSMC is actually a Taiwanese company and its most advanced fabs are in Taiwan, a democratic country (more or less, with its own passport, military, government, etc) that is not under the control of China.
