outsidein··on Former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder nominated to join Gazprom’s board
It is a low temperature scandal, and goes into media whenever there is something news worthy.

In Germany it is totally normal that former politicians switch sides and get high profile jobs in private corporations, often as influencers.

Even active MdB / Abgeordnete could earn millions, they only need to publish the rough dimension of their earnings.

As former chancellor, Schröder is granted a free office with Secretary in Berlin payed by taxpayer money about 0.5 M€ annually, and there are initiatives to abolish this service because of his Gazprom connection.

The strong connections between private economy and government is seen as a key success factor for Germany‘s economy, called Deutschland AG in the 1970‘s (Germany PLC).

outsidein··on GIMP 3.0 Roadmap
Interesting to read GIMP should add live adjustment layers from Photo. Using Affinity for 4 years I’m getting more and more to the point of dropping it completely. So many nice features in theory, put in practice the number of never-got-fixed bugs piles up every day, making it a nice toy app but useless if you depend on one of the broken functions, or lost your work in one of the frequent crashes of file corruptions, or unable to save situations.

I always advocate to deliver a dependable app (fixing bugs, keep it in maintainable state) before adding nice functionality which always raises the risk of breaking something.

Affinity products are dirt cheap (for the average hacker news reader), so choosing GIMP or Photo is mostly no matter of cost, but of other factors. As even Affinity struggles with resources (to fix bugs) despite selling tons of licenses, how should the GIMP developers stem such an challanging feature?

outsidein··on Koenigsegg's Tiny Electric Motor Makes 335 HP and 443 LB-FT of Torque
This might apply for the use in a car having ICE. The electric motor itself could be optimized for efficiency, too. Efficiency adds range and indirectly reduces weight by smaller batteries. To rate the efficiency, we would need more data about motor efficiency vs. loads.

There is one positive environmental aspect of high power electric motors if they are capable of recuperation: you can recuperate a larger portion of the kinetic energy which would be wasted otherwise as heat using breaks. This counts even for heavy cars running lower speeds or not accelerating fast.
outsidein··on Ireland drops most Covid restrictions in wake of 'Omicron storm'
Really? In Germany, 79 cities > 100000 In Ireland, 3 (including Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland)

My comment was not meant to express any valuation or disvaluation of Ireland. It’s focus is about differences in age structures, population density, and vaccination strategy / execution, which makes it difficult to take Irelands approach as template for any other country.

Sure. It is disconnected from power 99.9% of the time. I only fire it up when required. For convenience I used a dedicated external network print server (you know, the printer is centronics only, and centronics long ago vanished for thevsake of usb on PCs). This print server consumed about 10-20 watt, much more than the printer which was actually one of the first with power saving / standby.

The print server has been replaced by an usb-2-centronics dongle recently to reduce energy consumption further.

An about 25 year old laser printer running almost flawlessly mechanically, with latest MacOS and Windows 10 OS, supporting PCL6 and PS is a thing. He is on the 3rd toner cartridge (at least 5 years old).

Only needed for rare cases of government mandated written docs like passenger locator forms.

Paper transport has been unreliable almost from day 1 based on dried up rolls and paper.

outsidein··on A pair of dice which never roll 7 (2004)
Or use 1 dice 1..6 and one dice 5..10

The result should be (excel syntax) mod(d1+d2;12)+1. You can adjust the lowest start number of dice 2 to control which result gets the highest probability

outsidein··on A pair of dice which never roll 7 (2004)
Why not simply take the dice result not literally, but as index to a mapping table there 2 or 12 is swapped with 7?

The HP Laserjet 2100 M (PCL and PostScript) is still running. Someone interested into the original PCL Language book which came with the printer?

Last year I finally ditched some spare i386 CPU and memory modules (sort of 1, 2, 4 MByte) after getting no response on eBay.

To add a fun story where Linux saved my live. Back in the 90‘ we had a Clipper / dBASE based DOS app used for capturing orders in a call center after TV commercials. In this case a prime TV show to generate donations. Full house with >100 agents busy. Then the Novell Netware server crashed, and was unable to mount the disks.

We managed to switch the users to an older server so they could continue to work. But it first seemed the HDD and files got corrupted and unrecoverable by disk tools from Netware. We thought of using a commercial recovery service, but this would cause delay and cost $$$$.

So I removed the disks from Netware, fired up a Linux PC, connected the HDD to the Adaptec SCSI (Luckily install prior for a CD drive). The file system was not mountable, but something like dd /dev/sdb1 |strings „JJJJMMDD“ discovered lots of salvage records.

This literally saved my ass and the company.

Remember the days back in 90‘ (Must have been 1994) when installing Slackware distribution on 486 DX from about 15 floppy disks to the internal HDD.

Had running Linux as web proxy until about 2001. Interesting to see that what was quite normal at that time has become to a topic of interest again.

outsidein··on Ireland drops most Covid restrictions in wake of 'Omicron storm'
Ireland has a younger population (age structure) compared to all other EU states. Vaccination priority was strictly based on age (oldest first). This decision is no suitable template for other countries with different age structure and vaccination status. Especially no template for US.

Next, consider Ireland is practically Dublin as capitol and single large city, and a more rural less dense populated rest of the country. Again, no template or match to other countries. It might work for Ireland.
