pain_perdu··on Hacking a Billionaire: Technical Overview
This disclosure does not appear in the 5 minute viral video they made about this "hack".
pain_perdu··on Hacking a Billionaire: Technical Overview
This was a dishonest advertising stunt. The billionaire in question is a major investor in the infosec company that sponsored this commercial. They clearly coordinated with him no to demonstrate legitimate vulnerabilities but rather to promote a product, see https://www.wsj.com/articles/digital-security-startup-backed...
pain_perdu··on Ask HN: Recent computer hacking convictions and employability?
I've been in tech for years but my background was also 'non-traditional' (I didn't commit an crimes but definitely didn't have a relevant degree or connections etc) I would be happy to help you with some intro's to startups who would consider a candidate with your background.

Feel free to email the address in my bio and I can see if you're interested in talking to anyone in my network.

Good Luck!

pain_perdu··on How can you tell if someone is lying?
I recently got to spend some time with Jeff Deskovic (we met while he was on vacation), the exoneree mentioned at the top of the article for having spent 16 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. He is looking for folks with technical backgrounds to to consult with Deskovic.org which has helped exonerate 9 other wrong-fully convicted persons.

If anyone is interested, please contact me at the address in my HN profile!

Are the border agents at US airports currently processing TN applications? Are all TN workers considered 'essential' during the current situation?
pain_perdu··on My dad got scammed for $3k worth of gift cards
My friend's 68 year old mother lost $118,000 to a similar scam: https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/consumer-alert-ocean...

Fortunately, her daughter was able to recoup the funds from the banks.

pain_perdu··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Just wanted to vouch: Peter has helped me successfully obtain 3 complex visas over the years and has been equally successful getting visas for numerous friends.

Cannot recommend highly enough.

His advice has always proven solid as well.

pain_perdu··on Ask HN: Bad idea to sell to geeks before enterprise (starting off B2C)
Yeah we sell relatively inexpensive hardware (sub $1000) but combined with powerful software we can do some pretty crazy things at scale. So hobbyists want to play, but enterprise is where we ultimately add the most value and represent the big bucks. Interesting story about basecamp though, thanks!

Just wanted to say that my company has used Peter's firm three times with great results. Peter is the best, listen to his advice!

pain_perdu··on Bitmain, the largest mining hardware company, made around $4B last year
Why not create a coin awarded for proof of AI-modeling and open-up the network to researchers? Seems like it would be a lot more productive if all that processing power went to neural networks.

pain_perdu··on Young Minority MIT Grad Needs a Laptop to Code, can We Help Him?
Thanks! This is a good tip.
pain_perdu··on Young Minority MIT Grad Needs a Laptop to Code, can We Help Him?
I can't speak to his exact reasons for starting a company and moving here with little money other than there was an opportunity to participate in this incubator program.

I feel that silicon valley lacks racial diversity, particularly amongst founders. If there is an opportunity to support under-represented groups I thought it was worth mentioning.

pain_perdu··on Young Minority MIT Grad Needs a Laptop to Code, can We Help Him?
Not quite sure what you mean by 'an ad for the man' but that doesn't strike me as particularly accurate.

I heard about this young fellow who needs a laptop and so I made a post, there are no ulterior motives here, just trying to help.

And yes, the VC is a billionaire would certainly could afford a machine but that offer has yet to be made so here we are.
