The infotainment unit is a giant stain on an otherwise awesome vehicle.
The cameras are so blurry. The bluetooth integration is awkward and unreliable. Using it for navigation is very painful. The screen is very low resolution. The list goes on and on - it's a terrible unit. It's only 3.5 years old but feels like it could be 10 years old. Hell, maybe the initial design and spec is 10 years old. It's kind of weird to have such a piece of garbage as the centerpiece of such a nice vehicle.
The last thing I want is a damn ipad. I want a dumb screen that just supports android auto / carplay. No navigation, no infotainment, etc. Perhaps a simple radio mode. All other functionality required to operate the vehicle should be a physical button.
All these horrible articles about Tesla self driving… the real problem is other car manufacturers putting their poorly implemented assisted driving in their cars. Toyota “safety sense” is worse than any other I’ve tried.
They better spend money on adding unicode support to their music player.
Later on they can switch to their own OS if they want.
They provide the integrated hardware and software that becomes a car. As more sensors are added and engines with the electric transition are even more digitally controlled than ICE, it makes sense to own the base hardware and software.
This is their strength, building cars, which like it or not are just big robots running code, controlled by humans for now.
Toyota can be to Android Car what Samsung is to smartphone Android.
And while I hate these kind of subscription plays with a passion, remote engine start is a way less important feature to me than unlocking doors.
Also, after the massive public blowback they have back-peddled he plan, we’ll see where it ends up.
