> Road damage scales as the _fourth power_ of the axle weight.

I’ve seen numbers that state the road damage caused by one truck is equivalent to several ten thousand cars. (Usually numbers between 10k and 40k).

That seemed hard to believe when I first heard it, but the fourth power you mention is the explanation for that insane number.

Years ago I would have thought the Pinkerton option unlikely, but between privatized prisons and military contractors, I do kind of wonder if we are far off from it.

Marjorie Shaffer wrote a whole book on the topic: "Pepper: A History of the World's Most Influential Spice" [1]

If you are interested in learning more about the history of the spice trade, it's well worth a read.

pacificmint··on Toyota to launch its own automotive software platform by 2025
The subscription was for remote engine start, not to unlock your doors.

And while I hate these kind of subscription plays with a passion, remote engine start is a way less important feature to me than unlocking doors.

Also, after the massive public blowback they have back-peddled he plan, we’ll see where it ends up.

pacificmint··on Show HN: No Trash Search
I need to buy a 3 hole punch, and when searching for reviews yesterday I had the same problem of lots of hits with affiliate links and low quality sites.

I searched for “3 hole punch review” [1] here, and the results have zero relevancy.

First one is a Chinese cell phone company, second a Wikipedia page for an episode of the office, third a thesaurus page with synonyms for ‘colorful’ and fourth a link to the Wikipedia page of Yellow Submarine.

I can’t even imagine how you get there from “3 hole punch review”

I think you are confusing thermonuclear with fission. Thermonuclear means fusion. The first case you mention, the sun, is indeed thermonuclear.

However reactors are on earth not thermonuclear, they are regular fission. Fusion may be on the near or far horizon, depending on who you ask, but we certainly don’t have that ability yet.

> I even watched a documentary on how McDonalds takes the perfect hamburger pictures and how they doctor it.

What’s interesting is that McDonalds mandates that they use the exact restaurant ingredients for the photo shoot without substitutions. But the way they prepare it is of course quite different and done with way more care.

Here is a video from McDonalds Canada about the process [1]

pacificmint··on Ask HN: How do you build your personal start page?
It's been years since I had one, and when I did it was plain, static html only. So I don't have any personal recommendations.

But in case you weren't aware, there is a subreddit for startpages (because, of course there is), you might find some inspiration and ideas there:

I mean, there are certain lessons that each generation seems to have to learn anew.

It just that one would expect this to not be one of them.

pacificmint··on How trains could replace planes in Europe
> fuel consumption per seat at 2.19 L/100 km. A mid-sized petrol-powered car consumes three times as much.

It seems like you are comparing fuel per seat for planes with fuel per vehicle for cars. At five seats, that would be equivalent to 11 l/100km, which almost all modern cars should beat. Even if you only count four seats for the car, it would still be 8.8 l/100km, which many cars can beat.

Interesting that they say “may” offer a choice. My phone does seem to offer the choice, while my iPad apparently doesn’t and only shows 15.

pacificmint··on SpaceX cleared for historic civilian launch next week
Depends on your definition of ‘space mission’, I suppose.

But clearly there is a difference between a suborbital flight with a few minutes of weightlessness and a flight that orbits for three days.

pacificmint··on The New York Times Company Launches Digital Subscriptions for Wirecutter
It seems weird to put a paywall in front of a website that makes money from affiliate links.

While they’ll get revenue from the subscriptions, every reader that doesn’t subscribe and stops reading their articles is now lost affiliate revenue.

Is affiliate revenue that low that this trade off is worth it?

pacificmint··on The Day the Space Station Lurched
> the US accounts for 15 of 19 spaceflight fatalities

That’s skewed though because the US craft had more people on board. The two shuttle accidents killed 14 astronauts while the two Soyuz accidents killed 4.

In terms of number of fatal incidents they are even if you discount the X-15, or pretty close if you don’t.

pacificmint··on Covid in Sydney: Military deployed to help enforce lockdown
> am I misunderstanding why Australia is going to these extremes?

Australia had 923 COVID deaths total, for a population of 25 million. That’s 36 cases per million.

For comparison, the US has 1,887 deaths per million. Most European states aren’t much better, or even worse, per capita.

Now, you can argue if these extremes are worth it, or not, but it seems clear that what they are doing is saving lives.

pacificmint··on Board Games Have a Colonialism Problem
My first thought was Spirit Island, which to be fair, the author mentions at the end of the article.

Spirit Island turns the table on colonialism. While the island gets invaded by the Europeans, the player gets takes the role of supernatural spirits that must defend the island against the colonializers.

Many countries have passed laws to phase out incandescent bulbs, including the US (in 2007) and the EU. [1]

Though the laws typically have many exceptions and take effect over time, so saying “incandescent bulbs are illegal” is a somewhat strong statement.

pacificmint··on The slow rise of robots in the data center
The SR-71 hasn’t flown in 22 years, so that’s a bad example.

There are of course planes that have flown for that long, and longer. The B-52s come to mind. But the SR-71 isn’t one of them.

pacificmint··on Do countries get the list of every passenger that's transiting their airspace?
I had thought that it was discontinued years ago, but apparently they only started phasing it out in 2016 and finally shut it down in 2019. [1]
