p0pcult··on Making It Legal to Play Outside: “Reasonable Childhood Independence” Bills
Cars existing != car centric culture.

Have you been to, say, the Netherlands? There are plenty of cars in Amsterdam, but it is the opposite of a car centric culture. Bikes and pedestrians abound (including bikes with places to "shlep" your kids or cargo around), and they all have right of way, anywhere, and the drivers generally seem to respect it.

Contrast that with a big American city like NYC, and though probably the vast majority of New Yorkers don't own a car, it is still very car-first in the priority of who gets to use the streets.

That he did nothing special. He was a benefactor of circumstance. Further, that we should treat him as such--no one special, just a guy swept up in social media when the social media craze was sweeping people up. One might even say that his methods: bilking Saverin and the Winkelvosses, making what was essentially a hot-or-not clone, point out that he is little more than a slimy con artist. That certainly tracks with his approach to people's privacy.

None of this disproves the point that the parent poster is making. 60MM = 2.5 daily culls. that's not a lot, in context.

Now, if you had different numbers, that would be a thing worth discussing.

That part is fine, but you are also whining about the negotiation process and calling it extortion. You are also implying thay the prospective employee is doing something untoward, which they are not.
p0pcult··on Meta plans to cut thousands of jobs, after CEO predicted no more layoffs
Negotiation isn't extortion. No prospective employer is being extorted. There are no consequences for failing to agree.

Last summer, my piece of shit 2014 Kia Soul was stolen by our local "Kia Boyz" franchise. The thieves totaled it. I got a check for more than it was worth at the time.

We were contemplating going down to one car anyway, because of permanent work from home policies.

I couldn't have been happier.

Oh, and fuck you Kia, your car was a piece of shit.

You really don't understand what a capitalist is, do you? Fortunately, I have enlisted ChatGPT to help you!

p0pcult: Explain what Karl Marx would tell a five year old a capitalist is

ChatGPT: Karl Marx would tell a five year old that a capitalist is someone who owns a business and makes money by hiring people to work for them and selling the things they make for a profit. The capitalist gets rich, while the workers who make the things only get paid for their time and effort. This is what Karl Marx calls "exploitation."

p0pcult: What is a capitalist?

ChatGPT: Capitalism is an economic system in which the means of production, such as factories and businesses, are owned and controlled by private individuals for the purpose of generating profits. In a capitalist system, goods and services are produced and distributed in a market economy, and prices are determined by supply and demand. The goal of a capitalist is to accumulate wealth and capital through ownership and investment in businesses. [Emphasis mine]

Capitalists acquire wealth, passively, by owning things.

English may be a shitty programming language, but wouldn't that imply that wrangling it to get what you want is--in and of itself--a skill, and not "shitty programming" as you put it?

It's definitely a form of authorship--and authorship (of a book) isn't shitty. Writing well is a craft that people hone--to induce wetware computers (i.e., brains) to "hallucinate" (using a term that seems popular with people who interface with these AI tools) what the author desires them too.

Maybe that's the difference? Programming is when you use a very formally constructed language to induce a computer to execute a desired algorithm precisely. Authorship or artistry is when you use a formally loose language (painting, sculpture, writing) to induce a computer to "hallucinate" a desired meme (in the original sense of the word, "unit of meaning").

Both pursuits are somewhat similar, but the breakpoint is the rigor of the language used, maybe?

Ironic, when you are on a site that seems mainly dedicated to people who use specialized language to direct computers to do repetitive things at scale.

Sexual shame damages people. I grew up in a Catholic household where my sex ed consisted of Focus On The Family's workbooks, and their blame and shame, sinful outlook on what turns out to be a normal part of most mammalian lives.

Echoing the sentiment of a sibling comment: this damaged me. I'm middle aged now, and some of residual shame-trauma still exists.

That shame mechanism is one of the things that enables sexual predators to repeatedly prey on others, because ashamed people don't report being sexually abused.

Fortunately, I didnt have to deal with that, but given my upbringing (Catholicism, Altar Boy, Boy Scouts), its just down to probability that I was lucky enough to not have been groomed by a pedophile.
